SUCCESS with Avodart and Rogaine (Propecia, Finasteride for Women)

OK yall, I have successfully grown HAIR! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I started Rogaine on 7/30/07 and started Avodart on 8/9/07. I had a haircut last Saturday and my hairdresser was really astonished! I know you will all have a jillion questions so I will TRY to get on this website fairly often to answer them for you.

I take an Avodart one per night. That's all. I buy them online without a prescription and they are the generic dutas.

I use the Rogaine once per day, in the morning, on wet hair and I massage it in on the top and sides (probably double the dose it says to use since I have to use it all over).

I have also been using that Nizoral (or however you spell it) shampoo in both the prescription and non-prescription strength.

I am 48 years old (female) and in perimenapause. I do not have any medical condition other than dysthymia (ongoing depression). I weigh 125 and am 5'5" tall. I smoke, a few at night, none during the day.

My individual hairs have always been very very fine. I've never understood how yall could count your hair loss since mine is almost impossible to see! So anyhow, the size of the hair shaft has not changed but I have definitely grown more of it. I do not have health insurance so while all of you talked about getting miniturization tests, etc........... I could not do any of that. I decided just to go for it - to brew up the most potent brew I could and hope for the best. I did my research and went with Avodart since it blocks DHT in 2 ways as opposed to one. I never had kids nor wanted any so the birth defect thing is a moot point for me.

I wear my oh-so-fine hair in a pixie-cut which for the most part lies flat to my head. I had noticed the thinning hair because of how I comb it wet - I started to see more and more scalp thru the row marks the comb left. NOW the row marks have definitely grown closer together and almost gone altogether! I used to have to artfully comb those fine strands over areas that were thinner than others - now I don't have to worry about it so closely!

Needless to say, I am thrilled. My plan is to stay on Avodart for another 3 - 6 months (since I have that many anyhow) and to stay on the Rogaine. But eventually I want to cut back the Avodart and see if I keep the hair just on the Rogaine.

Just thought I'd update yall!

I just started using rogain 5% foam and I'm so scared, and any positive experinces will help give me strength

That's great news Pixie, I hope it continues to grow stronger and stronger and thicker and thicker and thank you for letting us know. It would be really good if you could keep us updated. I'd be interested to know if thats the minoxidil or the avodart or both. Also is this the first bit of regrowth you've had for a while and has it grown back thicker and does it continue to grow in length. Also how long have you suffered with hair loss and what other things if any have you tried ?
thanks pixie and the very best of luck with it all
ps if you have aga then you might need to continue with the avodart. Dont really think minoxidil does much after a while. ive been on it for three years and often wonder if its actually done more harm than good in the long run.

No, I never had the dread shed. I watched my hair catcher thing closely and it was bad a few times - but no worse than I'd seen in the past. No, I do not have AGA (Is that alopecia or something)? No, I'm not using 5% foam, I'm using the lesser strength liquid that you put on using an eye dropper. I think the Rogaine is really getting the job done. I did not expect results this soon. Best of luck!

Pixie, Congratulations to you! You must be so happy!!! Thank you so much for posting your good news.
Do you know what the "trigger" was for your hairloss? I've thought about starting Avodart. Is it okay to stop after a while or do you have to stay on it like Rogaine?

Oh Pixie, I got so excited and happy that you saw results on Avodart SO SOON, then I read you don't actually have AGA? Then it probably isn't the Avodart that is helping, but the Rogaine. Well, in any case, good for you, and hope it continues.

SUCCESS with Avodart and Rogaine

I don't see why not. Androgenetic alopecia is believed to be related to the hormone androgen and particularly the hormone DHT. Avodart affects both ways DHT works with hair growth. This is why I started Avodart in the first place. I've not been diagnosed with AGA however my hair has been thinning all over which is how AGA is defined.

This is the only regrowth I've ever had because I've never tried before. I chose the minoxidil/Avodart route because according to my research it had the best chance of working. My hair loss has been coming on for a long long time and it's been very gradual, just thinning all over my head until it became hard to cover it all.

I'll keep you informed as to my progress.

OK maybe there's something I'm not understanding about AGA and maybe you can help me. How did you get diagnosed, what kind of Dr. did you go to? According to my research AGA is caused by the hormone androgen and DHT and Avodart directly affects DHT. How could this not be a good thing for folks with AGA to consider?

