4.5 months on Regaine 5% (Rogaine, Minoxidil) |
Hello ladies,
Anyone having any joy with Regaine 5% in regrowing lost hair?
I am noticing a difference, but only on my forehead, lol! I seem to have short hairs sprouting. I must have inadvertantly allowed some Regaine liquid to slip down from my scalp.
Noticing nothing in terms of improvement/regrowth on the scalp hair though.
Let me know how you all are getting on, and if anyone knows whether it is possible to regrow hair JUST on Regaine/Minox.
Thanks! x

Hi Sadie,
I am not taking Regaine but I read a lot about it in the internet as I am considering starting it. From what I read it is possible to regrow hait JUST on Regaine / Minox. But it is just the same as with Dianette, for some it is possible ONLY on Dianette to STOP the hairloss and regrow hair. For others, not. For some Regaine doesn't help at all, for others it makes things only worse ( I read about a few where the dread shedding never stoped, not even after a few months !!) and for some others it does wonder. So it's just like with the pill & co everybody has to test it for herself and it brings nothing to know there is SOMEONE out there that did regrow hair ONLY on Minox.

After the dread shed of rogaine, I had alot of regrowth within a year. A few years later, now it seems to not work anymore, but it did at first! I also have peach fuzz hair on my forehead and ALL OVER MY FACE!

I've been using only Rogaine for about 6.5 months now since my derm doesn't think I have AGA. I see regrowth all over. But I couldn't tell you if it's from Rogaine or would have happened anyway. All during my hair loss I've had regrowth. It was the massive shedding that was killing me. The shed is down...about 20 hairs after showering and 40-50 after blow dry. These numbers are amazing considering my shed after showering was up to 300 for a long time but I still wish it would drop down even more. At first I did not want to use Rogaine and now I'm afraid to stop.

Chris/Bunnyheater - since you have had success with Regaine 5%, may i ask what kind of regrowth you got? i.e. was it thick terminal hairs or thin hairs?
I cant tell if i have regrowth on my head, other than on my forehead. Having looked at some wedding fotos taken mid-week, the forehead hair is quite noticeable! lol.
I've been contemplating chucking the Regaine treatment given i havent noticed even a cosmetic difference within 5 months, and they do say give it 4 months to notice anything. Your thoughts please?

Hi Sadie, My regrowth looks totally healthy and thick. I do see very light colored hairs at my temples as well but that's how the longer, thicker hairs I now have started out. I see new hairs down my part, at the sides,at my widows peak and at the back of my neck. I can't see the back of my head but I assume it's growing there as well. A trick I use to see the new hairs is to get a piece of white paper or cardboard and I hold it against my scalp. Any new, shorter hairs stick up in front of it and make them visible. All of my hair is growing in length, even the new hairs.
Are you not seeing any regrowth? I'd hate for you to quit the Rogaine when you've come so far. I've heard Rogaine can take up to a year. Why don't you stick with it for a year and see what happens?

Stay with Rogaine or minoxidil if you can especially if you are not experiencing any side effects. It is very inexpensive and is one of the very few proven treatments in the world. You may not see the kind of regrowth you desire, but it is good as a maintenance product. It keeps your follicles alive and may make you a better candidate for future treatments such as Hair Multiplication.

Thanks Chris. I do have few baby fine hairs popping out according to the last hairdresser i went to, so i am thinking/wondering if this will turn into "healthy" thicker hair as time presses on. Hmmmm.
I thought maybe growing forehead hair was a good sign that the Regaine was working, lol!!!
I'm having hair extensions fitted this weekend and i dont think i can continue using regaine as it will contribute to the "loosening" of the extensions, but i might just press on because, as you said, ive come this far.

Does it keep your follicles alive though? My telogen count has evened out at the top of my head, but i dont know if that was down to 3 months on dianette or 5 months on Regaine. How to know which treatment is/was better???

Study: Minoxidil inhibits apoptosis (cell death) in hair follicles |
Study: Minoxidil helps inhibit apoptosis (programmed cell death) in hair follicles,
"Minoxidil helps inhibit apoptosis (programmed cell death) in hair follicles, according to this new study below. Hair follicles undergo massive apoptosis when switching from anagen to catagen.
One of the hallmarks of MPB is a decrease in the length of anagen. So, it would seem that minoxidil is capable of countering this specific aspect of pattern baldness (i.e., short anagen phases). The study below also notes that minoxidil increases the proliferation rate of dermal papilla cells (this also likely contributes to lengthening of anagen)." from Almighty in HairSite's Men's Forum.
J Dermatol Sci. 2004 Apr;34(2) 1-8.
Effect of minoxidil on proliferation and apoptosis in dermal papilla cells of human hair follicle.
Han JH, Kwon OS, Chung JH, Cho KH, Eun HC, Kim KH.
Department of Dermatology, Clinical Research Institute, Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul National University Hospital, 28 Yongon-Dong, Chongno-Gu, Seoul 110-744, South Korea.
Background: Minoxidil has been widely used to treat androgenetic alopecia, but little is known about its pharmacological activity or about the identity of its target cells in hair follicles. We hypothesized that minoxidil has direct effects on the proliferation and apoptosis of dermal papilla cells (DPCs) of human hair follicle.
Objective: To elucidate the mechanism of topical minoxidil action in terms of stimulating hair growth.
Methods: We evaluated cell proliferations in cultured DPCs by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) and measured the expressions of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), Akt, Bcl-2, and Bax by Western blot. We also measured elongation of hair follicles in organ culture.
Results: Minoxidil significantly increased the proliferation of DPCs. The levels of ERK phosphorylation and of phosphorylated Akt increased significantly 1 h post-treatment; percentage increase of ERK phosphorylation was 287% at 0.1microM and 351% at 1.0microM of minoxidil, and that of Akt phosphorylation was 168% at 0.1microM and 257% at 1.0microM of minoxidil. 1.0microM of minoxidil increased Bcl-2 expression over 150%, while 1.0microM of minoxidil decreased Bax expression by more than 50%. Moreover, a significant elongation of individual hair follicles in organ culture was observed after adding minoxidil.
Conclusion: Minoxidil promotes the survival of human DPCs by activating both ERK and Akt and by preventing cell death by increasing the ratio of Bcl-2/Bax. We suggest that minoxidil stimulates the growth of human hairs by prolonging anagen through these proliferative and anti-apoptotic effects on DPCs.

Didnt you say that extensions are of no real benefit to you because a lot of your loss is up front/bang area and temples? Just curious...

yes i did BH. But ive also just come from one integration hair system consult and having myself measured for an integration system tommorow morning before my extensions appt elsewhere.
integration systems take 2-3 months to arrive as they are tailor made, so in between im having extensions to:
1. see how they feel
2. to cope in the interim period with my hair before the system arrives
really cant go on like this

I dont know how to explain my hair loss other than the stages it has taken. My temples started thinning in 2003, then the sides, the corners of my head and top back eventually. The hair is very thin, sparse, wispy, unstylable, and i cant run my fingers through because there is no density for me to run my fingers through as im pushing the hair. Does that make sense? It's like my hair is a cap of fine material mashed against my scalp and fixated as it doesnt have bounce/shine.
Im peeved off today cos my damn doctor got last months blood results for my iron but it turns out the hospital didnt test my thyroid antibodies...the REAL reason i went!
Another thing, im notiching more hair fall since these damaned extensions went in on saturday. Gonna have a re-think!
