need advice! QUICK! (Yasmin) |
I've been on yasmin for 2 weeks. Day 9-12, I had headaches and breakthrough bleeding. That has stopped and I feel better in some ways and my skin is a little less oily. My doctor wants me to take the pill without a break for 4 months or so. She gave me one pack of yasmin and one back of orthrocyclin and said to see which one I feel better on. (orthro has a slighty higher estrogen) The only thing is my hair is falling out more on 2 weeks of yasmin My questions is should I keep taking Yasmin or start the pill with slightly higher estrogen? I have less than a week to fiqure this out!

My testosterone in jan. of 2005 was a 23 and in aug. of 2006 it was a 59. Just got my testosterone retested but waiting for the results. My testosterone doubled in a year and a half. I stopped taking the pill over 4 years ago and thats when my problems began but they also have gotten worse. My skin and hair have gotten really oily and I breakout every where! I guess what I'm trying to figure out is the problem high testosterone or low estrogen.(or a combo) Had my e tested on day 5 and it was a 33. I'm also not ovoulating on my own. P was tested on day 20 and only reached 3.5 Needs to be aleast a 5 to have ovulated)Any thoughts?

Looks like you may have PCOS unmasked by coming off birth control pills. You could have PCOS and the ocp just disguised the symtoms until you came off it!

» I found this story, and from I read it sounds like alot of stuff I read about when women get off of birth control pills. Hope it helps!!
Natural Progesterone cream before, during and after pregnancy.
Natural Progesterone testimony by Janene.
I have written this in the hope that it will give online information to, and help women from suffering the indignities that I suffered so unnecessarily.
Natural Progesterone cream opened up a new life for me.
By Janene Dixon-Smith
I started taking birth control pills in 1993, that was the start of the decline of my health. For the next three years my health deteriorated drastically.
I suffered from migraines almost every day; I had insomnia, severe back and neck tension and falling hair.
My periods were very irregular and I suffered from PMS so badly, it kept me in bed. Throughout this time I felt depressed and moody, I couldn't understand why I was having these problems. Eventually my doctor suggested that I go off the pill, and he gave me antidepressants to treat the depression, insomnia and migraines. This however, started a whole new range of symptoms. I developed acne on my neck and shoulders; I had no libido and also developed dark pigmentation on my face.
I was on and off various medications for about 2 years: in hindsight all I was doing was treating symptoms and generating new problems and then treating those symptoms. In 1998 we wanted to start a family, I had been off the pill for about 2 years. I assumed that I hadn't fallen pregnant until now through luck. However, after six more months of trying to conceive, I bought a saliva test kit to determine fertile times in my cycle, and according to the test kit I wasn't even ovulating.
I had heard about Progesterone but my doctor advised me against using it. Fortunately for me, due to the persistence of a friend I started using Natural Progesterone cream. By the end of the first month I could feel that there were changes in my body!
In the second month I was beginning to feel human again and most of the symptoms that had plagued me for so long were disappearing. My skin was clearing up, my hair stopped falling, and my sex life was back to normal. I was using 1/8th of a teaspoon twice a day.
I fell pregnant in the third month of using the natural progesterone cream.
I continued using the cream; to my delight I had new hair growth, and my hairdresser commented on how healthy my hair was. The acne cleared up, the pigmentation marks on my face disappeared and I was feeling really well.
Throughout my pregnancy I had no water retention, my hair grew thick and healthy, I had no thrush or bladder infections, my skin was better than ever and I suffered from very little morning sickness. Everyone commented on how well I looked, and I hadn't felt so well in years. I gained 11 KG's during my pregnancy and gave birth to a 3.65 KG baby boy, Thomas.
I returned to my pre- pregnancy weight only 2 weeks after Thomas was born, and I continue to use the natural progesterone as recommenced for my cycle. I also take ½ teaspoon of Barleygreen at each breastfeed, breastfeeding is always a pleasure. I have plenty of milk and Thomas put on weight quickly during the early weeks, 350 - 500g a week.
Thomas has been a relaxed and satisfied baby from the start, and is still being breastfed at 8 months old. I will always recommend the cream. it helped improve my health and I have a perfect little boy to show for it.

