Finasteride,,,,,,,,please help (Accutane or Medications Induced Hair Loss)

hello all
Ive chosen to start proscar. Can I just whether any of you have had any results on this drug and if so on what dosage and how long after taking it did you start noticing positive changes, if any.
I know V has said that she read somewhere that women should have at least 2.5mg. I told my derm that, he said there is no research to show any difference between that and 1 mg. I have read somewhere that there is not difference between 2.5 and 5mg, but cant remember where.....any info would be great.

Finasteride,,,,,,,,please help

There is a study, and I will try to find it, that says that a dose of 2.5 mg along with yasmin produced some good results. I will find it and post it here for you.
My derm also said you need atleast 2.5mg for female hair loss, and that some women with other androgen related disorders take 5mg with no side effects. I also have read where other derms have told their pateints similiar information.

It is all about how much DHT you a blocking. 2.5 mg is going to more than 1 mg and 5 mg will block more than 2.5mg. even blocking a little more can help your hair.

I have read that proscar/finasteride is not as effective in menopausal women, who really need to focus on getting their hormones balanced correctly.

Good luck, I hope that helps and keep us up to date on your progress. If I were you, since you are just beginning a new treatment. I would try to take pictures once a month to measure your progress objectively.

Hi Salis,

I took Proscar for three to four years without results BUT I am postmenopausal. I started it before research showed that it didn't work as well for women my age. It is effective for many women. Give it time.

Finasteride,,,,,,,,please help

I am in perimenopause right now and have been losing hair for about 4 months. Still have periods but not regular since first time last December. Several doctors have diagnosed as hormonal. Most recent also said I might want to take finasteride 5 which might help in case there is any issue with DHT as well as help regain some of my hair. At this point I have a few hairs sticking up from part but not many. Cant seem to grow it since my hormones are out of balance. I have been on HRT for only 6 weeks. Only differece I've noticed is that my loss is leveled instead of 130 one day and 80 the next. Now its 120 everyday:o)) Not much difference. I dont think this will ever stop. I'm not sure what to do but Im throwing the idea around that I might need to add the finasteride. I wish you luck and hope you have success and I know just how difficult it is to deal with on a day to day basis. It affects everyone around you. I'm doing my best not to worry as much as it is putting a strain on my relationship at this point. That is even more important than my hair honestly however I doubt I would look too good without hair:o)) Please keep us posted.
GOD Bless
Mauri

Hi Mauri
Thanks for responding. Can i ask did you get all your blood tests done for them to make any definite decisions with regards to cause ? If you dont have AGA then finasteride might not be for you. Ive just been formally diagnosed with a biopsy for AGA so am going to try all the meds now.......I know how hard it is. Im not in a relationship and couldnt actually even imagine a man touching my hair or seeing me first in the morning. If your with someone who loves you though I guess it must feel supporting, but you still must feel completely alone in this. Ive read about a lot of women who have found it so hard to deal with that it has effected life with their families. Good luck to you Mauri......may we all be re-haired !

Finasteride,,,,,,,,please help

Salis,

I am almost 50 and have never had hair loss before until now. None hereditary either as far as my family can remember. Did have tons of stress the past year but I basically think that has nothing to do with this other than maybe kick starting what was going to happen. My estrogen fluctuates up and down and has been seen as high as 160 and low as 81 lately. My HRT was up'd just last week however Ive only been on it 6 weeks. Dont know if it will level my hormones off or not since Im still in peri. Dr. Redmond suggested I might try the propecia saying it may help with hair regrowth or in case there were any other factors like DHT that have come into play over the past 4 months. I dont know which route to go. My hair is feeling better texture wise this week but even with taking biotin and eating better the past 3 months, not seen much regrowth yet. Like all of us, I dont want to make the wrong choice and make things worse. My hair is acceptible enough but with another month of loss it may not be. Sometimes it feels like dying a slow death however Im thankful that isnt the case. As far as my relationship he just said I seem like a totally different person since this started and not sure he can deal with it anymore. What a strong person huh! I just said, be glad its not you.

Hi Mauri
I know its so awful not knowing what to do. Everyone's option seems to be that they end up just having to try all sorts. I dont suppose it helps with you as you dont have an formal diagnosis of AGA. You hit the nail right on the head...it does feel like dying a slow death. It feels like im waiting for my life to end, just surviving one day at a time. Im not saying that losing their hair doesnt effect men, but if they had the same social pressures as us women do (i.e. to be beautiful and not having hair is socially horrifying !) then im sure they wouldnt last a minute. In fact I could place money on it.
Sorry to hear your not getting the support you should from your partner. The bottom line is that people REALLY DONT understand.
Going back to the hair thing........have you checked all your hormones ? Perhaps its more estrogen that you need or to have a steady flow rather than rapid fluctuations.
