Meds from Dr. Redmond (Accutane or Medications Induced Hair Loss)

I went to see Dr. Redmond on Friday. He was thorough and understanding. He wants me to start Propecia 1/2 perday and spiro 100-200mg per day,for testasterone blocking He also wants me to start the pill, for estrogen. and to keep my periods regular on spiro. I am not starting the pill right now. I am hesitant to start the pill for a few reasons.
1. I do not do well on the pill!! Mood swings, weight gain
2. I have a benign breast lump and there are breast cancer risks.! We will see what my breast specialist says.
3. I smoke about 2 cigarettes a week!!! You cannot be on the pill and smoke.

Started the spiro yesterday,100mg I peed every 15 minutes!!! Do you get used to that, does that get better??? I am starting the propecia today.

Thanks to everyone who answered my blood test results post. You guys are so well informed.I cannot believe what i have learned from you guys. You were all WAY more helpful than the 3 doctors I saw prior to Dr. Redmond. I wish I had found this forum a year ago, when this all started. Perhaps I wouldn't feel so behind on treatment.
If you have ANY tips ,thoughts or words of wisdom, I would love to hear it.
Thanks,
Marjie

I think this is a good regimen. It's very aggressive and will tackle you hair loss from multiple fronts.

Please remember it may take up to a year to see results, and chances are, you will go through periods of higher shedding. It's just part of the treatment. But don't get scared it's normal, and don't get discouraged, you can beat this but you have to give those meds a long time to work.

I think you are very lucky. Many girls have to go through doc after doc to get on a a good regimen.Just hang on and you'll be fine.

What did dr. redmond say about your risks regarding the pill and the benign breast disease? He usually is very knowledgeable about the risks involved with hormones. I had a long talk with him regarding HRT bc naturally I have the same concerns.

You won't retain water now that you're on Spiro. My rings were once tight but haven't been since I started Spiro. Also, I noticed that I don't have to shave as often. It was a nice surprise.

»Thanks for the replies! Dr. redmond did not think the benign brest lump was a reason to avoid the pill. He seems VERY knowledgable . I am hesitant as i have NEVER done well on the pill. Also the smoking of 3 cigarettes a week is a risk factor. He is adamant about that!! He said I could wait and see if the t blocking works and get a mammogram,if that is clear and i never smoke again i could go on the pill. I have the prescription.
So I started the other meds.
Trish, my rings are looser after 2 days of spiro!!!! My ankles didn't swell despite 90 and humid ! Nice bonus.
I love humidity,it makes my hair full!!!!
