Help - what's going on? (Anemia & Hair Loss) |
There I was feeling all positive about things. My shedding's decreased and since last November my ferritin had been gradually rising from 11, to 18 and then in June 38. I had my fibroid zapped in June and had two periods since (not light, but then not as heavy as before). I've just had the results from a ferritin test last week and it was 30....down 8! I've not changed anything in my regime. What's going on? I'm panicking. Any ideas?

Geesh- I am so sorry. i don't know but even 38 is still way to low for hair.
Have you talked to your doctor about this?

I've got an appointment booked for Thursday so I'll have to see what she says. I just don't understand why it was on the way up and now is on the way down when I haven't changed my regime at all. I don't have any other obvious health problems. I can't afford to lose any more hair as the low ferritin went undiagnosed for a year and I lost a huge amount of hair. (Sigh)...it never rains it pours!

Aggie, don't feel bad, I'm in the same predicament - only worse! I had my fibroid surgically removed in June and have had on and off light bleeding since July. While my iron levels have increased to 93, my ferratin is lower and is now 13. I have been taking iron for 2 years and molasses and everything else you can think of to increase iron apparently to no avail. I am going to my dr this week and will keep you posted.

I'd appreciate that Lisa. I'll let you know what my doctor says too. I just don't understand why my ferritin was steadily rising and since having surgery in June it has gone down. The only thing that I can think of is that I bled continually for a couple of weeks after surgery (could ferritin levels drop simply due to this??) and then went straight into a proper period. They've been like clockwork since, which I know is lucky as many women's cycles become irregular after fibroid surgery or they go into early menopause. Anyway, I hope your doctor has some answers for you. Fingers crossed.

Possible nutrient absorption issue |
Hi girls...I remember when you guys had your fibroids removed and am still so hopeful for your recovery. Don't panic about a little fluctuatin in the ferritin, although I know you're needing to raise it. Have you both tested your thyroids? Hypothyroidism goes hand-in-hand with low ferritin (I mean to say, usually if your hypo then one's ferritin is low, but not vice-versa.) Also, keep in mind (perhaps you gals already know this) but certain things inhibit nutrient/iron absorption: calcium, tea, coffee, thyroid meds, fibrous foods, wheat. Also, if you gals are Type A blood type, we have less stomach acid and don't absorb nutrients as well. Some are given extra hydrochloric acid to help metabolize nutrients. Have you checked for leaky gut or candida? Good luck, gals....FG

I had no idea - I have mild hashis so that may be why I can't raise the ferritin easily.

Possible nutrient absorption issue |
Fashiongal - you have been so helpful and I learn so much from your posts. Prior to reading your message, I was just researching the connection between low ferritin and thyroid. My internist, who is an "integrated medical specialist" has told me repeatedly that my thyroid levels are "normal" although I have repeatedly tested high for anti-thyroid antibodies due to a small growth - its actually a small goiter. I had Hashimotos in my 20's and took synthroid before having my kids but dr. says now that that is not an issue. I went to a endo who was utterly useless. Not entirely sure what my thyroid numbers signify, so obviously I have more research to do. I am at my wits' ends with the ferritin issue and its effect on my h/l. My hormones are finally all stable (am on bioidentical estrogen/estradiol and compounded progesterone) according to my doctor. I have an appointment with him on Thurs and intend to ask him about the thyroid connection as well as adrenal component as factors in my hair issues. I also have tested low for DHEA, but he does not want to supplement because he said DHEA creates more testosterone, which he has been trying to suppress with spiro (50mg nightly) and proscar (1/2 tablet nightly).
Thank you again for all of your information - do you know if Deb is still on the boards? I remember she would analyze thyroid labs and it would be helpful to get her input.

One other thing - what is leaky gut? No, I haven't checked for that or candida, but I will ask on Thurs. Are there any signs of candida that I may have missed aside from the obvious (to me) yeast infections, which I don't have?

