Though many are reporting this side effect, the product monograph does not mention about it.
The half life of avodart is 5 weeks.

Many male users have indeed reported dryness of the skin after using Avodart. You can do a search in the men's forum and you can see plenty of posts about that. I suspect reducing the production of DHT does affect sebum and oil production on our face. Perhaps HairSite Admin can locate some articles or discussions about 5 alpha reductase inhibitor and its effect of sebum production.

Avodart's half life is very long, meaning the medication stays in your system for a long time. I don't think it will make any difference even if you are to use Avodart just 2-3 times a week. The concentration of the drug will remain at more or less the SAME level throughout the week given it's long half life.
In comparison, Propecia or finasteride's half life is only about 6 hours. Have you tried Propecia or finasteride? Perhaps it may make a difference.
Also, why did you decide to try Avodart instead of Propecia (finasteride) in the first place?
With all that being said, I just posted a couple of articles which suggest that 5 alpha reductase inhibitors such as Propecia and possibly Avodart may not work that well in women. Just something that you should keep in mind.

BTW, a possible alternative is to use Finasteride or Avodart topically, here's one study by Dr. Klein on topical finasteride.

There are people in the men's forum who use topical Avodart too. They simply puncture the gel cap and apply the gel directly onto their scalp. Reviews are mixed at this point.

topical spiro |
I found this article on topical spiro.
Topical spironolactone inhibits dihydrotestosterone receptors in human sebaceous glands: an autoradiographic study in subjects with acne vulgaris.
Berardesca E, Gabba P, Ucci G, Borroni G, Rabbiosi G.
Department of Dermatology, University of Pavia, Italy.
The interaction between spironolactone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) receptors was evaluated with an autoradiographic technique. The inhibition of DHT receptors by spironolactone was found to be related to the decrease of tritiated DHT granules in the sebaceous glands of the treated site. 6 male patients affected by acne vulgaris entered the study. The acute study was performed by applying to 25 cm2 of the back a cream containing 5% spironolactone under occlusive dressing. The dosage of spironolactone applied was 4 mg/cm2 for 48 h. The long-term study was performed by applying the same amount to the entire back, without occlusion, twice daily for 1 month. Skin biopsies were taken at the end of the treatment, incubated with tritiated DHT and processed for autoradiography. Both the acute and the long-term study revealed a decrease of the autoradiographic granules in the treated site. This effect is related to the binding of spironolactone with dihydrotestosterone receptors in the sebaceous glands.
Our study demonstrates that 5% topical spironolactone cream acts as an antiandrogen in human sebaceous glands, competing with DHT receptors and producing a decrease of labelled DHT. At the concentrations used the effect has been only local. No side-effects were recorded during both studies.

I don't understand the logic. You said you decided to try Avodart because of the crown. Are you telling me that someone told you Avodart can regrow your crown?
Have you tried Propecia or Finasteride before you started using Avodart?
Avodart is a DUAL 5-alpha reductase, it inhibits both type I and type II 5-alpha reductase, it's probably overkill for female hair loss. Also, I do not know of that many doctors who recommend Avodart for women hair loss. I do not recall seeing that many studies that involve Avodart and female hair loss.
With that all being said, I also posted some conflicting studies about the efficacy of anti-androgens (eg: spiro) and 5AR inhibitors (eg: finasteride or avodart). It does not necessarily work for all types of female hair loss or AGA in women.

Nice...are you sure it isn't the Spiro that's drying you out? When I started (200mg/day) the first thing I noticed was my very oily face got much, much better. Fewer blackheads, smaller pores. My scalp got less greasy too. I've always had oily hair/face and the spiro really changed that for me.
Just a thought.
