What to expect when starting (Propecia, Finasteride for Women) |
I've just started finasteride a week ago. Should I expect a shed like Rogaine or not? If it is going to work for me, what is the typical time frame for a decreased shed? Earlier posts make mention of combining BCP and finasteride. My testosterone is low and my estrogen is already high. Is that the goal of adding BCP to the mix?

Hi,
I just started finasteride 2 weeks ago today and havent noticed anything. I asked the same questions you did but have not received any answers yet. I think V has taken it. I take HRT. I believe the studies have shown that the women that have had the best luck with fin have either been on BCP or HRT. I dont think women in menopause have had good luck keeping or growing hair but not sure about that study. Dr. Redmond did give me the HRT and recommend the finasteride. I am 50 and in peri. If I notice any changes I will post. Good luck. This hair loss is hell but I hope it works for you

» Did the doctor give you any indication of how long it takes before you know if it will work? What dosage are you taking? I am 46 and probably in peri. My 40's have been pretty much terrible because of this hair loss nightmare.

No he didnt but I may email him since I do not live in NY. I never had any hairloss after washing (not even 10 hairs) or during day until May this year. Period has always been regular until last October. Its been nothing but downhill since. Never realized how much hair i had until Ive lost it every day since end of May. Not sure if my estrogen needs to be up'd but something is wierd because I got warm and cold all night two nights ago and Im on HRT plus Ive never had that since I started HRT at end of August. I plan on emailing him this weekend after I get my estradiol result from last test.

If you've only been losing since May, you may well have a chance to recover. I've been at this for over 6 years and am trying to remain hopeful, but it's getting pretty bad. I've had more bad days than good days in those 6 years.

Im sure trying to save it but found out today that now my thryoid is getting weird. It has changed in less than 2 mos. and my thyroid is enlarged. Have to take some kind of thyroid uptake test to see if my pituitary is working. Crap, what else can happen to harass my hair. Now my estrogen is too high. I almost want to give up however I dont think I can. The mental stress of this is enough to put you in the grave. Ive been healthy my entire life until now and I am thankful for it but its scary to think I might have to spend the rest of my life without hair and it all happens so fast. I never dreamed this would happen to me or anyone.

hi losingit, there's another thread on finasteride on the last page.
Update on finasteride 2.5 mg for last 9 weeks. Shedding levels as follows:
week 1 190
2 180
3 165
4 180
5 180
6 140
7 140
8 140
9 140
I was told that you should start seeing a slow in shedding in the first couple of months and at 3 you should know if its working in terms of reducing shedding. As you can see my shedding has decreased slightly. This week the average is about 130. I am hoping that the numbers continue to drop, but am just very cautious as Ive been on Cypertrone acetate and see this pattern and then a massive shed that went on for about 5 months before I said enough. Let hope that it works for us. Everyone is different and the hair cycle thing is difficult to understand sometimes. Some have a slow down in shedding and never have a shed afterwards. Sorry cant answer your question more clearly.
best of luck

Hi Salis,
I was wondering if you had any issues with your cycle since starting the fin?
I have only been on it 17 days but my period is due yesterday, today or tomorrow and nothing yet. Strange since it had become more regular with the added HRT. I am shedding more lately it seems. However, Ive been so up and down over the past 6 mos. its hard to tell from what.

Hi Mauri
Was going to say it sounds like something might be up with your thyroid, due to such changes in body temperature. Yes my period has been more or less non existent for quite a few months now. Tiny if any bleeding at all. I just got a really heavy and painful bleed yesterday for the first time in a long while. 20 days gap between this and when the last one started.

Yes I was going every 25 days until I started the finasteride. With the thyroid acting up now Im wondering if I even need to take the finateride. Im afraid to stop it now after finally starting just in case it has anything to do with helping me grow or keep any hair. Im waiting to hear from Dr. Redmond and I have a test for the thyroid on Wednesday to see what is going on with it. I am growing new hair and it feels silky but its funny that my nails dont look as good or grow as fast as they did when I began the HRT. Thanks for the info. I am shedding more this week than I had been. 160 yesterday

How do you come up with the counts? Is it just what you lose in the morning prep or do you keep a running total of what you pick off your clothes, what you see falling to the ground, in your food, etc... all day long?
Unfortunately, my doc said that the results are pretty quick to reduce shedding (within a couple of weeks), so I'm at week 2 with no noticeable change and getting more depressed. I feel this is my last hope. I'm glad to hear your dr. say it is months before any results. I'm on 1.25 mg so who knows if that's even enough to help.
I'm just so sick of this awful shedding. I can't stand it anymore. The hairs that are falling out are getting shorter and thinner. I especially feel the loss on the really short and thin ones because those are probably gone forever.

Well Ive been on 2.5mg for 3 weeks and my shed is not any less, in fact its a little worse and no period. So if it works within the first 2-3 weeks, its the wrong drug for me.

Mauri - Dr. Reed in NYC told me that finasteride takes about 3-4 months to begin to see imporvement. Hang tough. Reed also prefers women to be on 5 mg.

Hi Sara,
I tried to email you but page said feature was disabled. Ive been wondering whether going up to 5mg would hurt. However, I would have to get Redmond to give me the prescription for it. Ive been on it almost 9 weeks. Did you notice your scalp getting oily after taking it? Maybe it was a coincidence but mine did at about 5 weeks. (could have been DHT) Thats why he added the spiro. I havent read of Dr. Reed. Do you like him? Sorry to hear your TE returned. Hopefully by the end of the 4th month again it will stop. I know how frustrating hairloss is.
