Seasonal Sheds (Androgenetic Alopcia (AGA) Female Pattern) |
Does anyone know? This exact time last year my hair was shedding like crazy. I attributed it to just dying my hair. Now, it seems I'm going through some shedding. Is this a summer thing? Anyone know? I just find it interesting that I had this the same time last year. It's not alarming, just more than usual.
Thanks!

Hi Rae,
For the last 4 summers, my shed has increased tremendously. In the Spring it starts and then increases as Summer goes along. I didn't finally realize that it seems to be a seasonal thing until this year. In the past Springs/Summers I had changed routines for my hair, started/stopped Rogaine, etc. so I just thought it was the changes I had been making. But this year I didn't change a thing about my hair routine and sure enough it started to increase and I'm shedding more than 200 hairs after showering. I have regrowth everywhere and always do but the shed is so big the new hairs can't keep up. I have so little hair left and now I can't wait for Fall because I know my shedding will go back down. Summer WAS my favorite time of year.

I was watching Oprah the other day (rerun) And a lady asked why in the summer does she get so sexual aroused? The Dr. on there said that the sun can increase Testosterone and cause more sexual cravings. Maybe that being said, your testosterone is being shot up at the moment which equals more hair shedding. I hope I made sence?????

Although I've never heard that testosterone goes up in the summer, it may be true. However, I don't think that's the case for me. My shed starts in the Spring. I live in Michigan and we've had a colder and rainier Spring/Summer than usual. Not very much sunshine at all.

It's probably coincidental and you just notice it more in Spring/Summer. It could also be that you have on sleeveless tops and feel the loose hairs more. Unless who knows your body is geared to go into some kind of hormonal shed every spring, but since you've both been shedding for years it's hard to say why it would be more in summer.

Unfortunately, I got in the bad habit of counting hairs. In the Fall/Winter I lose around 10-20 hairs after washing. In the Spring it goes up to 30-50. Now Summer, I'm at 200+. Don't know what the hell it means.

Hmmmm that's pretty dramatic difference at what point does the 200 usually stop?

It usually subsides around October. So, yeah, with this going on the 4th year of this crap I don't have a whole lot of hair left.

Chris, I live in Michigan too, my shed really picked up strong after being in the hot sun last week. The humidity made my seb derm act up really bad, and I am shedding like a cat right now. My scalp is full of flakes and itchiness. Which I don't get, because they say the seb derm gets better in the summer.

Hi taz,
We should get together some time!
I seriously don't think humidity has anything to do with increased shedding. I lived in Housyon for 7 years and never had shedding or hl. You can't get much more humid than Houston!

I think it's a seasonal mid-summer thing. I'm shedding a lot right now and I've got some flakes and my scalp is itchy. I've done nothing to my hair at all. I just think this is a seasonal thing or a hormone spike or decrease or something.
I remember when all of this HL stuff started for me my scalp was very oily. Now, it's not like that. I also do not wash my hair everyday and I think that helped. I think the oily stuff was caused by hormones and now they have evened out a bit.

I had finally got my shed to slow down in April and May by eating a lot of red meat. Unfortunately, since June my shed has increased again. So sad - Will this ever end? But I wonder if it is a seasonal thing? I also had root canal and a bad infection and was on antibiotics for a few weeks. I hope it is a seasonal thing and my shed slows down again - I was so happy.
Take Care Megan
