Topical Estrogen - anyone, hairsite? (Androgenetic Alopcia (AGA) Female Pattern)

I posted about topical Progesterone last month, and now i'd like to know if any of you ladies pre/post menopause have used topical estrogen to any success?

Also, does anyone think/know if it would be advisable in females in their early 30's who have no hormonal fluctuations but visible thinning on top?

Many thanks,
Sadie x

Estrogens and Human Scalp Hair Growth—Still More Questions than Answers

Journal of Investigative Dermatology (2004) 122, 840–842

For human scalp hair, topical E2 has long been used in the management of telogen effluvium and androgenetic alopecia, especially in women (Wüstner and Orfanos, 1974;Schuhmacher-Stock, 1981;Sterry and Paus, 2000). Even though this remains to be unequivocally proven in vivo, it is felt that E2 inhibits hair shaft formation, thus lowering the rate of hair growth, i.e., how much new hair shaft is generated by the anagen hair bulb per time unit, yet prolongs anagen duration, thus decreasing the telogen rate (Schuhmacher-Stock, 1981;Sinclair et al, 1999).

This would help to explain the clinical observation that topical E2 or high systemic E2 levels during estrogen-based contraception and during pregnancy increase the telogen/anagen ratio, thus notably improving a pre-existing telogen effluvium, while causing a telogen effluvium postpartum supposedly due to E2 withdrawal (Lynfield, 1960;Barman et al, 1969;Ebling et al, 1991). In view of the very complex, multiple concomitant endocrine changes during and after pregnancy and lactation (including, e.g., dramatic fluctuations in gestagen and prolactin levels (Braunstein, 2003)), it is however exceedingly difficult to dissociate strictly E2-based hair growth effects from those that other hormones might exert on the human scalp hair follicle in vivo during this time...............................................

Thanks Hairsite - another question pls?!

Thanks for the reply Hairsite, but may i ask, what is E2? Is it a specific type of Estrogen?

It does appear to be a bit exciting - that topical E improves hair esp given it helps during pregnancy.

What do you think if someone has used CA (dianette) which has estrogen and this has worsened the hair...then should they try topical E? This is my situation.

I also keep reading the whole thing about pregnancy and increased E levels and thick hair!

Hair thinning began in 2003. Started Regaine 2% around 2005 - quit after 11 months of NO improvement. Started BCP Sept 07. Quit after 3 months of RAPID thinning. Strarted Regaine 5% August 07. Quit (or rather reduced) the applications start of last week.

Also tried: Saw Palmetto, Neetas Herbal (asian stuff), Asian hair oils, Emu Oil, Nourkrin, Iron/Zinc/Fish oils etc.

Spiro is an anti-androgen...so for me it seems like a terrible option given my BCP experience.

Propecia isnt good for women of child bearing age, so i hear.

Avodart i've never heard of. I dont know if it is a UK thing or not.

I'm thinning too Nice. Sucks huh! x

Sadie,
there are some other options any maybe one of them will work for you.
I am still trying to get something to work for me, too as I am still thining AND shedding . It sucks !!!

Spiro is a testosterone blocker, acts some other way than the cyproterone acetate from Diane. All the antiandrogen pills are different, you have to try to see is another one works for you, it's not that if one didn't, none would.

Propecia is not good if you want to get pregnant in the NEAR future, you have to make a 6 months pause of if before you start ttc.

Bunnyheather is taking it. Avodart is dutasterid.

E2 is one of the types of estrogen. It is also called as estradiol.

Thanks hairsite, but if Estradiol made my hair worse (dianette), then do you think topical Estrogen like E2 is just going to be as bad for the hair???

My doctor, a german professor in dermatology gave me 17 beta estradiol lotion 2 years ago. I have to apply it on my hair. It don't think it helped very much, but I still use it 4 times a week.
He had very good results with the topical estradiol. 10% of it enters the bloodstream. My hair loss stopped when my ferritine was up.

Same here I used topical estrogen but it didn't work. Only thing that has ever worked for me is increasing ferritin, zinc and protein.

Good Luck
