Can demodex mite cause hair loss?

Just want to share some email inquiries we received from some of our readers. People with similar experience are encouraged to come forward and share with us your story.

Hi... I'm not sure if I'm emailing you directly... but I've been desperate to find a cure... something that will eventually k-i-l-l what I'm certain is the demodex mite in my scalp hair follicles & periodically in my eyelashes & face. It's been picking areas mostly around my hairline & occasionally my eyelashes hurt... but once I pull the right one... *sigh* the root exhibits a hard plug on the end of it. The scalp follicles have what looks like a transparent plug surrounding the portion of the hair shaft that gets pulled out of that follicle.

My aunt had a very stinky... never-shampooed Golden Retriever... I got this after I was around the dog. Is it contagious from human to animal?

Any links or information you could send me would be very much appreciated.

What about this Sea Buckthorn oil I've been reading about... is this just another snake oil?

As of now, there is no conclusive evidence which suggests that Demodex mites indeed cause hair loss in humans. There was a study many years ago, I believe it was by Nioxin. They later introduced a product called Semodex which is suppposed to get rid of Demodex mites on our scalp. I might be wrong, but I think that product had been discontinued.

They study they used was also raised more questions than answers. For example, if demodex mites indeed cause hair loss, why do 90% of the men exhibit pattern hair loss ? It does not make sense that the mites only focus on one area of the scalp and not the other.