That could be the case. I have a hard time getting doctors to even consider pcos. They say I'm too thin. What do you think about the pill? Should I continue with Yasmin or go for the one with more estrogen? I am feeling better on Yasmin but the increase in hair loss is pissing me off! Thank you for the quick replies!

Hi Rachel,
It sounds like the right pill but you might need Spiro in conjunction with it. A lot of girls with PCOS are on a combination of Spiro and Yasmin with good results. Although the Yasmin has a Spiro like element to it you may need a higher amount to counteract the testosterone. I wouldn't add more progesterone at this point since that could possible cause a higher testosterone level.

I wouldn't add more
» progesterone at this point since that could possible cause a higher
» testosterone level.
Delilah,
Is it possible that progesterone causes a testosterone level?? I thought it helped balanced it out, and helped with androgens? You might be on to something here. I was using the compound progesterone cream for five days, and in that time my scalp got more flaky with sebum and my hair around my temples were coming out like water. I hope it didn't raise it too high, My t was starting to lower and I noticed a lot less hair shedding. Now its back up again. How long do you think the p cream will stay in my system? I've been off for 2 days now.

You need to be careful just adding progesterone bc the wrong amounts or types can convert to testosterone. I don't know what your status is or if you're pre or post menopausal but that also makes a difference.
Are you using Spiro to help bring down your T?

Rachel if your problem is elevated T (oily skin etc) your problem may not be estrogen related. I would see if you could get a prescription for Spiro to see if that will help bring down the T. I think your doc is on the right track with you taking the pills continuously and certainly 2 weeks is too soon to tell if the Yasmin will be helpful or not. I would wait at least 6 weeks to 2 months to see if there's a difference. How much more would you say your hair is falling out?

Delilah,
My doctor(Vliet)thinks it's a combo of testostrone being too high for my low estrogen levels. My testosterone is still in range(still waiting for my new test)but the high end of the range. I guess what I'm trying to say is if my estrogen and progestrone were normal then my t wouldn't be a problem or it would be lower. Does that make any sense? My hair is falling out 1/4 more but with over 4 years I can't have a high shed again and I just have this feeling it's going to keep going up. Do you think it might be one of those things of it will get worse before it gets better? Like when started spiro sometimes your hair falls out more before it stops.

Delilah,
I just thought of something after I posted the above post. When my hair first started falling out(when I stopped the pill) I had my testostrone checked over a year later, this was 2005, my t was a 23 and my hair was falling out so maybe it's the low estrogen all along. I didn't start to get oily skin till 2006 when my t was a 59. so maybe having really low estrogen for so long has cause my t to raise. What do you think?

Hi Rachel,
I think my last post was to Tazmepeg, but what I wrote to you was I think you should stick with the Yasmin for a while, at least enough for your hair to go through a cycle. I would take it non stop like your doctor suggested so there's no breaks in the medicine and the DHT won't be able to creep back in again. If it's not strong enough ask to see if you can have Spiro added to your regimen. Two weeks is too soon to tell and what's coming out now is probaly from what went on in your life 6 weeks ago.
I wouldn't stay on it past 3-4 monts if you see no improvement. I would also ask to have your T retested to see if the Yasmin is helping at all. If it's not ask for the Spiro.

I wonder if this then explains that my being on dianette, which adds progest and estrogen, caused the major hair loss episodes i experienced in two seperate incidents of taking it!

Oh dear - i hope for our sakes the effects arent so long lasting! I've been off dianette for 3 months (was on it for a total of 3) and my hair is getting progressively worse. Pathetic huh....

Hi girls,
I had a little different experience than you on the progesterone cream. My t tests slightly high and I was using 20mg 1/day. It did seem to moderate the oily skin but after a month and a half had not slowed my hair loss.
I'm now trying Yaz low-dose bcp and 200 mg Spiro (dosage with best results for women's hair loss). I think my ratio of t to e was off too. I can get the hairloss to slow dramatically just adding exercise and using a anti-DHT shampoo but I think I have TE too so am trying to use estrogen to awaken things as I'm getting so thin... No additional hairloss on either to date. Been on spiro 2 weeks and Yaz for 1. We'll see. Good luck!
