rising ferritin levels - anyone having trouble? (Anemia & Hair Loss)

I wonder why it's going so slowly for me? Anyone else have a slow rate of getting a ferritin level up?

I don't have any gastric bleeding that I know of and don't even get a period every month which would be likely reasons for blood loss.

Just as a matter of interest what blood type are you? I read the other day that people with low stomach acid can have problems absorbing iron and other vitamins. Type As are prone to this. I've started taking Betain to help with digestion.

I am O. I had a low iron saturation level. The a$$hat doctor didn't pay any attention to that....said it was normal even though the lab flagged it. WOnder if iron saturation has something to do with it? My levels go up very, very slowly.

For the first few months mine went up very slowly 19-31 March - July then in July - March the following year it was up to 90 and obviously rose more maybe as the body became accustomed to it? Take vit c with it

Mine took ten months to move from 25 up to 57. But I have ulcerative colitis so that would account for my slow increase. Also, remember that ferritin is the store of iron, not circulating iron, so praps your body needs the extra iron you are taking and thus not much is being stored as ferritin. Plus, only a small amount of the iron we eat is absorbed into the body, most of it is excreted.

How is your digestion? Is your stomach acid good enough. Read up on digestion. Minerals are absorbed in the upper part of the small intestine. I have read that if your stomach acid is too low, you will not absorb your minerals, including iron. Get your digestion checked, or take some digestive enzymes. I'm sure this will help.:-)

Only 10% of iron gets absorbed.

It takes 1-3 months for replenishing the iron stores

I'm using Ferrograd C ( 1x/day) and its taken me 6 months to get from 40 to 82. Still trying to hit 100. The good news is each blood test showed slow improvement. Hopefully, it will continue to get better.

Hi,
Iron is absorbed from duodenum which is the first part of small intestine.
An acidic environnment in the stomach is needed in the stomach which converts the ferrous iron in to ferric form which is the absorbable form. Vitamin C supplements help further in the absorption of iron.
