Safe Level of iron supplements?? (Anemia & Hair Loss)

Hello -
My ferratin levels were recently tested, and are low - about 30. I started taking a multi vitamin with the normal 18mg of iron, but was advised to also supplement with ferrous sulfate tablets - 325 mg 2/x a day.
I'm worried about possibly building up toxic levels of iron in my body, which is bad for my liver/kidneys.
Can anyone advise what is safe to take, for an indefinate period of time? My doctors can't seem to tell me.

ť Hi Jill:

You may want to take the supplements in smaller amount (I take 28mg of iron twice a day) and take it more frequently.

I have read that up to 60mg of elemental iron is "safe". However, I suffer major constipation if I take a single dose of high iron.

My ferritin was 36 and I had been on twice a day iron with 500 mg of L-lysine to help absorption and so far no issue. My iron has B-12 and C built in (again to help with absorption).

Let me know if you see any improvements after a month. I seemed to see less shedding after one month on iron (but it's still far from NORMAL count).

Thanks Julie - I have noticed a slight decrease in shedding after less than a week, but also started a mega "Hair Vitamin" daily dose at the same time, so not sure what to attribute that to. Yes, still far from "normal" shed. I will post again after a month's time. Thanks again for responding!
