Yaz (Accutane or Medications Induced Hair Loss) |
I started Yaz in June 2007 and stopped in August 2007 (recently - 8/11) - What exactly is dread shed/dead shed that I have seen others write about? My husband is convinced that my extreme hair loss these past few weeks is either because of STARTING Yaz or stopping YAZ. wouldn't the hairs I am losing now have been triggered months ago - -if so that would meanstarting the Yaz was my problem. Either way - its too late - some serious shedding is happening (I have decided to take a leave from work) When does this dead/dread shed stop? I guess it would have to stop once all my hair is gone - which is literally a week or two away at this rate. Has anyone had that happen? Complete loss???

Update - I made a phone call to my local pharmacy (I have lived in the same town most of my life) - I asked them to look at past history. Their records show I was on Desogen from 1/1998 - 9/1998. That was the last time I used BCP before June 2007. 1998 was when I experienced the major intitial loss. I noticed (from Redmonds book) that he puts Yasmine (same as Yaz) in the same category as Desogen. Could it be that all this loss if related to these BVP - that maybe I am "vulenerable" to these drugs?
Its all very coincidental.

Could I be one of the few that BCP's cause hair loss? I am in such a terribe state. I can not get the shedding to stop! It just keeps falling out and I am at the point where going out in public is not easy. I wake up with a pit in my stomach when I realize I wasn't dreaming all this.

Desogen Yasmin and Yaz, are suppposed to be the BEST BCP's for your hair as they are very non-androgenic, and Yasmin and Yaz are even anti-androgentic.
There is some thought that starting and stopping BCP's can cause or initiate AGA if you are prone to loss,
As for this being a dread shed because of stopping yaz, no, I don't think so. For most it starts 2-4 months after starting or stopping a bcp.

I guess what I am curious about is the people that lose hair going ON BCP. That is a side effect of both drugs (Yaz and Desogen) Could I be the amongst the small % of people who simply can not tolerate BCP and get this side effect?

some people need more than just Yas or Desogen they may need a combination of drugs including propecia, androcure, and estrogen. It depends on your diagnosis and how sensitive your follicles are to DHT. You need to go to to a good doctor since this has been going on for 8 years.

Delilah...if its AGA then the 8yrs of this should not require a doctor...right...because that IS what AGA is - a progression of thinning...right?
I guess my question is could this massive shed be because of STARTING Yaz 2.5 months ago...since its too soon to be the dread shed from stopping Yaz 8/11. Ironically my other MASSIVE shed took place when I took Desogen back in 1998. I just wondering if I am in the percentage of women who CANNOT take BCP as it causes loss as opposed to helping.
Does that make sense? I just can't fathom why this particular shed would be so severe - to the point where my entire life has been affected (taking a leave from work, etc)

You can be helped with the right combination of drugs. I don't know for certain which ones would be best for you since I have no medical background. Your increased shedding can be from stopping or starting Yaz I really don't know the answer to that. We can only give you suggestions not definitive answers to what your treatment should be.

I understand. I am at such a loss that I am just ranting most times. Trying to put this puzzle together and trying to find out if TE from using BCP exists does the hair grow back and how long the dread shed occurs for. It think I could live if it would just STOP falling/shedding some. Handfuls of hair each day makes for a very depressed, lonely, hopeless person. I just can't help but wonder if the BCP are the culprit and not the cure. Yaz made me feel nuts...so it wouldn't be so hard to fathom that it also caused my hair loss.

Can someone w/AGA tell me if it would be considered normal to lose almost all of your hair in 1 months time? This shedding episode is so severe -- I can live with thin hair but I can't live being bald like this! I don't understand what could be happening - I am losing my hair like a person who has had chemotherapy. Does that sound typical of a person with AGA????
Thank you all

when I first started losing my hair I lost inmassive amounts..I swera one dayI lost over 600. I THOUGHT I was going to be bald as a baby's butt, but it didin't happen. It did eventually low down some, even before I started treatement.
AGA has periods wher eit can be more progressive than other times. For amny people it is a slow gradual process, for others, we lose much d\faster. And initially it can present with massive loss that eventually slows down.
That being said if really are losing almost all your hair in one month....then NO...that is not normal and should be brought to the attention of a VERY good HL doctor......losing all your hair in one month is most certainly definitely not the normal progression of AGA.
Are you sure you have only been shedding one month? Ususally by the time we notice it has been going on for a while.
Is there a chance it isn't quite as bad as you think? Like i said back when I wsa losing hundred and hundeds, I thought i would be bald too?
I don't know sweetie...why don't you make a list with all possible causes for your HL and include dates and blood work...put it all together, everything for the last year and let us look at it?

