hair loss, please help! (Scalp Inflammation, Irritations & Dermatitis)
|
In the last 4-5 months I experiences abnormal hair loss/thinning that continues up to date. The hairs became brittle and easily come off the scalp together with the bulbs. Lately I also feel constant irritation and itchiness of the scalp even though I cannot see any redness. Plus, sometimes the hair roots are really painful. I feel that my hair is now half its previous volume. It looks lifeless and there is a bunch of hairs every time I brush or just run my hand through it. Additionally, last year was really stressful for me.I have experienced some seasonal hair loss in the last 4 years but it was average and nothing abnormal like now.
I haven't seen a doctor yet but I am looking for a dermatologist. Any recommendations for a good one in NYC? Most of the info that I found online on hair loss sounds to me like a rip off and/or advertising. And also, what are the tests that I definitely should do - I read a lot about hair analysis, scalp biopsy, hormonal tests, etc. I am really confused and not sure where to start from. And the speed with which my hair disappears is really scary.
Please help. I need your help and I will appreciate all opinions and advices. Thank you.

Just from my experience the past three months I would go straight to and endocrinologist rather than waste precious time with dermotologists and gynecologists. Ive you are having any trouble with you period which might cause hair loss, an endo can help there too.

» Would you go to long island?
Sure, I can go to Long Island. I just want to go the right doctor and not some hair transplant clinic that wants to make a fortune of me. What kind of specialist is that? Can you provide me with some info? If you prefer you can also contact me at my e-mail: chris_kourteva@yahoo.com

Mine did:
Comprehensive Metabolic Panel
DHEA
Prolactin
TSH-3rd generation
T-4, free
Estradiol
LH
FSH
Progesterone
Testosterone, free and total
Creatine, 24 hour urine test
Cortisol, free
Iron level
I'm sure there may be others and hopefully someone else can add to this if needed.
Good Luck. I know how hard all of this is. Some days I dont think I can take another day of it. Dont remember where you said you were from but suppposedly there is a good hair loss doctor in New York. A Dr. Redmond. I have not been to him but have heard many do go there. Expensive consult but the hair issue is worth it if he can help you.

You also need to have ferritin, not just iron, the two are different.

Try Ted Daly on Long Island. I have read good things about him. He is a derm I believe but he specializes in hair loss so he might be a good starting point.
Endos sometimes do NOT treat hormone issues that require estrogen and progesterone. They will often refer you to a gyn because there are risks associated with treatment they need the gyn to monitor. You may want to see both types of doctors. If it's hormonal and not thyroid you they will probably need you to get a gyn physical and mammogram if you are going to start HRT, BHRT or BCPs.

I have managed to stop my dramatic and quite scarey 18 month hair loss. The dermatologist did a scalp biopsy and endless tests and came up with nothing. On advice of an irridologist, I went to an integrative doctor (medical and natural)who instantly (and subsequently proved with a test) linked my problem to a candida overgrowth in my intestines. He gave me tablets (available from health food stores) to aid my digestion and within a few weeks my hair ceased to fall out. After 3 months, I stopped taking tablets and the hair started to fall out 3 months later. I have since gone back on them and within 3 weeks my hair stopped falling out again. My overall wellbeing has improved dramatically.
Good luck with your search for help.

I am in the NYC area as well. I saw Dr. Bergman (endocrinologist) who sent me for every blood/urine test possible. Then, he referred me to Dr. Reed in NYC (dermatologist). I liked both a lot. Reed doesn't take insurance but specializes in hair loss. Although I am still figuring this out, I would reccomend both.
Best of luck!

JS,
Did the tablets to treat candida contain acidophilus and/or probiotics?
These are known to treat candida overgrowth.
You can eat these nutirents in food products ....all women should.

I feel your pain. This is my story and I hope this can end your nightmare.
My hair was my pride and joy, however, although it was quite thick, long and shiny I felt it was a bit flat, so I decided to get a perm. Just after getting the perm my scalp became dry and itchy with a burning sensation. The following months saw a significant amount of hairloss with my hair coming out at the slightest pull with the roots as well(around 50%)and I was inconsolable. After trips to various hair experts, my doctor and a trichologist (who were unable to really help me), I discovered, through my own research, the solution to my problem which gave me back my life.
3 years on my hair has grown back in and is down to past my shoulders.I am now dedicating a lot of my time to sharing my new found solution to those who are experiencing the same problem and suffering unecessarily. Firstly I would reconsider the shampoo you are using if it is not 100% organic. Almost every non organic shampoo contains harsh chemicals such as sodium laureth sulphate which contribute to hairloss and severe scalp irritation. There is quite a bit of information in the remedy that i found, and encompasses all different scalp conditions. go to the http://yves2008.wadsy.hop.clickbank.net/
P.s It is all organic, herbal remedies but still let your doctor know what you are doing. All the best.
