Hi,
I am really feeling alone with this conditions so I am so glad I found this board. I started to notice my hair was thining about a year ago. Now you can see right through it. This has caused a depression like no other I have ever experienced. I seem to live in an area where it seems like everyone has a beautiful head of hair. I feel like it affects my relationships especially with other mothers at my son's two different schools. It's like I'm not the pretty perky mother with cool jeans, pointy toed shoes & a great head of hair so they don't want or just don't encourage their kids to be friends with mine. I started taking the pill a couple of months ago along with Eluhair and 1000 mg of B12 vitamins. Some days I think the shedding has slowed and others it seems like there just can't be any more hair to lose. I used to love entertaining and going out and now I just want to stay home. My husband says he love me no matter what but there's just something about feeling good about yourself and the way you look. Does anyone else feel this way and are there any suggestions on how to deal with this. Thanks

I'm not a mom, and neither in relationship. My hair started thinning at the age of 26 (im 30 now). I have become a social recluse form a reasonably sociable person who liked to explore london town and meet new people. Now i stay within my postal code, and havent seen some friends for almost a year because i am so self concious about my hair loss.
I totally empathise with you, as do many others on here. I had super thick hair (im south asian so we tend to have thick black hair) and was envied for it throughout my teens and twenties up until a few years ago.
Only other women who have really lost a lot of hair can understand this. I'm sick of being told im vain by those who havent lost any!

I totally know how you feel. I used to be one of those Moms with the jeans, cool jewelry, pointy toed shoes and great bonde hair. I volunteered at the school, visited my kids at lunch, walked to school to pick them up, entertained at my house. Now, nothing. I don't volunteer, I don't entertain, and hide in my car when I pick up my kids. However, I still dress "cool" because it's all I've got. I'm slender so at least I have a good body. I just want people to think that maybe I'm just having a bad hair day when they see me.

Hi there-
I am so sorry you are going through this. I know exactly how you feel. I used to be the mom who volunteered at every function and was always visisble in the school, now it has become more difficult.
First what is your diagnosis? Do you have AGA/ If you do there are some very worth while treatment options out there to help you slow the loss and regrow some hair. However., they take patience and dedication and you have to wait and wait to see results.
There are various anti-androgen avaiakble to address the issue internally. Spiro, Flutamide, and there are a different class such as Finasteride and avodart. All of these (and sometimes a combonation) have helped many women combat this issue.
The Roagine foam 5% is also a very good option. It has a much higher success rate than the 2% or 5% liquid and can give very postive results. I have been on for 4 months and my shed has slowed some, and I am seeing some signs of regrowth. Like all hair loss treatments you have to give it atleast a year to see a cosmetic difference.
Also there are various concelers to help such as Toppik, Dermamatch. Kerasome, and Fullmore.
If you haven't had blood work, there are tons of tests you can have run, as there can be numderous causes of hair loss.
again, I am sorry your going throuh this but glad you are here. please let me know if I can help you in anyway!

Welcome Momof3boys, V gave you good advice. The boards are great but you have to be proactive in your treatment. First you make the decision if treatment with medication is the route you want to take and if it is find a doctor who's qualified to treat you effectively. That IMO is the hardest thing to find, every dermatologist will say that he's an expert in HL, but it's usually not true. V is right there is hope if you get treatment and from everything I've read the earlier you start the better. First you need to find the cause via blood work (which will no doubt be normal) to rule out any underlying problems and procede from there. Don't let HL rob you of some of the most wonderful years of your life..your kids will only be little for a short time.

I'm really sorry to hear more and more women suffer from hair loss.
What to tell you? It's now your own battle and you have to be brave and don't give up.
Regarding relationships, it's not that bad as you see it. You'll find out who are your true friends (not because they like how you look like but because they like you).
Wish you luck

Yap, delilah is right. fighting hairloss doesn'thave be a hopeles cause. You may not every get back all you had, but you can stop/slow the progression and hopefully regrow enough to feel comfortable with the RIGHT treatments.
She's also right in that you have to be proactive...you sometimes have to demand teratment and be aggressive, and also, as she said, the sooner you start treating this mess, the better off you'll be!

We can all understand how you feel. I started losing my hair at 20. It has done such a number on my self esteem. A problem is, many of the meds mentioned here for women are not recommended for women of childbearing age. So, anyone thinking of another baby, or a first baby, should be really careful before deciding to use these drugs.

I feel your pain. Its good to know there are people here just like yourself that understand exactly what those feelings are that you are having. It seems like no one else around understands you and actually, they dont. Unless you have had to endure this you have no idea how it makes you feel. Ive always felt that if every person in the world had to deal with this for just one month in their lives, they would never make light of how painful this can be.
You will get lots of hints on how to try to find a solution for your problem on here. I have been seaching for some solution for over 100 days now and I hope Im on the right path. Unfortunately only time will tell and waiting on that is so stressful. Im trying to be more patient (as the doctor said I must- these doctors just kill me with full heads of hair) but its still hard not knowing if your hair will really stop falling out. Hang in there and just try to learn as much as you can about your symptoms and hopefully find a good doctor that is willing to help treat your type of hair loss.

First I would like to say thank you to everyone who replied so quickly to my post. Someone asked about info so I'll tell you that I'm 44, I have two children and I've always had fine hair but alot of it (think Susan Lucci). Now in the past 6 - 9 months my hair has thinned out dramatically all over - no real bald spots or large part just overall thinning. I've consulted a dermatologist who ran blood work for thyroid & hormones and said everything was normal except I was boderline low B12 but not out of normal range. I am considering an endo visit so any advice about what to expect from that would be greatly appreciated. What's just as if not more troubling to me is the texture change. Not only has my hair thinned out but it's dull & lifeless and kind of kinky curly in some areas and straight in others. My hair now looks more like Cameron Diaz's character in Being John Malkovich and I don't have a Cameron Diaz face (who does). I feel like this is too quick an onset to be age related and I'm not really ready to be old. That's what is so depressing about the whole thing. I'm not in bad shape and I try to dress well but your hair is part of the whole package and I feel helpless. Thanks again for letting me vent.

Thanks for your support. I think in a perfect world people would not judge other people by their appearance but unfortunately, we do not live in one. Sometimes when I'm with friends I notice them looking at my hair. Once in blue moon I'll have a great blow out done by my hair stylist and everyone will comment on how good my hair looks. I can NEVER do that at home. So instead of hearing a compliment I hear it as "your hair usually looks like crap but today it looks pretty good". It's not their fault really - just another thing I'll have to learn to deal with.

I can so relate to what you've been posting. My hair has thinned a lot over the last year. Also, a texture change. I have fine hair, too. I just had a lot more of it. I've noticed that my texture has gotten better recently. I've added Pumpkin Seed Oil and I'm not sure if that is what is doing it. I 've read it's an anti-androgen. I hate to say this..but I think it's age related. I'm not ready to accept that either..but I think hormones play the biggest part in this. Something is off internally with me. I've had low ferritin..if I were you I'd get that checked out. But going to an Endo is a great start. I'm seeing one in October. The two derms I have seen have been NO HELP whatsoever. So, I'm done with derms for hairloss issues.
I saw my therapist recently and she hadn't seen me in awhile. She told me my hair looks better. She said it looks much better than it did a year ago. So, I'm hoping that all of my effort has paid off in some respect. Just eat well, try to de-stress and get your hormones and bloodwork checked out. There are a lot of women on this forum who know so much about the hormone side to this. They've helped me out a lot.
Good luck and know that you've come to a safe place to vent about your hair. The ladies on here have been been so supportive. I couldn't imagine going through this without all of their encouragement and sage advice.
