I'm not on the pill I'm on estrogel/prometrium. I was quoting Dr. Redmond about the BCPs. In his book he says to take the pill nonstop (especially if there are problems with estrogen withdrawal)..so discard the 7 days of placebos and just start the new pack. I believe you do that for 4-5 months and then have a period. I'll read the book again to see the exact instructions if you want.

Question for Delilah |
Delilah,
What is estrogel/prometrium? Would Yasmin be a candidate to take continuously to avoid periods? I have noticed since starting back up on it, my hair loss is worse? Is this normal? I am losing a lot of long hairs and it is really freakin' me out.
Thanks,
Kim

Hi Kim,
Are you premenopausal? I'm confused bc I thought you said that you were on Vivelle. Estrogel is Estradiol gel and Prometrium is a natural form of progesterone.

I read it and basically what he says is you really don't have to stop until you want to have a baby. He's basically saying there's no need for you to hae a period unless you feel uncomfortable not having one. So you take on pack for 21 days, discard the placebos and just start a fresh pack with no breaks in the pill.

Question for Delilah |
Yes, I'm 37, so I assume I am premenopausal? I'm wondering if I am sensitive to hormonal fluctuations if I would be better off avoiding a period with the Yasmin? Also, is it normal for the hair loss to be worse at first? I'm losing long hairs right now? What does that mean?
Also, could all this just be from stress?? I can't seem to avoid it!
Thanks,
Kim

Question for Delilah |
Hi Kim,
Im not Delilah but I wanted to say that the first hairs I lost last June were all long ones from the very back of my part. My hair is shoulder length and has been for several years. All the ones in the back were the first to come out. I didnt lose shorter ones for about 2-3 months. Now that I have been on treatment it almost seems like its going back to the long ones again. I do have regrowth and in the back of the part too. Stress, I doubt it as I was very stressed at the time my estrogen dipped and the T issue came into play. I do belive it started with the estrogen dropping in perimenopause that caused all this to happen for me.

He told me to take the pill 9 weeks straight, then 4 days off to induce a period...so 3 packs and skip the placebo week because the dip every month in estrogen is not good for hair.

Question for Delilah |
Mauri,
I was losing long hairs at first, too, and then I lost a bunch of short ones and now I'm losing long ones again? It sounds like we have that in common. What are you doing for treatment that is giving you regrowth? I really think that my drop in estrogen from coming off the Yasmin precipitated my loss, so I'm hoping being back on it may help even things out, but I'm also wondering if taking it continuously will help even more?
Is your loss very noticeable? Mine is to me, but supposedly not to others. I have lost at least half my volume and my part is widening and extending itself down the back of my head. The back of my head is very thin and I can feel my scalp when I lay on my pillow.

My loss began when my period became irregular the first time ever at age 49. I did get a few hot flashes but very few. Then 6 months later, hair started falling out. First in the back and then working its way up. I went to Dr. Redmond in Sept. and only began the estrogen (vivelle dot) Hair got worse come December so I started the meds. I flew back to see him Feb. 1st and he up'd the doses. My head had flakes all over it and was oily.
200mg spiro
5mg finasteride
.075mg levoxly thyoid (which I do believe has helped with growth because my fingernails are growing like weeds.]
.1mg HRT + prometrium days 1-12 of the month.
I noticed a difference in oil and flakes within 10 days but have just noticed the growth about the past 2-3 weeks. My shed dropped from 190+ to less than 100. Its been as low as 58 but goes up and down the past 3 weeks. Im hoping after a 4 month period of the meds it will get much less. I cant complain and I feel good. I may have to up the thyroid once more after TSH test in a couple of months. My TSH was 4.0 which was quite a bit more than it had been all my life. Dr. Redmond likes it between 1-2. Im for that if it makes me feel better and my hair grow, however he does say that my low a number does not cause any hairloss but is better for you in the long run to get it where it should be. Thats what Im doing. I searched all over Houston and never could get anyone to believe I was losing hair because of lowering of estrogen perimenopause. Forget the gyno's as they will tell you to use rogaine which I never did. My pair hasnt widened so much but it did start comnig off toward the back and down. I do have some new hairs there but still not as much as I did by any means. HOpe this helps.

Mauri,
My head is not oily at all and I've never seen flakes? It's just very itchy and sensitive to the touch? It seems worse when the loss is high like right now? I try not to count how much I lose, but if I had to guess, I would say it is about 200 strands a day right now. I lose a ton in the shower and whenever I run my fingers through my hair, I come out with 2-4 strands at a time. I have accumulated a pile on the side of my computer desk. I can't seem to leave my hair alone and I know this is probably not a good thing. I am constantly running my hands through it and then I get upset when I see the strands. It drives my husband absolutely nuts when I do this, but I can't help it.
Do you notice any of the hairs you lose seem to be new hairs? I have been noticing alot of them lately and it is making me nervous. You can tell they have never been cut? If I don't find an answer to this soon, I just don't know what I will do. It has taken over my life and left me unable to fully take care of my family the way they need. I am constantly sad and on the computer searching for answers. I can't relax and play with my son cuz my brain is focused on only one thing.
I bought Rogaine and it sat in my closet for 2 months, then the last endo told me to use it for 2 weeks and stop for 2 weeks. I made it 3 days and quit. I hate how it makes my hair feel and I'm so afraid it will make more hair fall out like I've read about it. I just don't how it makes me feel about myself to use it?
Thank you for your replies.
Kim
