Ok, Here's what I wish someone had explained to me 5 years ago.
Dr's say "no, can't take finasterdide because it affects male fetus if you get pregnant". This scares the @#$% out of women and they don't want to take it (I know, I was there, I heard it again from a derm just last week).
I've done research (now that we have internet and a lot more info available) what they do NOT tell you is that the problem only happens if you get pregnant WHILE you are taking it. I.e., if you want to get pregnant, stop the drug, wait for it to clear your system, wait a bit for your hormones to normalize and get pregnant then without any issues.
How long does it take? finasteride clears your system in a couple of days, avodart takes few months. How long does it take for your hormones to normalize? Talk to your Dr and get a blood test, likely a couple of months after that.
The info above is based on my conversation with "motherisk", which is a program run by Sick Children's hospital in Toronto, which tells women about drugs and potential effect on their pregnancy.
I wish they had explained this to me years ago instead of scaring me into going bold! I hate them.
