Chronic Stress, Adrenal Exhaustion and Hair Loss (Support Forum & Misc Topics) |
Hi there:
After three years of having my hair thin out, I found a naturopathic physician who diagnosed the cause of my hair loss as a result of adrenal exhaustion, a chronic stress condition and also a sensitivity to mold (I live in Oregon where we have a lot of mold!).
My doctor is following up with me Thursday to discuss a treatment plan but I am curious how one might conquer the chronic stress condition ? Someone told me that an antidepressant can help with stress but really, I am so nervous to go on something like this! And I have never heard of adrenal glands until I talked to him. Has anyone else had problems with their adrenals being overworked and how do you treat this??
Thanks so much--- Sharon

I live in Oregon too. I am not losing hair to mold. It sounds wierd to talk about hairloss over mold. Are you sure about this?

I have adrenal fatigue and your low cortisol levels are contributing to your stress levels. Treating the AF will help you calm down some. Stay away from AD's as you will only complicate your situation. I am on hydrocortisone for my adrenals and it is helping greatly, hair is somewhat better but I am hypo as well and still in the process of getting my meds right for both hypo and AF. AF and hypo usually go hand in hand. Have you had the proper thyroid testing done? You need tsh, Free T3, Free T4 and antibodies test.
A great site to learn about thyroid and adrenals is www.stopthethyroidmadness.com.

Deb and I seem to have similar situations. I agree, stay off anti-depressants if possible. Adding another synthetic drug into the mix can make things worse. All medications, antidepressants included, have side effects.

Thanks to both you and Amy606 for your replies. How do you take hydrocortisone? Is that a pill or injection of some sort? And what kind of doctor prescribed that for you. I am really interested in learning more!
I have had my thyroid tested but don't think we did the Free T3 or T4. I go back next week and will ask him to definitely do that.
Thanks for the great link! I will check that out! Sharon

My HC is in pill form and I take it dosed out four times a day, four hours apart. I was originally diagnosed through a functional medicine clinic but they kept me undermedicated for 18 months so had to give up on docs and have had to self-medicate. It's much much better to use a doc if at all possible but I had already lost three years of my life thanks to ignorant doctors so had no choice.
Most mainstream docs do not recognize that adrenal fatigue exists. They believe in Addisons only. You will have better luck with a DO or a doc that runs a wellness type clinic.
Without a doubt, have your Free's tested because if you have never then you have never been properly tested for thyroid function. You also want Anti-Tpo and TgAb to rule out Hashimotos. When you get them I stongly suggest that you post the results with ranges on the website I gave you on either the "General Thyroid" or "Adrenal/Thyroid" forum and let one of the mods take a look at them.
Good luck
