Please HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Telogen Effluvium) |
Hi,
My left eyebrow fell off almost completely, i have few hairs left on the middle and at the area close to nose, but the end of the brow is nonexistent.... I don't know what the f**k would cause that with ALL blood tests being normal. I have NEVER had that before. Once in a while my brows would shed but not like this time. I am afraid it will stay like that. Hair loss and brow/lush loss are both bad, and i experienced both, but to be honest, living with one brow only is a nightmare... Something is really wrong with me and i cant find the answer, i've gained soooo much weight, now am close to 190 lbs, and i always was very slim 115-125 lbs. I gained all this weight within the last year because was eating at Tim Horton's breakfast, lunch and dinner. I could not cope with my hairloss anymore so i started eating just to find at least some comfort in sweets. I started to eat good again about 6-8 weeks ago, only salads and meat, but still don't lose any weight. I weigh myself everyday and don't lose even 1 lbs!!!! About 2-3 months ago i also developed some red lines on my breasts and on bum, it does not go away. It looks like a stretch marks, i am embarrassed to show it to the doctor. If any one know anything, please help!!!!!! I am loosing my mind...

Weight loss or gain can cause hair loss. Any change with the body causes hair loss. How is your iron, zinc levels, b12, etc? If you are eating healthy and protein at every meal, it could take 3 months for your hair loss to slow down.
Don't eat very little to lose weight b/c this will also cause more hair loss, try only losing 1 to 2 lb's a week. And don't exercise too much either.
Hope this helps. I know how hard this is.

Losing your eyebrows is a sign of hypothyroidism. So is sudden unexplained weight gain--or inability to lose weight. Ask your doctor to test your TSH, Free T4, Free T3...and most importantly, your thyroid antibodies.
Also, many labs and doctors still go by the old "normal" TSH range of 0.5-5.0. But it has been narrowed in recent years to 0.5-3.0. IDEALLY, your TSH should be under 2.0
Make sure he/she shows you the results. Do not take their word for it if they tell you the results are normal. Too many doctors will tell you that your thyroid labs came back normal...but they're using the old measurement.

one more thing |
TE doesn't cause your eyebrows/lashes to fall out.
We all wish we had TE...because it eventually stops on its own. I convinced myself for 2 years it was TE and it was a waste of time and hair. Deal with the problem now. It won't get better by itself. The sooner you begin treatment, the better. Good luck and be strong. This isn't easy and doctors will not be your friend. You must do your homework and learn as much about hair loss as you can so that you can make smart decisions that are right for you.

Talk with your doctor about all symptoms and show him the "stretch marks". Check about Cushing-syndrome.

You really need to get a thyroid panel done. You may want to go so far as to get a sonogram on your thyroid as well. Please see a specialist (endocrinologist) and not a generalist.

Thank you so much to everybody who responded!!! I just googled 'cushion syndrome' and i have every symptom on the list. It's so scary, I am so so scared...it all makes sense; I was worried since 2003 like crazy and it probably affected my cortisol level production and now i have this. I will definitely check with my doctor this Sunday and will ask for the test. Will those pink lines disappear from my breasts or is it permanent? Does anyone know? Thank you so much to everyone. God bless!

You will receive the best advice from an endocrinologist. The disorder I mentioned is called Cushing's syndrome (not "cushion" , but it's rare. I hope, I am wrong. Take care!

I agree with JL...get all your labs done and most of all do alot of research on your own. I think we have all learned the hard way that most doctors are a dissapointment, we go in expecting alot more sympathy and concern than we even come close to getting. Get personal copies of all your labs to keep for yourself, it will come in handy as you go around to different Docs until you find the right person to help. An endocrinologist is probably the best place to start. Best wishes!

megan is right....don't starve to lose that weight. First you need to find out if your thyroid is off. And, the other blood levels megan mentioned are a good check. I lost too much weight too fast 4 years ago and that is when my hairloss began. I was already really thin, but a big stress (I seem to be fraught with those) made me just stop eating much and the weight fell off too much, too fast. Don't be afraid to go to your doctor. You really need to find out what is doing this in such a short period of time. Yeah, eating too much or badly will be part of the problem, but it sounds like something else is going on too.

Eyebrow loss is called madarosis.
Madarosis can be an isolated problem or part of generalized hairloss.
Loss of eyebrows has numerous causes including primary skin problems, endocrine problems, autoimmune conditions, infections, tumors, trauma, and genetic diseases.
Since there is weight gain and skin marks, Cushing syndrome has to be ruled out.
Thyroid fuction should also be evaluated
