Does spiro increase estrogen? Also, pregnancy... (Rogaine, Minoxidil) |
I have two questions:
1. Does spiro indirectly increase your estrogen levels? I am currently taking Yaz and have a prescription for 25 mg of spiro but am scared to start it because I am not sure it will work for me and I don't want to get a bad shed. But I was thinking if spiro decreases testosterone, would it also increase estrogen? I think that increased estrogen would help me and I don't want to get off yaz because it has helped my acne so much.
2. I had a baby 7 months ago. When I was pregnant, my hair stopped falling out and most all of it grew back. I had been losing hair for about 2 years previously but while pregnant my hair looked great. It started falling out again when my son was 2 months old. So, does this tell me anything about why my hair is falling out? Does this mean it is hormonal? Is there anything I can take that can mimic pregnancy hormone levels and maybe make my hair nice again? I know it is a long shot but I am desperate here. I am still scared to start rogaine but I really do need to try it.

yep, started the spiro 25mg last tuesday. That lasted for one day. 2 hrs into it, my hair started to shed all through out the day. That lasted for 2 days. Had a bad head ache that lasted for 4 days, teeth started hurting and laid around that whole day. But don't let me discourage you Everyone is different and reacts to meds differently. Just try it for one day and see if you can tolerate it. Me personally, I rather let my hair shed naturally and slower, then to have any help making it worse faster. That's just my oppinion.

I have never heard of spiro increasing estrogen, but I couldn't say for sure, you would have to ask your doctor. I wouldn't think that it would, though. perhppas if you need more Estrogen you could go on a pill with higher edstrogen content.
Yaz is actually a low dose E pill with .20 mcg...you could go to Yasmin with I "think .30mcg or .35mcg, and still have the anti-androgen benefits with higher estrogen.

Question: why does spiro, Rogaine, etc cause more hair loss? If it is able to cause TE why do we say only a major stressor can cause TE in the first place if something like spiro and Rogaine can also be a cause?

This is another reason I think it does have something with hormones. I'm planning to get complete blood work while pregnant (if I have good hair) so I can compare the values later.
It's little bit strange that so many women have full hair recovery while pregnant and dr's still cannot find what's causing it.

I agree 100%. That is what lead me to try natural progesterone (prescription strenght via a compounding pharmacy - not from health food store) I figured it couldn;t hurt and that is a hormone that goes through the roof while pregnant. I use on days 14-28 of my cycle.

Here is a very good reason wht you may have increased shedding with treatment.

I also recommend looking on the men's forum. The take many pictures throughout there journey and in many cases you can ACTUALLY see that it gets worse for some before it gets better.
As fo rogaine here are the reasons you shed---
1) Rogaine is telling your follciles to grow a new healthy hair and keep it in the anagen phase, so the hairs that were already in the telogen phase come out to make way for a newer healthier hair.
since rogaine is trying to grow a new healthy hair, the "unhealthy or miniaturized hairs" start to fall. This is because hair follicle cannot change size in the middle of growing a new hair. So that hair is shed, and the hair follcile is rearranged so to speak to produce a new healthier hair.
the thing you have to remember is that the hair follicle is an organ, and it is going to take a bit of time with treatment to become healthy again. You didn't lose all that hair overnight, so you have to give it some time to get better. On treatment you can go through sheds as the hair cycles through and becomes healthier.

Gina it's the estrogen that improves the hair in pregnancy not the progesterone. Too much progesterone isn't always good for the hair, especially the wrong kind.

I thought it was the estrogen too, which is why I have considered taking a birth control with higher estrogen levels. But, I have also been told that higher estrogen can make hair fall out too. Confusing!

But, progesterone helps balance estrogen and testosterone......that is why it is beneficial...moreso (I think) that taking the synthetic estrogen in bcps. For me bcps are the devil in disguise! BUT, they do work for a large portion of women, too!

Gina, that is NOT true. The biosynthesis of hormones is extremely complicated and I can't begin to understand all the pathways involved, but I do know that progesterone CAN be converted to testosterone by the adrenal glands, and can definitely cause hairloss in susceptible individuals. I know several women who's hair loss worsed by taking bio-identical progesterone. Yes, some synthetic progestins are androgenic and contribute to hair loss, but Yaz and Yasmin have the least androgenic activity of all of them. This is not to say that Yasmin can't cause hairloss in women - I know it has happened to many on this board, but just as many have had their hairloss lessen with bcps. It's a crapshoot.

