Weekly Chat 10/15 to 10/21 - 2007 (Accutane or Medications Induced Hair Loss) |
Good morning ladies... how was everyone's weekend?
Well I made my goal last week, of course it took me until Sunday to do it...LOL, but I went for a walk, only about a mile but I got in two pilates classes and lots of yard work so it felt pretty good.
My one dog, Bella, well she is not doing so well at all. She went in for ear surgery last Monday, had a real hard time with that and we noticed her getting really stiff through out this past week when she would get up and this morning she was just falling all over the place. I think it is hip displatia or arthritis but I am not sure. She has an appointment at the vet this afternoon so I will know more then. She is an older girl, 12 years old, she has had a good run and we love her but I can not watch her suffer so if the vet says that it is not going to get any better from here then we have to make a tough decision... She was a rescue dog, they were going to put her down if no one wanted her, she came from a breeder and her mother was mated with the wrong dog so since she could not get any money for the pups she was going to destroy them. Me and bunch of other folks stepped in and took all of the puppies. I have had her since she was about 10 weeks old and she has had some health issues in the past... but it is so very sad to see this happen.
I need to call the derm and make an appointment I think. My shed has increased and the last time I was there he did mention spiro, I hate to do it but I can not afford to lose much more hair in my bang area or the top of my head... sigh. I will really have to think more about it though before I make my final decision. And I would like my blood work run again...
Did everyone make there goal for last week? What is your goal for this week?
My goal is to get at least two outside walks in and also to get to the gym at least one time.
I will check back later on.
Have a wonderful day ladies!

Hello!
Susan,
I am so sorry to hear about your dog, I know he must be a big part of your family and the decision is going to be tough. I have an 18 year old cat and last week I took her to the emergency after work because she was not eating for 5 days. They ran all blood work to rule out liver and kidney failure and diabetes but could not find anything wrong. They suggested I take her in the morning to my vet to run x-rays to see if was cancer or a GI infection. That all turn out good. The vet tried to open her mouth and she wouldn't. Finally my cat "Taz" hissed at the vet and she saw a large tumor on her tongue! That explains why she wasn't eating! They told me to have a biopsy, but most likely it is cancer and at her age, it's just going to spread. She gave her a cortisone shot and antibioticts to see if the swelling goes down. For the most part it did. ( I think) Because she's eating a little now. But the Vet's recommendation was to have her put down. So I had a long talk with Taz (hehe) and told her if she dosen't start eating that she would have to go to sleep, and I wouldn't see her for a long time. She heared me. LOL and now she's trying like hell to get food in her.
I have had her since my son was 6 months old, I couldn't bear to lose her. I hope it's something that your vet can fix on your dog, I would hate to see anyone go through this. I hope I don't have to make that decision for another couple of years. Try not to stress to much, that could be why your shed has picked up. And I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers today!
Good luck on your walk! I walk an average of 3 miles a day at work alone. The place is huge, so I have no choice. My goal for the week is to sleep in pass 8:30 am. LOL I have been getting up way to early, and then I am sleepy all day, not good.
Talk to you later,
Peggy

Sorry to hear your dog is not feeling well. My older female has hip issues too. Let us know what the vet says.
How long has your shed increase been going on? Did you have low ferritin? Definitely you should get some more bloodwork done.
My new goal for the week is to increase my cardio workouts by 5 minutes.

My shed has picked up for the last couple of weeks. Yes, my ferritin was at 13 when I was tested and it has been a while so I think a recheck is in order.
Great goal Roxeli!
I will let you know what the vet says... I am eager to get home to her. I hated to come into work today but have limited time off for the rest of the year so I am here until 3 PM.

Good morning ladies!
Well, Bella went to the vet and he thinks that it is arthritis or hip dysplasia, he put her on an anti-inflammatory and will see her again in two weeks. She is much better this morning... It is not her time yet I guess... we were very relieved and happy about that.
How is everyone doing today?
Rainy here today... but that is ok since we need it. No school tonight! Yeah! We have a one week break and then four more classes and I am done, at least with the classes, then I have to go and take a 3 hour test and pass that to get my certification.
Have a happy day ladies!

