Interesting... (Hair & Scalp Odor Problem) |
Hello, I'm surprised that no one has posted anything for a while.
I've been experimenting with cutting out all sugar from my diet, and the result was that I experienced no odour (even without washing hair) for as long as I could manage not eating sugar. As you can imagine this is quite hard, and I managed a strict no sugar diet for about a week. I should also say that I avoided eating starch too. The main reason for this is that yeast feeds on sugar, and can convert starch into sugar for food. That was the theory, and in practice I assume that I actually starved my yeasty scalp and disallowed it from creating any odour. After returning to my normal sugar intake, however, the odour returned =(.
I think everyone should try this for about three to four days if they can, to see if it works with them. If it works it can be useful to eliminate your scalp odour when you need to most. For instance, if you know you have a job interview on a Wednesday, try cutting out or at least reducing your sugar intake starting from Monday. Then you will have less to worry about. =)

Nax,
It is GREAT to hear from you! I check the forum regularly but haven't had much new to post. My scalp is a bit sensitive these days. The Jason Dandruff seems to help more than the Jason Jojoba at the moment, but I wash every other day and seem to do well alternating the 2 shampoos every other time I wash.
How interesting you are finding the elimination of carbs and sugar to help! I would love to hear more detail on what you are eating at meals, snacks, etc. I have a problem eating too many fiber foods such as fruits and veggies due to my ulcerative colitis. I can eat most veggies in MODERATION and mostly bananas and apples and grapes in moderation as well. Like 1 serving of each a day. Carbs that have low fiber such as white rice and non whole grain bread are comfort foods to my stomach. So as you can see it will not be easy to do the no carb thing but I could give it a try. I would like a little more detailed info on your typical food day, such as a carb free breakfast, etc. Are you saying you eat no grains at all or are you saying you eat no carbs at all, such as no veggies?
I look forward to hearing back from you!

Its great to hear from you too! =)
To be honest, this was the first diet I'd ever undergone so I didn't really plan it out too much, I just made sure that none of what I ate contained any sugar by looking at the ingredients on the packets. Oh and I stayed away from fruit because they contain lots of sugar. As for starchy foods, I mainly avoided pasta and white rice and bread. Apart from that I was pretty much eating whatever was possible.
I started the diet after reading up on a condition called systemic candidiasis, whereby the cause of the problem is an imbalance in the natural yeast levels residing in the gut. The yeast turns nasty when it overgrows the probiotics that are supposed to keep it in check, and can then be transported to other areas of the body via the bloodstream. It is plausible for the yeast to infect the scalp via this method.
I am now thinking that maybe our conditions are more of an internal problem rather than an external one, and would probably be more effectively solved by an ingestional remedy rather than a topical one.
Other forums dealing with yeast infections stemming from the gut, focus on probiotics to get the gut flora balance in check again, starvation of the yeast to rid the body of excess amounts, and something interesting I'v come across is garlic, a powerful antifungal that when ingested, can be secreted in the sweat to kill off fungus from the inside out.
Will probably be trying the garlic next, but my doctor has just prescribed me a dose of antibiotics for a month on an unrelated condition, so I'll see what these do to me before I try the garlic.

Ok, this is strange, but it's been over a week now since I finished the antibiotics my doctor prescribed me, and I can definitely say that I am not smelling anything coming from my head.
The name of the antibiotic I was taking is Flucloxacillin, and I was on 250mg every 6 hours for a week.
My hair is flakier than usual now, but I am so happy about the odour being gone.
Don't know if this is going to be permanent, so will keep you updated...

Nax,
When you say flakier do you mean as in dandruff?
That is interesting that you are odor free. Let us know how long lasting this is.

Do oyu lose hair where you have the flaking? Do you see any connection between the odor and hair loss?
Thanks

Hello all,
I seem to still be odour free since my last report. Even after not having a shower (only for the purposes of the experiment!) for about 90 hours the smell was minimal (I could smell some greasiness towards the end, but i assume that was just dirt and other stuff).
The flaking still persists, it looks like dandruff to me Betsy.
Gina I have not noticed any unusual hair loss.

Nax,
That is great you could go for 90 hours! I go 48 and don't push my luck! But I do get an oily smell after 2 days. The dandruff would be due to fungal stuff, am I right?
I have not had any dandruff for over a year. I think the Jason Dandruff shampoo I use takes care of it. But the oily smell I can identify with.
Keep updating.

Hey Betsy, to tell you the truth I'm stumped.
I was positive that I had a fungal infection as the signs were there, dry face, yeasty smell, dandruff, and more recently my experiment to starve the yeast by not eating sugar had succeeded.
Now after the period of antibiotics, the smell completely disappeared.. was this coincidence or did the antibiotics cause this effect, and if it did was the infection really fungal after all or was it bacterial? I just don't know.

Nax,
That is interesting. I just did a search on the antibiotic and I could not take it because I am allergic to Penicillen. Too bad. That would make sense that it is a type of staff infection though.
I am very interested to see how long it stays away from you now. Keep posting and let us know how things are going!
And the flaking makes me curious! Keep us posted on that too.

Nax, will you share with us what lead your doctor to prescibe the antibiotics? What kind of doctor prescribed them for you? Thanks for all of the helpful information you've provided.

Yes Betsy, you may be right, it could have been a staph infection.. that was what the antibiotics were prescribed to me for by my GP in the first place. Mollie - the antibiotics were prescribed to me as I started getting lots of spots around my face. I had been prescribed acne medication on my first visit, which did absolutely nothing, and then I was rediagnosed with barber's itch (psycosis barabae) which is a bacterial infection in the beard area (I am a guy by the way =D). This type of bacteria is called Staphylococcus aureus (staff), and can infect the scalp too. I may have had a staff infection on my scalp (and not a yeast infection as I had thought) which the antibiotics killed off, thus making me odour free. Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I have had no recurrence of odour up till now. Will keep you updated.