Hi FG. My thyroid function tests came back as normal (so I'm told!), ie. Free T4 15.22, TSH 1.49, Free T3 4.30. I don't drink tea or coffee, only hot water/lemon and eat very little wheat. I also try to follow the 'candida diet', ie. no mushrooms, pickles, blue cheeses etc. In fact because of everything I'm trying to manage my diet is healthy but quite restricted, eg. last night it was omlette filled with cottage cheese and a side of mixed pulses, plus a soya dessert and peach....well, I enjoyed it! After my stay in hospital for the fibroid, I discovered I am Type A+ blood so have recently started supplementing with hydrochloric acid as I know about the low stomach acid connection. I did also wonder about leaky gut because after some research I discovered that psoriasis can be a sign of this and my flare ups are deffo linked to certain foods. I also find it extremely difficult to lose weight even though I watch what I eat and exercise. Anyway, I still can't understand why my ferritin was on the way up and now it's going down (when I haven't changed my routine). Can iron be taken via injection rather than orally? Maybe I should discuss this option with my GP.

By the way, does anyone know if iron absorption (as well as B12) can be affected by intrinsic factor deficiency (antibodies to parietal cells in the stomach)? Maybe there lies my problem.

Your tsh looks good. Sorry, I don't have my labs in front of me but I will check them if I can find them and see what I had re the T3 and T4. How do you take the hydrochloric acid, pill form? I find if I stop the iron it just drops like a stone. Injections have some risks and can be painful, I'd ask the GP about that. I'm thinking of seeing my GP too. I do know that iron from foods are better absorbed than supplements. Also, checkout the type of iron you use...there are differences and some have a much higher absorption rate. I found when I took molasses, I raised my ferritin. I don't know if it was the molasses though since I was trying different types of iron while I did that. I suspect the molasses was helpful in raising the level though.

Thanks for checking the thyroid results. What form of iron are you taking? I take the HA via pill form. It's something I started recently because I only found out a few months ago I was Type A blood. Hopefully it will help. My GP believes that I have an absorption issue due to the instrinsic/factor parietal cells issue and has referred me to a haematologist, so I will have to see what he/she suggests. The thing that annoyed me is that the great GP I am now seeing brought up all the ferritin test results I had had done since first visiting the surgery with hair loss in November 2005 (I discovered it was 35 then). From the data it was evident that my ferritin was dropping like a stone month after month and yet not one of the other doctors/nurses picked it up....how inefficient is that? It took until November 2006 to be picked up by my derm (then 11)....and he took his time! I wish I had received copies of all my results but it's not really the done thing in the UK. I will demand them in future though.

Hi LisaS!! Thank you for your appreciation; I learn so much from all of you as well, and it's actually a rather sad commentary that I've had to research so much on my own, no thanks to the medical profession ! I wonder how your Hashi's just went away on its own after having your babies? Lisa, the physician is correct, however, in not supplementing your DHEA because that can contribute to HL, but, if your DHEA is LOW, this could indicate adrenal fatigue, which is often linked to hypothyroidism!! (Sometimes one comes first and the other responds, and vice-versa.) It sounds like you could benefit from seeing a naturopath as well (a really good, established one; not a hocus-pocus hang-a-shingle and it's sometimes hard to distinguish which ND's are truly experienced.) The naturopaths really look into causal relationships. I did see a recent post from our Deb in the thread started recently by Margie entitled "This nightmare won't end", so I would address a new thread to Deb and enlist her help.
However, did you test your DHEA before starting the Spiro? If not, the adrenal connection may be hard to establish because Spiro is an antagonist for, I think, androstenedione, which is manufactured by your adrenals. I need to check research because DHEA is dehydroepiandrosterone, and I believe this is a metabolite from one of the hormones manufactured in the adrenals. In other words, Spiro obviously lowers the value so it will be hard to tell if you would have had low DHEA prior to Spiro, which would possibly indicate adrenal fatigue. I know it is so so hard when we both have these multiple factors contributing to our HL: perimenopause, hypothyroidism, and low ferritin! Ugh. But at least we're all working through this together and can pool our resources! Take care and please keep me posted on what your tests show! Blessings......FG