Just look it up on Wikipedia for a good definition and it references the male prostrate drugs.

It very well could be, don't get us wrong. It's just that it seems, of all the reasons people lose their hair, AGA is the hardest to treat. Some things work for some folks, others don't. Compare to, say, iron deficiency, which is fixed just by raising your ferritin.

I went to a derm who did a scalp biopsy.

Even so I'm greatly appreciative for and encouraged by your post! It could very well be good news for all of us--and I'm glad it's good news for you. You say you get Dutas from inhousedrugs.com, correct?

Not all androgenic alopecia is caused by excess androgen as you hit peri/menopause it can be cause by low or fluctuating estrogen. If that's the case Avodart wouldn't help a bit. I think most scalp biopsies are worthless. It certainly sounds like you have AGA to me and congratulations I'm glad the Avodart is working.

SUCCESS with Avodart and Rogaine

Hi Pixie,

Sorry, I must have misunderstood you then--if you DO have AGA (I thought I'd read you don't), then the regrowth is almost certainly from the Avodart (and probably Rogaine as well, they work synergistically) and I am back to being very excited!

I know you are in peri but I'm not sure what that means in terms of periods, but did Avodart change them? (more frequent, less frequent, less heavy, more heavy?) I've heard a few premeno gals say Avodart lessened period cramps which would be a huge bonus for me.

Do you have any other side effects particularly cognitive ones?

You are correct that all AGA is DHT-triggered, but there's also an immune response involved too. In your case, I'm guessing your hair loss was caught quite early on, so few to no hairs were permanently lost to AGA. (which CAN definitely happen to women too)

Thanks sooo much for sharing and continued good success.

SUCCESS with Avodart and Rogaine

That business about follicles shutting down permanently--I thought that's not the case, that that's partly what all this hair multiplication research has shown?

» Hi Pixie,
»
» Sorry, I must have misunderstood you then--if you DO have AGA (I thought
» I'd read you don't), then the regrowth is almost certainly from the
» Avodart (and probably Rogaine as well, they work synergistically) and I am
» back to being very excited!
»
» I know you are in peri but I'm not sure what that means in terms of
» periods, but did Avodart change them? (more frequent, less frequent, less
» heavy, more heavy?) I've heard a few premeno gals say Avodart lessened
» period cramps which would be a huge bonus for me.
»
» Do you have any other side effects particularly cognitive ones?
»
» You are correct that all AGA is DHT-triggered, but there's also an immune
» response involved too. In your case, I'm guessing your hair loss was
» caught quite early on, so few to no hairs were permanently lost to AGA.
» (which CAN definitely happen to women too)
»
» Thanks sooo much for sharing and continued good success.
»
» » OK maybe there's something I'm not understanding about AGA and maybe
» you
» » can help me. How did you get diagnosed, what kind of Dr. did you go to?
»
» » According to my research AGA is caused by the hormone androgen and DHT

SUCCESS with Avodart and Rogaine

Hi again!

I had all but stopped having periods prior to beginning the Avodart. I have one once every few months or so. I can't tell any difference now that I'm taking Avodart in terms of periods or cramps or anything.

Do I have any cognitive side effects from the Avodart? Not that I've noticed. However, my memory is shot due to perimenapause - lol!

Since I've never been diagnosed with AGA, who knows if I have it but if the main symptom is an overall hair thinning as you age, then that's me.

Best of luck to you all!

SUCCESS with Avodart and Rogaine

Yes I think that's the name of the online place I buy them. Basically I just find the lowest priced thing I need and buy it, they're all about the same.

» » OK maybe there's something I'm not understanding about AGA and maybe you

»
» It very well could be, don't get us wrong. It's just that it seems, of all
» the reasons people lose their hair, AGA is the hardest to treat. Some
» things work for some folks, others don't. Compare to, say, iron
» deficiency, which is fixed just by raising your ferritin.
»
» I went to a derm who did a scalp biopsy.
»
» Even so I'm greatly appreciative for and encouraged by your post! It could
» very well be good news for all of us--and I'm glad it's good news for you.
» You say you get Dutas from inhousedrugs.com, correct?
