Avodart results - good, bad or none? (Propecia, Finasteride for Women)

Hi, if you have been taking Avodart for at least a few months, please post your results here, no matter what they are.

I have been taking it for 5 months with no results. Don't know if I should keep it up? add something else? or what?

Most say you must stay on an anti-androgen for one year to gauge results. For some it kicks in earlier, and later for others. From what I've read and heard, a doctor will want you to stay on for a year before trying something else. Hang in there... give it a few more months...

definitely don't stop at five months that is WAY to soon. Most HL docs will say it takes atleast a year for MOST people to even see results and 2 years for optimal results.

Sara is right the people who see results that soon are few and far between. Most of the people who have success with anti-androgen therapy stick it out through the sheds and give it atleast a year to work.

I know it takes a lot of patience and it is SO hard, but think about it this way...hair growth occurs in cycles, it is a slow process, and you are trying to undo the damage the DHt has reaked on your follciles. It's gonna take time....At five months your hair has maybe had one cycle???

so hang in there...I bet if you do you will be happy in the end? Are you using any topicals...like rogaine...maybe it would help speed up your regrowth?

Hope tha helps...best of luck!

Both of you have regained your part - that is awesome. Perhaps some parts of the scalp respond quicker than other parts. Maybe it's just a physiological thing... I think if it's shown success in certain parts of the scalp, other successes will follow. Keep at it ladies, don't give up if you've already seen improvements prior to a year's use.

Avodart results - good, bad or none?

Hi v,

I'm going to start on Avodart - or rather the generic which is Dutas as soon as it arrives. I just started Rogaine for women (like you suggested below). However, if I do both at once 1) don't I also have to continue both into infinity and 2) how would I know which worked? THANK YOU!

If they work, then yes, you do have continue the meds or you hair loss will resume. It sucks, but it's a fact.

Honestly, I guess you won't know which one worked, but most docs will say they work TOGETHER producing a synergistic affect. The advodart will help prevent further lose by blocking that nasty DHT from your follciles, and the maybe even encourage some regrowth. But the Minox is the big growth stimulator, so your getting help from both.

Just hang in there!! It takes time. But do keep us posted. There aren't too many gals on advodart on the forums, so we like to hear from the ones who are!!

Avodart results - good, bad or none?

I've been on Avodart 0.5/day for almost a year. I had great results with a dramatic decrease in shedding, lots of little new hairs, and a visible thickening by 6 months. After a month or two of that, I decided to see if I could get by on taking it only 6 out of 7 days and now, after about 2 months of that (it stays in the body a long time), the shed is picking up again. Either I am very senstive to the dosage, or something else is going on. But, all in all, I give it a big thumbs up.

I was taking Proscar before that, which I did not respond to favorably after a year's use.

I do have a question: Is anyone experiencing that deep scalp burn/ache/ tightness particularly at the very front/center (at the forehead line and about an inch back) of the head? It seems I get that a few weeks before a shed is going to start. It's very painful, plus I know what is coming so it's is very emotionally distressing, too.

Also, one derm I saw refused to prescibe it for a woman, even post-meno. He felt it was too risky in the breast cancer department. Anybody hear about that?

MAW, thanks so much for your feedback! Not many women on Avodart.

First, I had not read of the link between Avodart and breast cancer, but I don't doubt it exists, because anything that lowers male hormones has the potential to raise E. However, I think Avodart actually RAISES T, because the T that was supposed to convert to DHT stays T (since DHT is mostly blocked). I don't know what happens to E or other breast cancer-linked hormones in this context. Hope this makes sense. I'm just guessing, here...

Can you tell me a little about your history, such as age, how your HL started, whether you have PCOS or other androgen problems especially oily skin/scalp and cystic acne?

So the fact you responded so well to Avodart, but not Propecia, suggests that either 5AR-1 was your problem more than 5AR-2, or that blocking both types of 5AR is better than blocking just one. I'm excited Avodart is working for you because I susect 5AR-1 is more my problem too, because I'm extremely oily and suffer from cystic acne (but no hirsutism until I started Rogaine). Avodart is my next step if 6 months on Rogaine shows no results.

I assume since you are taking Avodart, you are 100% sure you have AGA? How far along in your HL were you when Avodart turned it around? And did you experience any hyperandrogenic effect, such as increased oil on skin/scalp, increased acne, or increased facial hair? Any side effects?

Is Avodart your only "hair drug?" Are you taking any other drugs such as BCPs or spironolactone, or using Rogaine foam?

I really want to try Avodart, but can't find a derm or endo to rx it for me. Can you share you wrote your script?

Thanks much and sorry for all the Qs! You just don't often hear of women who are able to get their hands on Avodart much less have success w/ it.

Hello eb,

I thought I'd stick my .2 cents in. . . I started taking generic Avodart (Dutas) about a month ago...so far nothing new that I can tell but my hairdresser thought my hair felt a bit thicker (then again, she might have been humoring me - lol). I don't truly expect anything yet.

I did not get a dr. to prescribe for me. I just bought the generic Dutas online and take 1 per day at night. I take 1 saw palmetto w/zinc and b6 in the morning. I also use Nizoral shampoo, both the 2% version (bought online) and the 1% version (bought at Walmart). I'm also using some demodex (those little bugs) shampoo. As to the demodex, I realize it's iffy these could be the problem - but I figure what the heck - I'll try it all - surely something will help!

I read in a men's forum that sometimes they take Avodart 3 days a week or so, that might work better for you.
