Were you diagnosed with AGA? Sadie said if you have AGA, then birth control pills make it worse? That scares me. My scalp biopsy said AGA with minuturization. But then I hear they are not always correct. My total t is 93 but my free T is 0.18, and my progesterone was 0.5 on the 11th day. So I don't know what to think? Sounds to me a hormonal problem? or maybe a little of both? I'm going on BCP this month, I won't know unless I try it. Can't go on yazmin because it has spiro in it. I tried spiro and my shed went up the first day with numerous side effects and that was only 25mg. I hope dinnette works for you and mine as well. One day we can share success stories!!(I'm Praying:-D )

I dont know off the top of my head if your readings are normal. Mine are except fot Thyrioid antibodies. I was told by a few doctors by them looking at my hair that I have AGA, but I have not had a biopsy done. They say BCP's that have high androgens in them are the ones bad for hair, not the Dianette types. I have no idea how an non androgenic BCp could cause hair loss. I am at a loss, lol. Good luck to both of us!! I have been thinking about getting hair transplants for a couple years now. The Dianette was going to be my last try at medications. But I suppose I could try a DHT blocker next.
I honestly cant say if the Dianette is working or not yet. I'll keep posting.

Hey Taz - i cant say BCP's make AGA worse! Just that its made MY hair worse. Even "hair friendly" BCP's like Yasmin and Dianette have caused increase hair loss with females. Nice and Ginawat, two posters on this forum, had hair loss experience on or after taking Yasmin, and ive just had it with being on Dianette. This doesnt necessarily mean you or BH will have it - hopefully you will have an improvement!

I googled dianette and hair loss endlessly, and there is a whole host of posts re. feedback on femalefirst.co.uk, where some talk about further hair loss and some talk about fantastic growth/thickness. It varies, we're all different, and our bodies will react differently.

Hey BH - we're the same in the sense we have normal hormonal levels but high thyroid antibodies and have been diagnosed with AGA.

Well, my Derm couldnt understand my dianette related hair loss but was sure of the increased thinning and miniturisation since being on it.

Good luck to you both xox

Please dont think i posted this link to discourage you, but just to make you aware dianette can be a temporary cure or culprit to hair loss. I'm clearly not the only one whose had this adverse reaction.

Hi Sadie,

I have also read up TONS on all this stuff, almost to the point of obsessing!I have read good and bad reviews. Some lost hair others gained hair. I will not know for sure until I try. At what point did you notice it made your hair worse? You only took it 3 mobths, right?

Agreed - as i keep saying, we all vary - it can be good or bad for our hair, but we wont know until we try! I was convinced i needed it and wanted it so badly i fretted for 1.5 months when i didnt get it from my GP cos he wanted a second opinion on my antibodies! lol.

Anyhoos, i took it for a full 3 months. I started the 4th month but stopped after 3 days. As a result ive got a second period in one month :( I noticed at the start of the third month that things werent going right. I honestly didnt notice further thinning prior to this. I rang my derm a couple of times and he said do 4 months and come in January, but i just thought to get off it.

Just keep monitoring your hair whilst you are on it - you are the best judge of what is happening. Remember it takes a while for new hair and existing hair to improve, and i have read one should be on it for at least 12 months to notice any improvement. Fingers X for you!!!

Another thing - sometimes starting period causes some females to shed just before, and then the hair gets back to normal. I had this on my second month of dianette and then my hair seemed ok, but it was in the 1st or 2nd week of my third month that i started calling my derm for my concerns. We had two conversations and he said sometimes females have a seasonal shed so keep taking it (ive never had a seasonal shed) and the second time he said it can get worse before getting better. But by the end of my third month i.e. early last week, i just felt something wasnt right. I am also using Regaine 5%, so i cant say for sure its the dianette but i havent heard of horror stories since using regaine, other than the dred shed which i had and which was "physical" hair fall as opposed to further thinning.

What is the doctor going to do for you since your last visit? What does he hope to find out by the hair pull? Did he have a theory on why the Dianette didnt help? Are you able to get transplants?

I'll get the result of my pull test middle of next week. Apparently this will show if the shedding picked up as a result of dianette (which to me and derm was obvious it had but he wants to make sure!).

My last pull test showed a shedding of 18% on top and 3% at the lower back. The 3% is normal shedding rate, but 18% isnt - i.e. hair being lost at a faster rate than it can be replaced if you get what i mean!!! I asked if we should do a scalp biopsy to make sure, but he said no as it was obvious the front top had become miniturised since he saw me last.

I've ruled out another BCP - at one point the Derm suggested maybe switch to Yasmin, but i think ive had enough of playing with my hormones. He agreed there was nothing else he could suggest. I am using the Regaine 5% but its early months to say if that is effective. By the looks of it, it isnt but i should give it some more time yet.

Ummmm, nothing else. My next step is to go for hair extensions and / or looking into wigs. It would be of immense help if i had someone who could understand me outside of the net.

PS: your question re. theory on why dianette exaccebrated the hair loss - he had none and couldnt understand why it had as it is meant to have feminising effects. I told him of the countless web entries and he accepted they could be true but hadnt seen patients have an adverse reaction himself. Well, there is always a first, lol!

Since you have only 3% shed in the back, then you may be a candidate for hair transplants, yes?? That would be a great thing.

Nah, i'd much rather get a wig than have a hair transplant, which doesnt always have a success of working. I think ive tried enough experimenting since this all began in 2003: floresine, zinc, dianette, regaine 2%/5%, dianette, saw palmetto, various ayurvedic hair oils and shampoos, boots thickening spray etcetera etc etc....