SUSAN: I'm glad Bella was well enough to go back home.
Well my daughter's cycle only lasted 3 days again this month reinforcing in us that going raw was the right thing to do.
I'm finding that the only disadvantage to being raw is that I'm freezing my butt off now that the temps are cooler. I'm drinking herbal teas to keep warm. A high fat, junk food diet keeps you warmer but I'm definitely NOT going back to that.

Happy Wednesday Ladies!
How is everyone doing today? I am doing very well actually... went to the gym after work yesterday... was there for about an hour and did a mile on the treadmill and a mile on the elliptical machine. Not much, I know but at least I am back at it again and it felt GREAT! I slept well last night for the first time in a long time! A very long time. I got up this morning and did not have that sluggish feeling that I normally wake up with... I attribute it to two things, the increase in exercise and the being at about 70% raw... it is finally kicking in!!!
We took Bella and the other two girls for a walk around the park last night. It is only a 1/4 of a mile but that is about all Bella can handle right now, bless her heart! The vet says to keep her moving so that is what we are doing. My husband and I used to walk all the time when we first started Weight Watchers together... it was fabulous! I have to tell you... really awesome time together... we did not have any interruptions (cell phones, etc) and we were able to talk about the days events and what ever else we needed to talk about... I have to say we were much better connected. I am hoping that we go back to those walks but for now the walk around the park with the girls is a step in the right direction.
There was a thread started about the Oprah show that aired yesterday. I saw part of it at the gym. I think that the doctor had a ton of valid points but I did not hear her address womens hair loss... did I miss that part or did they just not address it? I sure wish she would do a show on it... I truly do, bring it out into the open and get us some REAL help no matter what the cause...
I guess I need to learn to meditate... I have never been good at that as my mind is thinking about a million things to do rather then sitting there meditating... LOL. Any suggestions on how to successfully meditate? Has or does anyone here do a meditation routine that has some helpful hints or steps?
Well ladies, I need to get back to work or at least pretend that I am working... LOL.
I will check back in a bit, I have almost nothing going on at work right now so I stop by here often to see what is going on... helps to pass the time and keep my mind occupied.

Hi Susan, I'm trying to do the "meditation" thing, whenever I think of it. I've downloaded some meditation music off of iTunes. Sometimes after visiting this forum, I go to my music library on iTunes and listen to the meditation songs. I close my eyes, sometimes stretch my neck since this is where I hold stress, and just try to relax for about 10 minutes.

I tried to get my daughter to meditate. She would get laugh attacks and I would get so annoyed with her. LOL
Finally, she was able to do the visualizations exercises for short periods of time. I would tell her to imagine her hair follicles waking up. I also made her imagine long thick hair. She must have been doing them right because she said she could feel scalp sensations. LOL Later on she was able to do skilled relaxation. There are some sites for that:

Roxeli: As always, you come through again! Many thanks.
I am out of here shortly, off to my evening Pilates class... I am so ready for Friday to get here.
My hair is getting longer now and kind of straggly looking, I have an appointment with my hair dresser for Friday afternoon for a good trim. I am eager for this old high lighting to go away... on dark hair it just looks terrible when it is growing out... makes my hair look dirty if that makes sense. Rosie (my hair dresser) loves to cut though... last time I went in for a "trim" I got more of a "cut" even though I stressed the trim part...LOL. I hope for a better result this time around.

Happy Thursday all!
Well it is raining cats and dogs here... lordy but it is coming down in sheets! Tornado warnings all over the place and traffic was a mess this morning. I am so blessed to have a very short commute to work... on a good day I am here in 15 minutes or less. But we have had such bad snow storms in the past that it has taken me up to 8 hours to get home... crazy! The one hill that we have here in central Indiana lays between my work and my home so it always causes major problems and back-ups when the weather rears it ugly head... Now, in the winter, when I hear snow is coming I pack up and leave... LOL. I don't mind driving in the snow it is just all the traffic and such that drives me nuts. But hopefully we won't have to worry about that for a while yet.
How is everyone doing today?
Not sure if anyone saw it or not but Roxeli posted an awesome article on TE on one of the threads... Annie started the tread and it is about losing short hairs. If you get a chance to read it please do. I felt much better about my current path then I did before. I was thinking about spiro but am going to hold that thought for a while and see how this plays out.
I am going to the gym after work today and hoping to get in more of a work out then I did Tuesday night... LOL. I wimped out and did not do much but getting back into it is hard and I will just keep working at it to build up my strength again... I really love how I feel when I am done. The stress is gone, I feel loose and limber, and I feel like I have helped my body to get rid of the garbage through a bit of sweat...LOL... Ok, lots of sweat.
Well have a great day ladies...
Remember, keep the faith and do what you have to do to keep your mind pointed in a positive direction and keep the stress lowered!