Progesterone is a building block hormone as the article states. It balances hormones. The very last paragraph talks about how it inhibits DHT:

I will try to help with this one from my own experience. I don't have a definite answer, but I think the answer is not appreciably. It makes theoretical sense spiro would raise E, but when I got my day 3 labs done on 125mg spiro x 6 months, my T was way lower and my E was fairly normal. Maybe slightly higher than baseline (by 10 points), but I don't think 10 points is statistically significant.
However, I will tell you that spiro definitely does change the balance of 3 major hormones: T, E, P. I have regular periods and perfect labs when not taking spiro, but on spiro, my cycles are completely whacked while my T is way suppressed. If I take spiro during my period, I never stop bleeding, and I think it's a consequence of spiro's P-like effects. It may also do something to E, because during spiro periods I have the most scary horrible clotting (sorry TMI) suggesting hyperstimulation of the endometrial lining which is a classic symptom of E overload (or E dominance).
But this increase in E is not reflected on my labs. I'm not sure why.

Yes, yes, and maybe the BCP, respectively. However, the BCP is such a hit and miss. For most women, it is the straw that breaks the camel's back. But for some, it helps stabilize loss and maintain what's left (even regrow in rare cases). In the past, back in my no hair trouble days (boy do those feel like light years ago), I have jumped on and off about 10 different kinds of BCP, most highly androgenic, and my hair was no worse for wear. However, since the AGA process has started for me, I can't count on how I reacted before to predict how I'll react now or in the future. I'm not sure if the same reasoning applies for you, but it's something to think about. Everyone's different.
I'd try an antiandrogen and/or Rogaine foam before getting on the pill, if I were you. That may be all you need.

In the steroid hormone synthesis pathway, Progesterone CAN be converted to 17OH Progesterone (high levels of this steroid are seen in Adrenal Hyperplasia, (a hyperadrenal disorder which causes hairloss) then to androstenedione, a principal metabolite of testosterone (which in excess causes hairloss) and finally, testosterone. (which in excess causes hairloss). Just saying it can't hurt is very simplistic. Everything we ingest can have either benefit or possible detrimental side effects. Just because it's bio-identical doesn't mean it's harmless.

Yes bc progesterone keeps the uterus from getting too thick of extra tissue, but it doesn't help with HL. It only hurts if you're on the wrong kind.

The "wrong kind" is the kind in bcp and other HRT therapies using SYNTHETICS (progestins). That is the only wrong kind. Bio-identical (natural) is not the wrong kind and it can most definitley help with hair loss IF hairloss is due to an imbalance of the hormones. Progesterone is a balancer. If hair loss is not due to an imbalance then it probably won't help ---but it can't hurt either. If anything it is just a waste of money. Just like supplementing with any vitamin - - it might not help but it certainly can't hurt. The only thing that CAN hurt is the synthtic progesting used in bcps...because they "fake" your system and thus cause your own body to stop the production of the real stuff and that can be bad...and why the synthetics have so many side effects and the natural has none.

Prometrium is what I AM taking - on transdermally and not by capsule because I didn't want the pill to go via the liver. I'm very well informed about bio-identicals........and synthetics. Even Dr. Redmond (who everyone seems ro bow to) agrees on this point. May not help but will not hurt. The same is not true of synthetics progestins which have a completely different make-up.

It's not that everyone bows to him he's just more knowledgeable than most doctors about hair loss. Why would you be on prometrium if you're not on estrogen? Is there any point in upping your progesterone? Hair problems in a lot of women start when their estrogen dips not their progesterone.

Yes, everyone bows to him (in my opinion) - No one takes in to account that he has some odd practices (office is in a very high rent area, does not accept insurance, and gives out almost the exact same treatment for almost every women) These same RXs could be given by your derm or GP or gyne. I have been swayed by toomany of these doctors and just personally think this one is making his fortune in hair loss right alongside his drug rep.
I do not need estrogen - my estrogen is good. Progesterone is only in effect AFTER ovulation (I ovulate every month) BCP give you progestin ALL month and that is not natural but the reason they work to prevent pregnancy. If you look at a chart of hormone changes through your cycle there is NO progesterone from days 1-14. So, I use the progesterone cream on days 14-28 (or until my period starts) - it acts as a balancer and keeps other hromones in check. If other hormones are already in check then I am wasting my money....but absolutely not hurting a thing.
Here is the chart. My question to most is why take progestins bcp (unless you are trying to prevent pregnancy ONLY) on days 1-14??? It is not natural for the body can surely cause many side effects (just look at the insert for the loooooooong list).

