Nails (Anemia & Hair Loss) |
Obviously we all know hair can be an indicator of health issues and that nails are the same. For the past few weeks I have noticed a horizontal 'ridge' across my nails which is at almost exactly the same point on each one. It feels like a bump when I run my finger across it. Apart from that my nails are fine, although they are a bit thin/break easily due to low ferritin. Anyone got amy ideas what this ridge signifies?

Thanks for that V. It doesn't look like any of those pictured as I have no pigmentation as such, just a horizontal 'bump'. I'm wondering whether it's a 'marker' of some kind.....although what stage it signifies I don't know!

I think it probably does signify something, especially if you have it on more than one nail. Perhaps some sort of disruption to your system....have started or stopped any meds lately?

at the Mayo Clinic's site:
"Vertical nail ridges, which run from the cuticle to the tip of the nail, are fairly common. They don't indicate serious illness and typically increase with age... (however)...If your fingernails change color or develop horizontal ridges, see your doctor. These changes may indicate an underlying health problem."

No, I'm only taking ferrous sulphate/vitamins etc. I've found this:
Horizontal grooves
Fine lines running across your nails may indicate a recent illness which often slows nail growth, producing ridges in the nail root that are pushed outwards as the nail grows.
Solution: The ridges will grow out with time.
I'm, therefore, wondering if it's simply due to slow nail growth as a result of low ferritin? I suppose it stands to reason that my nails could be have been affected as well as my hair.

It's funny because we just recently had a thread with the same question about horizontal, bumpy ridges on nails. If you search the archives for ridges in nails you will see that Ginawat asked about nails on Sept. 18 of this year. An article that v sent explained the horizontal ridges as due to stress. I have these ridges and, yes, I'm stressed because of my hairloss!!!

Strange that others have them too...what do you think it signifies? I'd be interested to hear if anyone has had an explanation from their doctor regarding it. I'm off to see mine next week and don't know whether to point it out.

Found and read the old thread.....I was on holiday at the time so missed it! My nails are exactly the same as Ginawat. I'm finding it difficult getting ferritin levels up and my GP thinks I have an absorption problem. Also, it doesn't help that I'm naturally low in stomach acid due to being blood Type A. I'm sure the ridges are an outward sign of nutritional deficiency and subsequent slow nail growth. As said, it makes sense that if your hair is being deprived of certain nutrients to feed more important organs, then so will your nails. My ridges are in exactly the same place on each nail and it looks like they are 'growing out'. If it was a sign of stress then surely the ridges would be a continuous process and I would have more than one 'bump'?

Would you ask your doctor about the ridges? I don't have any other doc appts. until February. I'd be curious to hear what your doc says about the ridges. Thanks!

I expect to be fobbed off with the usual diagnoses, ie. stress, anxiety, wearing too much nail varnish, 'nothing to be worried about' or shrug of shoulders but will ask the question anyway and let you know.
Talking of pathetic diagnoses given by doctors, I went to see an endo regarding the myriad of symptoms I had (before being diagnosed with low ferritin/anemia....which would account for many of them). He told me all my symptoms were common with people who were suppressing memories of an awful childhood. I tried to tell him that the notion was a load of codswallop as I had a wonderful and very happy upbringing but he wouldn't hear of it! Almost as bad as the gynae (when I complained of 'women's problems, which turned out to be a fibroid) who told me I had too much time on my hands to worry about such matters and that I should take up flower arranging or something similar.
The mind boggles.....can anyone top these?

Hi Aggie
Do you have a receding hairline?
You say your temples started to fill in; this is where my hair loss is most noticable. The majority of people on these boards seem to think this is mostly the result of AGA. And yet certain hair loss sites say that AGA is mainly on the vertex, with a hairline maintained. It's all very vague and sketchy.
With regards to doctor's comments, I've had:
"Get on with your life and enjoy yourself."
"Massage is said to help."
"Your problem is psychological rather than physiolocial."
"Stop looking at it, and get on with your life."
"(Laughter) Don't worry, you're not going bald;
female pattern hair loss tends to progress over decades."
"Nobody else cares if you go bald; only you. Cheer up."
"Have you heard of Regaine?"
Marvellous.

Hi Steph. My first area to thin was my right temple and eyebrow! but strangely this has grown back and I have some new regrowth at my temple. The rest of my hairline isn't receding. I didn't expect to be the only one who had been fobbed off or be on the receiving end of insensitive comments by so called specialists. It's a sad state of affairs isn't it?

No, not white streaks. But I have a white furry tongue occasionally.
I believe this can give some clues as to what is going on in your
digestive system, or liver.

Steph,
The white furry tongue is yeast. I'd talk to your doctor about it.....

I did. I asked if it was candida, and she said no.
Conventional medicine doesn't seem to recognise things such as candida.

They do if its in the form of oral thrush or vaginal yeast infection!? A white, fuzzy tongue is mosy definitely a clear sign of yeast and your doctor must be a screw-ball to ignore that! I'd get another doctor!

.....doctor's opinion re nails |
Showed my nails to my doctor and was told that horizontal bumps/ridges (without any type of pigmentation of the nail bed) is a type of indicator/marker, ie. it signfies a period when the body was under significant stress normally due to illness, accident, major operation etc. I mentioned this to a friend who confirmed they had exactly the same thing after having a serious accident in childhood. I was told that the ridges should eventually grow out.

Nails |
Horizontal ridges across the nails are called Beau's lines.
They appear at the base of the nail weeks after a stressful event has temporarily interrupted nail formation.