OK...I'll get it all together...maybe something will jump out. I had a bit more than the normal amounts of shedding for the past year...maybe 100 per day...but this LARGE amount has been going on for a little over a month (300+ per day) I kept warning everyone (family and docs) that this wasn't good because at the rate I was going I was sure to be bald soon. Sure enough here I am w/very little hair left. Now I'm concerned about the next few weeks - - if it continues still I will have no hair left on top and very little left at the fringe area. What scares me is I HAVE seen many woman like this (bald) so I know there is no reason it COULDN'T happen to me as well....right?
My husband is trying to convince me that it has to be the YAZ - since I started using it at the end of May and things went down hill drastically from that point. But, maybe they were going to do so anyway? Everyone claims Yaz is GOOD for hair. Could that just not be the case for me? All I know it that 2 months ago I was a functioning person and now I am totally depressed and feel completely hopeless. In all my years of shedding off and on I have never been to this point. I have never had to take a medical leave from a job that I have had for 15 years! This is life altering.

Here are my LAST labs (taken 7/19/07) while on YAZ:
DHEA Sulfate = 193 (range 40-325)
Total Testosterone = 38 (20-76) - did not test Test Free
Estrogen/Prog are moot because I was ON Yaz
Ferritin 28
T4, Free = 1.0 (.8 -1.8)
T4, Total = 12.7 (3.8 - 12.0) - slightly over range
T3, Uptake = 21.1 (22-37) slightly under range
TSH = 1.48 (.40 - 5.50)
Here are some taken 5/24 - PRE-YAZ:
TSH = .85
Ferritin 31
T4, Total = 8.3
And here are some from one year ago - taken 9/12/06 (cycle day 12) - pre-YAZ
TSH = 1.27
Prolactin 7.5 (3.0 - 30)
DHEA Sulfate - 202
Androtenedione = 119 (within range)
Testosterone Total = 23
Testosterone % Free = .80
Testosterone, free = 1.8
LH = 5.6
FSH = 3.0
Ferritin 12
Strange that my testosterone is lower whe OFF Yaz than ON Yaz?

Maybe Yas alone wasn't the solution to your problem you may need meds like additional spiro or propecia. You need to get to a good HL doc ASAP.

Delilah,
I understand. But the only reason I haven't started such drugs is because I am thinking Yaz WAS my problem. Some women HAVE hairloss because of BCP and others are helped with hair loss because of them. What if I am amongst the few who can not take them....period (even Redmond claims there are woman like this)
Like I mentioned in some past posts - I had my first intial BIG shed some years ago when I attempted to take Desogen. Had I not taken that pill maybe I wouldn't be on this site today. I know its a big maybe---but it still exists. Can yu see why trying another BCP like Yasmine...even along with spiro, etc wouldn't be so easy for me? I'm worried it is the REASON for my problem and not the solution....
Thanks for listening to me...I know this is rough for everyone not just me.

I'm not qualified to say if starting the BCP or stopping the BCP caused the problem. Everyone is different and although some people may have been helped by Yaz you could be the opposite that's why you need to get answers. If you're planning to keep your appt with Dr. Redmond I would take the time to write down all of your HL and medical history before you get there. Don't leave anything out bc sometimes you'll get there and forget important things.

You ferritin level is low. Maybe that is contributing to your sudden shed. Has your doctor addressed the low ferritin at all?
Do you have Yahoo Instant Messenger? I have tons of information I want to share with you. I've been reading a lot of information on how diet, and more specifically about absorption of vitamins and minerals can affect hair growth. Your ferritin levels are low so obviously you are not absorbing iron and your iron stores are low. That, in itself will cause hair shedding.
In any case, if you're interested in talking, my Yahoo IM is fromrox@yahoo.com or you can email me at fromrox@comcast.net.
Btw, I've read this here numerous times but your ferritin levels have to be between 70 to 100 for regrowth to occur.

