Hi,
I'm new here and have been taking a combo of Finasteride and some scalp drops similar to rogaine 5% for a year with good results. Now I am considering trying to get pregnant.

Has anyone stopped Finasteride to get pregnant? I am wondering how long I should go off it before trying to conceive. I will ask my derm when I see him next month but want to get this process going so am thinking of stopping sooner. Do you stop cold turkey or wean off? What if I don't conceive for many months - would I be in for some serious hair loss??

Thanks for any experience and advice any of you may be able to share. This seems like a great forum!

Could you tell us about your success with finasteride? its always inspiring to hear from someone who has had success with a treatment! What was yr diagnosis, how much fin did you take, for how long, and how good were the results?

You must stop the fin before attempting to conceive, I think I read somewhere that you should give it a few months to totally be eliminated from your system .

Finasteride causes birth defects so I would consult not only derm but gyno and endo if you have one to make sure you are off of it for a long enough time before trying to get pregnant. I believe it said defect in male genitalia.

Thanks - I think my derm said a few months too. I just am not sure now whether to stop all at once or to wean off it slowly.

As for my history, my derm suggested taking the following combo: 1) finasteride (I can't recall the dosage but I take one pill daily), 2) scalp drops - his own concoction which contains 5% minoxidil, 3) biotin 5000, 4) multi vitamin and 5) Vitamin B complex. I also went on Yasmin and then switched to Yaz.

I started this treatment last December and within a month, my hair completely stopped falling out! I was thrilled. I also noticed regrowth after another month or two. I went back after 5 months for a check-up and he said I had excellent results, but that he wouldn't know for sure if this combo was truly working until after a year of using it.

In the last several months, the shedding has returned but probably not as bad as before and I still have noticeably more hair in the problem areas than I had at the outset. This may be a result from first switching BCPs and then going off Yaz (it made me crazy plus I want to try to conceive in a few months).

As for my diagnosis - he just said I have female pattern baldness. I am very interested in reading more on this forum to see if I need to ask more directed questions or get any tests. I do know it's not my thyroid. My hair loss was initially triggered with a miscarriage and then after delivering my baby (now 3 yrs. old), I realized it had been too long to just be post-partum hair loss.

Thanks. I definitely will be careful to make sure I give enough time and consult my doctors before actually starting to work towards conceiving. I was just curious if anybody had experience with this to find out some experiences and information before calling the doctors.

Jmfdone,

Have you found out how many months we have to stop finasteride before concieve? should we stop 5% rogain as well??

i am curious too, cuz i am on 2.5mg finasteride daily now, but i may get married in one or two years. i think my bf will want to have kid as soon as we are married. (and he will definetly kill me if he knows i am on finasteride)

Finasteride should be stopped at least 1 month prior to getting pregnant.
Rogaine should be stopped as well as it is also not safe.
