Prometrium (Birth Control Pills & Hair Loss)

My doc perscribed this to me to help with my hormones. Can anyone tell me about it? What to expect? My hair is OK..better than it was but still not the way it used to be. I'm having a ton of peri symptoms right now. She thinks this will help. Anyone been on it??

Thanks!

Prometrium

Hi Rae,
Does your doc think that the Prometrium will just help with your peri symptoms or does he/she think it will also help your hair? I need to look into this med more myself but most of all I need to know if it will cause a dread shed. I'm paranoid of dread sheds!

Prometrium To Chris

Hi Chris..

She thinks it will help with everything. Inluding hair. Even though my hair has improved somewhat..it's still not the way it used to be. I've just got so many crazy peri symptoms right now. Two periods a month! I need some help. She suggested this to start. I told her the pill didn't make me feel right. I'm using P cream and this. We will see..I guess.

It's debatable if it will help your hair but may help to balance out your hormones. I'm not sure taking it alone without the right amount of estrogen will help much but it's certainly not going to cause a dread shed. You have nothing to loose.

Delilah...

Does Prometrium taken alone affect your testosterone levels? I'm starting it this weekend. I'm also on P cream. It's good to know that it won't cause a major shed.

I doubt it. I've never taken it alone only with E, but I believe nomoresheds takes it alone and is doing well. It's a plant based P..peanuts I believe and it's types of synthetic P that can cause problems.

» Hey Rae,

I saw earlier postings about you going on Ovcon 35. Did you stay on that? If yes, how is it working for you? If not, why?

I am picking up my prescription for Ovcon 35 tomorrow and I'm SOOOO nervous because I've never responded well to any bcps. BUT, I'm low in estrogen and progesterone, and my hair is falling out, so I'm hoping that Ovcon might do the trick. Any thoughts?

Prometrium questions

I am probably the only one on the board who uses it alone. Don't use progestin or synthetic progesterone, use the peanut based prometrium as delilah said. It is supposedly safer if you can tolerate peanut oil.

I would recommend to the person who is having trouble with bcps, try the prometrium alone and see if it helps. I have low E and non existent progesterone and the progesterone alone helped me quite a bit. I don't want to add estrogen right now so I am just seeing if things continue. You can get a compounding pharmacy to make a prometrium cream also...I may try this myself. My hair is much better but I still shed, just not a lot.

I still have a lot of peri symptoms and when I get a period it does seem to termporarily increase my shed, but not by a lot.

To tell you the truth, I have slowed down in taking the prometrium nightly. I forget a lot of the time or am too tired to be bothered.

Prometrium questions

Regarding peanut oil allergy, it is only rarely reported. Moreover if the peanut oil is highly refined, then the chances of allergy is less.