Actually that's not true not everyone gets the same treatment but most women go there for HL problems so it's not out of ordinary that they would get similar medications. As for insurance my husband just had total hip surgery at hospital for special surgery and guess what the surgeon didn't take insurance for a $14,000 operation so $600 examination fee is not outrageous. He also gives you a form for you to get reimbursement from your insurance co. Secondly the second visit is $250. I don't know where you go to the doctor but I pay way more than that to have botox, restylane, IPL etc. I'm not telling you to go to Dr Redmond but I'm saying that I do feel he's one of the most knowledgeable doctors that I've consulted with about HL. He helped me so of course I'm grateful for that. I disagree about getting the diagnosis from other doctors bc I had gone to all of the ones you had mentioned with no help. I tried diet, vitamins, iron, nizoral and nothing helped.

I'm glad he helped you and others. I'm not setting out to bash any doctor or any treatment. I guess I became defensive when you questioned my knowledge of bio-identical progesterone vs. synthetic progestins....it is something I do know much about. I brought up Dr. Redmond because my beliefs regarding natural progesterone are similiar to his - - but my beliefs regarding progestins differs greatly. Some day I may eat my words - but to date I will not accept that each and every one of us with w/normal labs and hair loss do not have a compromised system (either endoctorine, digestive or immune) and without correcting that no amount of drugs are going to fix our sysmtoms. Peri/menopause is a different story all togehter - that seems cut and dry. Healthy women in their teens, 20's & 30's should not lose their hair. The key word being "healthy". I do not feel or look healthy and that is why I am searching for answers....answers that are not found in a bottle with a list of side effects a mile long.

I agree I feel that peri/menopause HL is totally different from AGA but also the same in that they are hormone related. I'm not in favor of synthetic hormones for HRT but not opposed to BCP's as a form of birth control. I guess I'm confused by the use of prometrium for HL and where it fist in a normal menstrual cycle. If you had problems during your pregnancy I could see taking more progesterone

A major function of progesterone is to maintian the hormone balance with estrogen. It helps regulate your cycle. In my case I have heavy and long periods. Prometrium can help with this...which can help with iron stores...which can help with hair loss. In additon it is said to be an effective DHT-inhibitor. Both of these things may not GROW hair -but could help stop it from falling out in buckets. We all agree that ALL hormones
work together, right? Well...since this is a building block hormone with virtually no side effects (if used during days 14-28) then how can it possibly do anything but good for hair, stress, PMS, etc?

Whats amazing to me here is that everywhere you look you will find a listing of side effects caused by synthetic progestins and that doesn't seem to scare people....but taking something completely natural does?
If Progesterone and Progestins are the Same:
Why do fertility doctors always use progesterone and not progestins?
Why do progestins cause birth defects, while progesterone is essential for a viable and healthy pregnancy?
Why don't synthetic progestins show up in blood and saliva tests for progesterone levels? In other words, why donesn't taking a progestin raise ptogesterone levels in the body?
Pregnant women are making 300 mg of progesterone daily in the las trimester. Why don't they have higher rates of breast cancer, as women do who use progestins?
Why doesn't natural progesterone cause the side effects listed for medroxyprogesterone acetate (Provera), the most commonly used synthetic progestin for HRT?

Yes but if you look at the WHI statistics there's no increased breast cancer rate with women taking estrogen alone (women who've had their uterus removed) but once you add progesterone the risk increases. So there seems to be a serious question as to what role progesterone takes in the risk.

Hmm...I thought that was the whole thing - that estrogen should have oppsing progesterone? MY best friends mother was of the lot who took estrogen alone and she developed breast cancer as a result. There is no doubt about it. It occurred just when the whole HRT thing blew up. Thank God she survived.

So, far...but I'm only on month 2. I'll be curious to see if it remains this way. Before my periods were 6-7 days...now they are 4-5. Time will tell I guess.

Interestingly enough I am reading about Diane-35 as well and Andeocur and each of these contain progesterone which acts as a anit-androgen.???
Androcur is an antiandrogenic hormone preparation. It inhibits the influence of androgens which are also produced - to a slight extent- in the female organism, and also exerts a progestational and antigonadotrophic effect.