Hi Lisa...leaky gut is a weird syndrome that I honestly don't know that much about but my naturopath was afraid I may have it in which nutrients are not absorbed properly in the gastrointestinal system; I'll research and let you know what I discover! Candida is supposedly really prevalent and my girlfriend had a horrible case in which she was EXHAUSTED all the time and did have vaginal yeast infections that kept recurring. She had to go on a major cleansing fast proctored by her naturopath because you can't have any sugar during your cleanse as sugar feeds the yeast. But on the other hand, you can't wipe out on the beneficial flora in your intestines either, because they eat the "bad" flora like candida! So it's very tricky to eradicate and one shouldn't self-treat in that case. I don't know if there is a test to determine if one has a treatment-worthy case of candida versus just a normal amount of candida. I'll let you know what I find out! Take care...FG

Hi Aggie...it totally sounds like your nutritional intake is utterly healthy and sufficient for not only HL but for optimal health benefits in every way!! Iron can be taken via injection but I wonder why oral supplementation is not holding for you. I also find it unusual that you find it difficult to lose weight despite your healthy nutrition and exercise! I do as well. And, your thyroid numbers do look completely normal. Is there any way at all you could be insulin resistant? Have you had your sugars tested? Or, perhaps you just need to give your body a little time to adjust after having the fibroid removed. Sometimes it's frustrating because the more knowledge we gain, the more we realize we don't know ! Please keep me posted, Aggie, and I wish you the best...FG

Hi Rae....No, not hyaluronic acid which is actually what they use in Juvederm and Restylane (wrinkle fillers), but hydrochloric acid which is one of the gastric juices in the stomach used for digestion. People who have Type A blood, as Aggie and I do (we both are A+) have less of this acid and therefore sometimes have less absorption of nutrients and slower metabolisms because of this. » Hi Rae....No, not hyaluronic acid which is actually what they use in
» Juvederm and Restylane (wrinkle fillers), but hydrochloric acid which is
» one of the gastric juices in the stomach used for digestion. People who
» have Type A blood, as Aggie and I do (we both are A+) have less of this
» acid and therefore sometimes have less absorption of nutrients and slower
» metabolisms because of this. Take care....FG
Oh, do I now have an excuse as to why I find it difficult to lose weight!!

Hi FG. I've been tested for diabetes as it runs in the family, however, everything came back as normal. Would this indicate insulin resistance or is there another test I should have? Why do you think you find it difficult to lose weight....could blood type really play a part?

Hi again, Aggie...I would think the diabetes tests would also indicate insulin resistance, as IR is a precursor to Type II diabetes, but I'm not sure if there are other, more sensitive tests. I am actually REALLY frustrated at my weight gain, even though I really think I can attribute it to my treatment on Proscar. I was on Spiro AND Proscar for three months until all my derms ordered me off the Spiro because my system is WAY too sensitive to take all that anti-androgenic assault. I IMMEDIATELY went from 122 to 128-9 (although not heavy at 5'8", I am really small-boned and it's a lot extra for me and my clothes are all tight and my breasts went from a B to a C cup !) and I haven't been able to lose it even after going off the Spiro. AND I run 15-20 miles/week and kick-box and do yoga when I have time. Proscar also acts as an anti-androgen and I really think this is what's causing my weight to remain stubborn. Even on no meds, it takes me quite a while to lose weight as I am hypothyroidal and articles I've read as well as my naturopath have said that Type O's have the most stomach acid and therefore have quicker metabolisms and Type A's the least stomach acid and therefore slower metabolisms. I take Papaya enzymes sometimes after a meal to aid in the digestion. Plus, I just turned 43 and I think you are near my age, right? Everyone tells me that the older we get, especially in perimenopause (which I don't think I'm in quite yet but definitely approaching), that we become slightly estrogen-dominant in peri because the progesterone drops drastically before the estrogen, which promotes weight gain sometimes. I saw that for sure w/ my mom. It's not fabulous dealing with all this at the same time ; weight gain AND hair thinning! I honestly think your ferritin may still be down because of the fibroid surgery. I would think it would normalize, however, within three months after the surgery, right? Please keep me posted with what you find!! Take care....FG

Take comfort in the knowledge that I'm a 32FF cup!!!!! My Mum went to an H after the menopause so I have that to look forward too.
Take care too