Us Californians are whimps. LOL We don't know what bad weather is. I'm just hoping we don't rain on Saturday. My Mom is a member of the local garden society and they are showcasing her yard on Saturday. My Mom and I landscaped it together and created a Mediterranean garden. They're charging people $10.00 each to see my Mom's garden and 3 other amateur local gardens. The mayor is supposedly going to attend and the press will be there. She lives in a small town, can you tell? LOL
Here are some pictures of her garden:

Morning ladies! I am here, just moving slowly this morning...LOL. After two good nights of sleep I think I got a bit spoiled because I did not sleep so well last night so I am kind of sleepy this morning.
We had more wicked storms come through last night, Indiana got hit pretty hard, no damage directly around us though but the tornado sirens were going off most of the evening. We are supposed to have a wonderful fall weekend here though so things are looking up . I am going to try hard to get my husband up off the couch and get a nice long bike ride in.
Well I have a hair appointment this afternoon and I just don't know what to do. I was trying to let my hair grow out but it is just a mess with the thinning and the old high lights... not to mention I just don't look good in long hair. So I am thinking of getting more then a trim but I am just not sure what to do... decisions decisions... LOL.
My son called me from school last evening, warned me about the amount of laundry that is following him home and requested meatloaf for Saturday supper... the kid is easy to please... LOL. I told him that I would make sure that he got his meatloaf along with mashed potatoes, his favorite.
So how is everyone doing today? How has everyone progressed on meeting their goals for the week?
I did go to the gym last night and did a little bit better on the elliptical and will keep doing a little bit more each time. I have to build up... this old body would go into shock if I did anything else
I will check back later on ladies, have a happy day and keep the faith!

I'm doing good as far as goals go. I finally made it to 50 push ups. Last night I did 52. I have no clue where I'm going with all these push ups but I use push ups to measure my increase in upper body strength.
Exercise TV has approached me about doing a blog on their website. I would be updating it weekly and reporting my diet, workout regimen, etc. They've offered me free online access to a personal trainer. Violet Zaki, one of my favorite Star Trainers, would be my personal online trainer. They'll also send me more New Balance gear.
Besides Susan, who else here exercises regularly? I have some good links on exercise. I think I'll start a seperate thread. Hmmmm. Maybe even a challenge!

I exercise 3-4 times a week. I mostly go to this insanely intense cardio/strength training class. Sometimes I do yoga and sometimes Zumba. Roxelli, do you live in L.A.? That's where I lived for most of my life until my husband's jog relocated us. I bet you could find a Zumba class offered near you. It's the latest rage. It is a dance/exercise class that incorporates all different kinds of latin dancing...mambo, belly dancing, etc. It's a lot of fun and a good workout without realizing that you're exercising.

I live in Modesto, California.
I'll have to look into that. Sounds fun. I love dance workouts. I do a few of the Exercise TV's VIDEO ON DEMAND ones. I take a belly dancing class with my daughter and I love it. I speed walk for an hour every day. I also do yoga, pilates, cardio kick boxing, strength training, and just different cardio workouts. Oh, and then I do push ups before bed every night.
I'm going to do an exercise challenge thread over the weekend. We could all step up our fitness levels, lose weight, relieve stress and unleash the powerful woman that lives within each one of us.

Roxeli~That's great news about your blog! How exciting for you! I used to work out with a trainer years and years ago. I was fairly hardcore about my weight lifting. Now, I just do pilates, strength training and some dancing. I've been ill lately, so I'm unable to work out properly. But I try to do as much as I can. I hope you get that blog! I'll read it daily.
