Semi success VERY LONG (Menopause, Peri-menopause & Hair Loss)

Its probably a bit early to post this but I want everyone to know that I have had some success within the past week and am crossing my fingers that it will continue until completely stopped. I do hope to grow some of the hair back that I have lost in the past 7 months. For those that are not familiar, I am 50, in peri and all of a sudden last June my hair began falling out beginning with 20-30 then gradually rising over the next several months to about 130-150 per day. After much testing and the usual run around crap all summer I decided to go to Dr. Redmond in NY. I have been on vivelle dot .075mg / prometrium since end of September. I also had to add levoxyl since I am becoming borderline hypothyroid. Dr. Redmond also prescribed finasteride which I have been on for 6 weeks and then 100mg of spiro the past 2 weeks. The past 3 weeks my hair has really been hit hard moving up to 180 and over 200 on some days which may have been dred shed from fin. I also had the burning and itch when a hair would fall out in my hand. I am not sure which medicine or if it was the combination but about 8 days after I added the spiro my hair started declining a little at a time and 10 days later my shed is about 80 per day. Although tests showed that my testosterone and free testosterone is very, very low on blood tests, I must have DHT or testosterone in the hair follicle. Also since my estrogen has declined over the past year, Dr. Redmond said some women can still have testosterone issues because when the E declines that opens up room for the T to invade the hair follicle if one is sensitive to it. I have never had oily hair or skin and about 2 weeks ago it was terribly oily. I did use some Neutrogena T-gel to help with that until the medicine helped. I feel I have lost about 50% of my hair the past 7 months and did not realize just how much I had even though it is very fine. As you all know it just keeps coming out and you wonder how you can not be showing scalp yet. My head was hit hardest at the temples in front of ears and in vertex. That has already begun to regrow there with some of it sticking straight up. Dont know if I will get even half of what I lost back or if it will completely stop but I wanted everyone out there to remember not to give up and keep looking for answers. Fortunately I met someone on the board that had similar issues and she directed me to Dr. Redmond as well as encouraged me everyday for the past 7 months or I dont know where I would be today. I have felt terrible for the past 7 months losing hair every single day and I really thought I would be bald. I may still be one day but Im praying this continues and that all of you are able to find a solution that will help you. I will post again in a week or so to let you know if my hair has continued to improve or not. One down side and thank goodness I am blond, I have begun to get tiny white blond hairs on my face which I had years ago before electrolysis. I can only attribute that to the finasteride I suppose but I will deal with that when and after my hair grows on my head. The past week has been so much better and a long time coming. Even though it is still shedding some I feel like a different person so Dont give up!!!

» Helloe Mauri,

So nice to hear the positives!

I have to remark on you findings of "new hair sticking straight up".

That's when I, too, noticed that my hair and scalp were on the mend after a bout with TE several months ago.

In my experiences, I have found hairloss to be an extremely soul-diminishing event. It must feel similar to losing a breast. To me, no occurance in life has been more miserable.

And nothing can compare to the thrill of seeing some (or much of it) grow back. I compare that feeling to seeing my baby for the very first time.

Hair loss has made me one-dimensional.

I'm delighted for you, and wish you continued progress in your recovery!

HA

Thanks Hairyape,

I'm having another up and down all of sudden with my shed again. I sure enjoyed those 10 days or so with the lower shed. I'm a different person when my hair appears to be healing. It was much needed. I wish everyone hear could have a week or two like that. Its so helpful after all those stress filled months. I cant figure out why it would slow for 10 days and start up again but it has. (boo hoo) All of us here know how devastating it is to have to deal with the wash and comb out everyday. If nothing else, it was a very good Christmas and Im thankful for it!

Mauri-
My overall shed is decreased but I can have a slightly different amount of shed each day most of the time. Sometimes only a few hairs, other days more. Also, I see days where the drain has nothing or the drain has enough to clear it. Maybe the fluctuations in shed are normal. I think when you have a period the spikes might have something to do with it. I did have several days where I counted the exact same amount of hair each time but I think that is unlikely to see too often. Do you have an idea what a average amount if shedding is for you at this point? I don't know if you are on only progesterone or the bcp now but it takes a while I think to get a feeling where you are at. I would imagine once you are post meno the shed amount would be more constant.

Mauri,

Can you remember what you might have done differently during those 10 days that you had a reduction in the amount of shed? Something must have caused you to shed less. Or something mus have triggered a TE .

Interesting that it would stop and start with little time in between.

It didnt stop, it went down by 100 hairs for almost 10 days. Now back up again to almost 200. My hair even felt better with a dryness or clean feeling to it. So strange. Today its yucky again and I didnt count this morning but its more than 100 for sure, I can tell by the pile:o))) Didnt start my period yet and its day 31 however I started spiro last month so might be related. Ive been on HRT only 3 1/2 months so I would guess im not regulated yet and since Im in peri who knows how long this can last because it just started in June 07. Gosh this could last another 2 or 3 years before I am in menopause. Turning 50 isnt very nice:o))) I was always told it was hell and now I know its true:O)))
