basis for aga diagnosis (Rogaine, Minoxidil) |
Last year I had an iron deficiency and lost aboout 1/3 of my hair. My iron is now high and no regrowth. Just went to a derm who has diagnosed aga, I dont know on what he bases this. My hairline and temples went thin when I had the deficiency. My bloods on testerone, thyroid, dheas, iron is normal. He didnt comment on any miniaturization. I think its just the fact that my hair didnt grow back. What do you think.

Hi Cinderella,
I think based on the fact that your iron was low and now it's high with no regrowth that he's probably right. Secondly if I remember correctly you had a seasonal shed again this year so you hair continues to thin without regrowth. I would look into the possibilites of treatment for your AGA, there are several ladies that have had success with different medications. From everything I've read it seems the sooner you treat it the better the success rate.

Thanks, when I say seasonal shed, it is a shed that is regrowing. My doctor thought my hair wasnt regrowing due to peri and hormones going up and down. I dont want to start a treatment if the diagnosis isnt 100% I had 10 hairs in my comb this morning when I brushed.

I never did believe my hair loss was due to iron deficiency. Iron ALONE does not cause hair loss - it is merely a contributing factor. Silly derms/trichols will go on about iron deficiency causing hair loss imo. If you believe it, like i did for 1-2 years, and you keep losing hair whilst the iron is being "upped" then you'll feel even more frustrated that you didnt look deeper into the diagnosis.

It frustrates me that these so called specialisits in hair loss can get away with saying such things. At my last Derm appt, he goes "you do know your ferritin needs to be above 70", and "oh, look, your Zinc is at the lower end", to which i replied i want to go on dianette and i aint sitting this out another 6 months without it (as he had suggested).
I even said to the dizzy derm, like many have on here, that if iron alone causes hair loss, then how come those in lesser developed countires with below parr nutritional intake HAVE FULL HEADS OF HAIR!
UGH!

get in to see an endocrinologist if you can. Derms don't know a thing about hairloss

Sorry, you are wrong. OK, it might be the cause for only a small minority of women and because of this I agree that all other options should be explored, however, low ferritin alone can cause hair loss. I speak from experience.

»hi,
sorry to direct the flow of the forum away from you but you seem like you are on here a lot and i just dont know where to turn. am currently writing this through flods of tears at 11.30 at night!can i tell you my story, anyone who has any advice please let me know..
i was on the pill for over 10 years, came off a year ago, 3-4 months later lost a load of hair, mainly around my front hairline. went to tricologist in london, she put me back on the pill for contraception (marvelon), got me on iron as my ferritin was 26 (its now 86).
went back a few months laters as i noticed the very front centre of my front hairline was getting thinner. tric said it could be AGA so put me on minoxidil 3%.
it did get better, and i have a lot of new short hairs round the front hairline, but now suddenly in the past month or so it seems to have got dramatically worse -especially in the very front middle of my hairline. my parting is also wider but i do style it in the same parting day in day out. i am gong back to see the tric on friday but i am struggling toget through each day now.
i am mega stressed, really down and i am just wondering if that could be causing it or if it is AGA. also, my head seems to tingle at the front of my head. please help! xx

Anonymous - i was on dianette until last week and Regaine (minoxidil) 5%. Im still on the Regaine. The combination has also made my head tingle and somewhat itchy. I just think it's one of the side effects. As you are seeing improvements in your hair, then hopefully you can put up with the tingling effect