V-
The only thing I have taken in the last 10 years has been vitamins and BCP. I took Desogen from 1/1998 - 9/1998. I might have taken them for a few months prior to 1/1998 - but my pharmacy only had records going back that far. Then I took YAZ from the end of May 2007 until 8/11/2007 (2.5 packs - total)
The only reason I took the YAZ was because I was attempting to bring my ferritin up - it had kind of plateued at 33 after 6 months of diet change and supplements. I was told that my lengthy and heavy periods (5-7 days) were the reason why I couldn't get that level up. My doc thought YAZ would at least decrease my flow and at the same time help raise my ferritin because I wouldn't be losing so much blood every 28 days. I "knew" taking the YAZ was a mistake and I was right. Soon after taking it my mood changed drastically. I hated it the first month. Was not myself AT ALL. Cried a lot, etc - which before my hair loss I was not prone to do. But I was told that the mood change would subside. I either started to lose more hair each day on YAZ OR my shedding stayed the same and just the thinning became more evident because of it - I'm not sure. But, I knew that I had to stop the YAZ because I felt that if it made me feel that bad it had to be an issue for my hair. Around mid-July I decided to the YAZ...but my doctor told me to stick it out until I finished a pack. It just so happened that I was due to start a new pack on the day we arrived on our summer vacation. I was afraid to stop then because I wasn't at home and I was afraid of what might happen (get sick, bleed heavy) so I stuck it out the week. As soon as we came home from vacation I stopped - 8/11. The shedding got worse and hasn't stopped. In just a matter of weeks I have lost SO MUCH hair - to the point where I quite literally am on the brink of a nervous breakdown.
I am so terrified that this will not stop and that when/if it does that I will not be able to re-grow my hair. If AGA is my fate then so be it - I would have only hoped it would have progressed slowly. Its hard to see all of you hair gone in just a matter of a few weeks time.
Thanks for listening (AGAIN!)

I listed my stats in the next post...but forgot to mention that I had a huge bought of hairloss back around 1998 and its hard to remember if it was before or after taking the Desogen. After that my hair came back (never to how it was before) but enough where I could get by without thinking of it non-stop. No one knew but me - life went on. I have lots of pictures of me doing things that prove hair was not my issue (swimming, etc) But, at times I would shed more - but I was always growing. This big, massive shed is like the first - only this time I didn't have enough hair to begin with I guess.

I know everyone says Yasmin/Yaz are great for bcp for hair loss but I still don't think it agreed with me. Before Yasmin I had 2 children, 1 surgery, lots of stress and was on Orthonovum7/7/7, Othrotricycen, Tri-sprintec, and ovcom35.Never had hair loss. I have been diagnosed with AGA, but no matter what I think Yasmin pushed me quicker, and I'm sure it gave me a TE from stopping at the very least.I have been off yasmin for 9 months now.My shed is normal for 1/2 my cycle, and greater during Pms, and period time. I have a little regrowth.(but still bald areas on crown, front hairline)
If it was the Yaz I would look for a slower shed in a few months. Try to research regrowth after Yasmin in these boards. I remember seeing some great posts but for some reason am having a hard time accessing them now.

If your hair loss started after you where taking YAz then who knows, maybe it did cause this shed. Sometime swhen you start a BCP, you can shed becauswe your body has to adjust to higher levels of estrogen. This usually subsides after you have been on it for a while. Obviously though you are prone to hair loss and are very sensitive to synthetic hormones.
I do know going on and off is BAD for your hair and your hormones. You may just be one of those few people who don't do well on a BCP. BCP's can trigger AGA because of the fluctuaions in hormones. I strongly feel that this was the cause for me....I went on and off alesse (on of the WORST BCP's) several times and then several months later this mess started and hasn't stopped.
That being said didn't you have a biopsy that showed AGA? I get confused with so many people on here .
Low ferritin CAN mimic AGA, but like I said before it should correct itself once you get it up to the appropriate levels. have you tried blackstrap molasses?
Honestly I would get a a good HL doc. Could be the BCP's, perhaps the ferritin, or the beginning of AGA. Just remember though, if it is true TE, then it should start to subside within six months of starting......TE is a short lived reversible condition and the follciles are not damaged.
