change in hair loss (Androgenetic Alopcia (AGA) Female Pattern)

Dear women,
I am so glad to find this site, I have been so upset for years and lately the hair loss has accelerated, I now have see through hair on the top of my head and I am freaked out. I am 57 and went through menopause early. I have always felt that I would lose my hair as my paternal grandmother and one paternal aunt and one paternal cousin have aga. No one talks about it and all the older relatives are deceased.
My question is do you think anything really helps, it feels like it is hormonal to me, I have had a resurgence of hot flashes and weight gain and depression lately and I went through all of this over 10 years ago.
I would love to hear any advice, I do not use any meds except thryroid and am wary of taking meds but will if they will stop the hair loss.
Thanks,
freaked out

I am almost 56; my hair started thinning 1 year ago and suddenly my scalp showed clearly. the hair on the crown became shortened and very thin. My formerly curly hair became course and straight. I also freaked out, as it was gradual. I really wasn't aware of how severe the hair los was until I saw pictures of myself on vacation. I went to see Dr. Michael Reed in April- I have been on 5 mg of finasteride and a nightly scalp lotion. My friends have noticed that I look better- He did say that it would take 6-9 mos to notice improvement. I use Nioxin #4 shampoo & conditioner for "noticeably thinning" hair. The hair loss varies- some days just a few, others a lot. I shed when washing my hair and if I run my hand acroos my scalp. I don't really notice hair on the pillow or clothing. That's my tale...I just hope it works!
