TE recovery?? (Telogen Effluvium)

Hey All

I have been suffering from TE for the past 6 months now..I just want the shedding to stop..I think I have lost about 70% of my hair but I never knew why it started, I wasn't on birth control pills, my blood tests came back fine the only thing my doctor said was because I had done overseas travel perhaps the change in diet or water affected my hair. Anyways, about 3 months ago I noticed the fine fringe of new hair along my scalp line. Now the hairs are getting longer and I can see fine hairs growing in all the time. My questions are as follows..since I am seeing regrowth does that mean my shedding and TE will stop soon? Because I am still shedding but since my hair is regrowing does that mean whatever caused it to start is no longer a trigger? And these new hairs that are coming in are finer than my normal hair..will they thicken up over time or is this the new consistency of my hair? And my head is also really itchy..especially the crown of my head..is that normal? Anyways those are all my questions and thanks in advance for all your help!!

TE recovery??

An itchy crown could be androgenetic hair loss. It's a symptom of too much testosterone or a high sensitivity to testosterone -- even if your blood tests come back as normal.

Also...TE can "herald" the start of androgenetic hair loss (I hate that phrase, but it's accurate). Once your hair has gotten into this shedding cycle, even if it was caused by TE, if you're predisposed to androgenetic hair loss, TE can kick start it.

Dr Redmond's book, The Hormonally Vulnerable Woman does a good job of explaining the different symptoms associated with the different causes of hair loss. It will answer a lot of your questions and help you make an informed plan of action. Don't wait. It rarely gets better by itself.

TE recovery??

You just described my hair perfectly - with the regrowth and all - except that I'm going on 13 months.

I've had other bouts of TE where the regrowth showed up before the shedding stopped.

I'm still waiting. Trying not to let it get me too down. Some days are easier than others.

Ugh! I have a tingly feeling (not itchy really) off and on.

I try to tell myself it regrowth. I'm really dreading the thought of continuing thinning -- it's not going to be remotely attractive with my pointy head!

But, really, I think (hope) it's associated with stress for me. Seems to signal another increase in the shedding, but it's so hard to know since there's a delay between the trigger and when the shedding starts.

So Topaz...you have seen the regrowth..did your hair get back to normal?? did it stop falling out? I have started washing my hair twice a week now and I think I am noticing less shedding but what makes me think it hasn't healed yet is each time I run my fingers through my hair I get strands...even if I do it like 5 times each 5 times I get hair so I think its still falling out but what really annoys me is I have no hair pretty much on the sides of my head so there is no way to style my hair I have to put it up all the time. So Topaz did your hair get back to normal? Did you get back how much hair you had before? I just want it to stop shedding and my hair to come back :S

TE recovery??

Yes, I'm still seeing regrowth. When I pull my hair back I see lots of hairs stick up. They're 1-3 cm long. Seems like they're getting longer. Hard to say whether it's getting back to normal or as much hair as I had before this whole mess started.

But, my hair feels much less frizzy and fragile and seems easier to style. I'm excited about the texture change. The shedding is down, but not as low as I remember. I think I noticed regrowth before the shedding started to drop. There's still one frizzy patch, so I figure that has to fall out before I'm done with this.

At one point, I stopped brushing my hair altogether. Then I saw even more shedding. I figured that made sense since none of it was ending up in my brush. Anyway, now when I run my fingers through, I still pull hairs. But, it's fewer and sometimes I get NONE (that's very exciting). So, changing your styling can affect the hairs you see come out.

For me the shed is due to day-to-day stress. Very lame considering my life isn't that hard. But I get so wound up and then it just seems to feed on itself. I've been working very hard to manage the stress (diet, exercise) and keep things in perspective. I get a extra help with SSRIs during PMS time. I haven't really spun out of control in a couple months and that seems to coincide with the regrowth.

The changes are subtle and slow. Have you figured out what your trigger is and tried to address that?

TE recovery??

Here is my hair loss story; it is long:

I am 27 years old, and about 6 months ago, I was suffering terribly from hair loss. I was on Yasmin for 5 1/2 years, and stopped taking it to get pregnant. 5 months later, my hair started falling out in giant amounts. It fell out all over my head, all day long, wash or not, brush or not, ponytail or not, constantly. I would say I lost 1000 or more hairs a day for 5 weeks. My ponytail was about as thick as a quarter, not a silver dollar anymore - you get the picture. I probably lost 60% of my hair during that time. It was totally devastating. I was at a loss for an explanation.

I went to a dermatologist. I still think it is from Yasmin discontinuation, but he seemed to think it was from having the flu 2 1/2 months before the hair loss started and having a temp of 103 for 2 days. That can definitely kill hair growth temporarily. I think it took a long time for the pills' hormones to get out of my body, and maybe that explains it. Also, I had bloodwork done, and my thyroid was fine (definitely on the side of hypothyroid if anything, not the hair loss-capable hypERthyriod). My hormone levels were fine, and all that.

I know how devastating this is. I went to the dermatologist, a regular internist doctor, and a naturopath. The naturopath gave me some B-12 vitamins, thyroid herbs, a yeast intibitor, and told me to go on a gluten free diet. All I can say is that when I went to the dermatologist, he told me that I should be losing hair for about 2-3 months, lose about 75% of it, my follicles were fine and not damaged, and it will grow back. I think with the help of the naturopath, the herbs, and the gluten-free diet, I only lost 50-60% of my hair for 5 weeks, not 3 months.

I also started taking a very high dose of natural vegetarian Biotin (5mg, I think, like 20x whatever is daily reccomended), and using Jason Naturals brand Biotin hair shampoo and conditioner. It is like only $8 per bottle of each from the health food store, and it made my scalp feel great immediately. I don't know for sure, but I am willing to bet it helped a little - not with the hair loss (the telogen effluvium spontaneous kind that I had), but with the regrowth.

I am happy to say that 6 months later, I now have what I consider a great head of hair. My hair was always thick and plentuful, and for about a month, it looked like I was sick and balding. I was embarrased to go out. It was not that the hair was thin or thinning, but that it was just dissapearing altogether. Not a month after it stopped falling out (which happened spontaneously the same way it started), I had about 10,000 hairs on my head that were about 1/2 inch long. So frizzy and sticking up they were, but the balding effect was gone - thank god.

I am not a vain person, but I have always loved my hair, and I know how devastating this is for women and young women especially. PLEASE believe me. If telogen effluvium is what you have (all of a sudden type of hair loss), especially after an event (birth control discontinuation, sickness, surgery, death, stress, postpartum, flu, injury, etc.), please believe me. I cried every night and day, and even thought I was going to have to get a wig!

It did stop for me after taking some action with natural remedies. I know it would have stopped ANYWAY, but I wanted to quicken that process. I was SO upset by the whole thing, and I know how upset you are. IT WILL STOP and you will have your hair back. PLEASE DON'T STRESS (impossible, I know). No amount of avoiding hair wash, brush, pillows, will do anything to help you, so don't be going around with greasy knotty hair. That is not going to help you at all. It will just make you even more self-concsious.

Best of luck. I wish I could help more, but just know from one female hair-lover to another, it WILL be okay, and your hair will come back. Within 2 months, your scalp will look fine and unnoticable of the whole event, and within 8-9 months, your ponytail will be thick again. IT WILL BE OKAY!
