Duasteride in a 46 year old (Propecia, Finasteride for Women)

Effective treatment of female androgenic alopecia with dutasteride
Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, Sept-Oct, 2005 by Malgorzata Olszewska, Lidia Rudnicka

Dihydrotestosterone is the main molecule responsible for androgenic alopecia. Finasteride, which reduces transformation of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone and decreases dihydrotestosterone activity, is approved for treatment of androgenic alopecia in men. We describe the case of a 46-year-old woman with androgenic alopecia, non-responsive to minoxidil, who initially benefited from finasteride. Due to only limited improvement after finasteride and persisting profound psychological distress resulting from androgenic alopecia, another 5-reductase inhibitor, dutasteride, was introduced. Clinical evaluation and trichogram were applied for assessment of dutasteride efficacy in this patient. Additionally, mean hair diameter was monitored by means of computer dermoscopy. After 6 months of therapy, significant improvement was observed and after 9 months the clinical diagnosis of androgenic alopecia could no longer be made in this patient. No side effects were observed. In conclusion, theoretical data and our experience in this case show that dutasteride might develop into a true alternative in treatment of androgenic alopecia.

Hi guys! I thought I'd check in and low and behold yall are talking about me - lol! I stopped taking the Avodart because I decided my hair regrowth was due to the Rogaine for Women I was using. I still think so. I've had great results on it. Stopping the Avodart seemed to have no affect on the regrowth. I stopped the Avodart because I didn't want to stay on such a drug forever without dramatic results and also, I like to donate blood and you can't donate blood on it. As it is, I'll have to wait a full 6 months to donate again.

Best wishes to you all!

Be careful donating blood. I believe it is why my ferritin level went from 63 to 27 in less than a year!

Pixie, I just went on Rogaine. Doctor told me to use men's foam 5%. and he said I could put it up to my hairline, even though instructions didn't say that. How long have you been on? Also I tried Spirolactone, upset my GERDS horribly. Does Adovert (ph.) work in same way and how much were you on?

GERDS is gastric esophogeal refux disease. It's where people take Nexium Pepcid et cetera. It feels like for me pain in upper chest and spicey foods irritate it. Yours might be mild if you don't notice it.

Jann
all the derms I have gone to told me rogaine and birth control is all they could tell me to take. I asked about all the other drugs (Spiro, Flutamide, etc.) and they all would not RX them to me. SO I ordered Diane 35 and started that in October. Then I started 1mg finasteride in January, then switched to .05mg Duasteride in March, and I have been using 5% minoxodil for about 4 years as well. My hair looks worse than it did before I started the Daine 35. I wonder if Estrogen is bad for MY hair....

GERD is Gastroesophageal reflux disease. In this the acid contents of the stomach goes up in to the food (which normally does not occur)causing symptoms like heart burn.

Spiro is not associated with GERD.
