hair loss with low ferritin and Hashimoto's (Thyroid Conditions & Hair Loss) |
Does anyone know a good natural doctor in New York City who can help me with my her loss?
i have Hashimoto's, and low ferritin. i've been taking 70mg of iron daily for over a year and my hair loss is still massive. my doctor keeps me on 25mg of synthroid which does nothing! my ferritin level has gone up a bit but not enough
to prevent hair loss.
i really need to find a great doctor who knows what he/she is doing!!...
any advice?
thanks, moira

low ferritin could definitely be causing your hair loss.
also most people who are on thyroid replacement are not optimized until the are at around 100-150 mg of synthyroid. If you are hypo, the 25 mg' isn't enough and your body could still be experinceing hypo at such a low dose. Why does your doc not raise your levels?
also be careful because in some people synthyroid istself can cause hair loss.
Hope that helps!

thanks V. The reason I'm on such low dosage of synthroid is that my Doctor claims my TSH is just right with this amount, and does not recommend to increase the dose.
I'm very frustrated though, because my hair loss issue is not being addressed properly.

What is your TSH level? What most doctors consider normal is not always optimal. You would be surprised to learn how many people have thyroid problems for which they aren't treated. I was one of them for almost 5 yrs, despite the fact that I had a family history of thyroid problems, doctors still kept telling me I was fine. You should definitely check out the "stopthethyroidmadness.com" website. Unfortunately, they are no longer able to respond to questions, but if you look on the forums, you'll find plenty of helpful information. To say that this website saved my life might be a bit of an overstatement, but to say it saved my health would not.

One of the mods from STTM has set up a site at www.realthyroidhelp.com and she is great at answering your questions. Do check out STTM as well as there is a wealth of info to learn from it.

Hi-
I had the same issue and it turned out to be LOW COPPER. And by taking iron you continue to deplete your copper levels as the iron is antagonistic to the copper. And instead of iron anemia you could have copper anemia.
Get a trio of serum copper, zinc, ferritin on your next blood test to see.
Good luck!
My hair is full & long again after YEARS of taking iron to no avail and now taking a small amount of copper every 3-4 days along w/a multi-vitamin which contains BOTH copper & zinc as they balance each other.

Dear Ms. Libby,
I am not sure if you are the same one offering great advice from a couple of years ago signing as Ms. Lib. I just happen to read this forum after a long break as I noticed continued hair loss. Do you feel that LOW COPPER is the answer instead of iron which everyone writes is the cause of hair loss? How did you find this out? Trial and Error? Please let us know. I am dying to try to something else as the iron continues with my hair loss. Thanks!

Libby - thanks for pointing this out. SO many vitamins and minerals can have a reaction with another and create a deficit of something else we need to grow hair. It's a mess. I have a bunch of mineral supplements and I rotate them a bit to try to keep things balanced. I didn't realize the copper and zinc could be done by a simple blood test. I've tested B12 and ferritin. I'm going to ask for that when I do my labs again just to make sure I am not messing my copper up while on iron.

I am going to a doc in chicago. He order me an ION test. It is a complete blood work up. It tests for minerals amino acids antioxidants vitimins .It was alot of information. I am low in somethings including copper feritin and imino acids. I have been taking vitamins for two months with no results. He said it would take six months. I am hypo and hoshimotos. I have noticed in the last year that a normal dose of any type of thyroid meds makes me dizzi I am currently down to 1/4 of armour every other day because if I stop taking it altogether it makes my dizziness lessen but I crash after 3 days. They have tested me for inner ear, blood pressure is good other than that I am healthy, but I did do alittle better when I cut out wheat, my head aches completly stopped and dizziness lessoned today I am back on the wagon(WHEAT). lab work web site www.metametrix.com

Hi,
Just thought I'd jump in while you are waiting on Libby, have you ever had your adrenals tested? Trouble tolerating thyroid meds can be a sign of weak adrenals. Just something to consider.
