much appreciated

anyone pre-meno and supplementing with estrogen ?

Hi there,

I've been taking bio-identical estrogen to treat low levels of estrogen because of a pituitary gland and thyroid disorder. I should also be taking progesterone because I'm deficient in that as well, and it needs to be present to "oppose" or balance the estrogen and prevent a higher likelihood of cancer cell growth. BUT, I've been taking such a small dose and have not had any ill-effects....until now. I have the feeling that the bio-identical cream estrogen that I've been taking has gone bad or mutated in some way. Because now when I rub a little pea-size drop on a fatty area of my body, my skin breaks out on my face for days afterwards. When I don't put the estrogen on-- no breakouts. BUT, my hair falls out when I don't take the estrogen. So it seems to be a catch-22. I need to talk to my doctor about the possibility of the estrogen cream "turning". I am also just considering going on the pill to balance my hormones. Unfortunately Yasmin, Ortho-TriCyclin, and Lo-Estrin all made my hair fall out. So I'm hoping that something with a medium amount of estrogen and a low-dose of progesterone will do the trick. I've done some research and it seems like an older pill called Ovcon 35 might work. BTW, I'm 41 and perimenopausal.

Hope this helps! BTW, if anyone has any input or suggestions, I'm all ears! Thanks!

Hi,
I would definitely talk to your doc about breaking out with the cream.
How long have you been experiencing hairloss? From your post, you have been on 3 different types of bcp. How long were you on each one? Maybe you didn't give them enough time to get your hormones leveled out. I'm looking at bcp as a last resort to helping my hl. I just turned 47 last week and have had some peri symptoms. I've only been on Yasmin for 6 weeks and therefore still waiting to see if it does my hair any goood. Fingers crossed!!!

I don't quite remember the durations for each of the pills. I think I was on Loestrin for about a year before I finally realized it was what was making my hair fall out. After that, I swore off BCPs. But then a year or two later my periods were getting so bad that I went on Yasmin. I think I only stuck that out for three months because I immediately noticed my hair falling out and just wasn't willing to go through that again. The same goes for the Ortho-TriCyclen.

I know they say you're supposed to give your body time to adjust to the pill, but I just don't have that kind of patience! If my crowning glory is laying all over the floor and I know what's doing it-- then I'm going to stop doing it!!

However, now because of the pituitary and thyroid issue my hair is falling out anyway. It started last November. But once I started taking Amour thyroid it stopped-- for awhile. Every couple of months I start a big shed again and my endocrinologist suggests that it could be because of low sex hormones. Hence her suggestion to take BCPs. I picked up my first packet of Ovcon35 yesterday...still haven't taken it though! I'm being a bit of a chicken. I'm not a big fan of synthetic hormones, and I'm also worried about how I'll react. BUT....I'll never know unless I try it, right?

Hi there,
I completely understand your fear for starting back up on the pill.
My understanding is that Loestrin is one of the worst pills for hair. The change in your periods could be due to fluctuating hormones and your hair may have been shedding because of that. It probably would have taken 3-4 months for your hormones to calm down with the Yasmin. Maybe at 4 months you would have seen improvement. Ortho-Cyclen is supposed to be good for hair and better than Ortho Tri-Cyclen. But what do I know? I'm trying to figure this all out by myself since no derm, endo, or ob/gyn has any clue what's going on with me. I'm not trying to convince you to start birth control. I guess I'm just hoping so badly for myself that it solves my hl problem.
Good luck to you!

Are you in perimenopause? If so, you may be able to get bioidenticals if you have symptoms in addition to hair loss. I use progesterone and have had good luck with it. I do believe that the spikes in hormones are what causes the hair loss for some people. THe bcps will even that out, that is why doctor's like it.

I have seen people with good results taking armour.

I don't know your age but if you are in your 40s, you will probably wind up tweaking whatever you chose to use as you age. I suspect it is easier to find some stability once you are menopausal.
