Androgenetic Alopecia is the medical term for male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness. It is basically hereditary baldness and is the most common of all, affecting tens of millions. Most believe it has to do with excessive androgens or male hormones in our bodies. This disorder normally takes place when one reaches adulthood. The process is gradual for the most part and does not stabilize until someone is well into their 50s for men and at a much later age for women. Be careful not to confuse androgenetic alopecia with telogen effluvium. In Telogen effluvium, the hair loss is sudden and temporary. In androgenetic alopecia, the hair loss is gradual and permanent.
