It Stopped Working (Hair & Scalp Odor Problem) |
Wow, it's been awhile since I was on here!
Any who, just wanted to inform everyone that my "cure" (rotating between JASON and Selsun) has stopped working. After a day of using either products, the smell comes back. I have also been experiencing that nasty tar stuff again. I don't know what happened!
It's been awhile since the odor came back, I just never got the chance to post on here. I'm so mad and depressed. I had such high hopes and this happens. Currently, I don't smell it so much, but it's there. When I pressed my fingers to my scalp, I can smell a hint of that tar smell.
I've tried waiting a bit longer before rinsing and using Head&Shoulders conditioner instead of the Giovanni one, but it doesn't help much. I'm not sure if it's JASON or Selsun that's creating the tar smell because every time I wash with either one, I get that smell.
SO, I don't know what to do. I don't know what I should try next w/o spending so much cash. What makes this all worse is that the weather has been getting warmer and when I'm outside during P.E., the odor is pretty strong because I'm sweating and whatnot.
Any new/old product suggestions are welcome.
-Just went through the board again and found that alcohol is something else that works. I'm willing to try, it's just that I'm afraid of what it'll do to my hair. . How exactly would you put the stuff into your hair/on your scalp? Do you rinse it out after wards?

wow......great hearing from u! |
Yeah, I know. I was surprised to see recent posts between you and other users when I came back to check the forum out. Summer and school have been keeping me away from here and the fact that I don't have much to contribute anymore. It seems we've provided all the information a new person dealing with scalp odor would need. Since I never HAD scalp odor to begin with, no new products or news will be coming from me. My only remedy is to wash my hair well everyday. No need to purchase special shampoos anymore.
Well, ever since getting back into Etsy, I decided to search for shampoo/acne creams/stretch mark stuff (my new horror) and that's why I suggested it on my post up there since everyone here seems to be into organic products. The fact that it's all made by hand at home is just plain awesome! And they are pretty affordable I must say. They've got everything from bar soaps, chapstick, organic make up, etc. Etsy is like heaven. xD
So yeahh. I probably won't be on here much unless someone's got a question!

Hey everyone! |
Hey all, just wanted to update to show everyone I'm still alive.
So, to seriously clear some stuff up, I don't think I 100% had a scalp odor now that I think about it. Everyone on this board claimed their scalp smelled yeasty and like a "wet dog" or whatever. But mines never smelled like any of that. I probably just got paranoid and assumed I had what you guys had. In the end, I believe it was all due to the lack of shampooing good when I was younger which led to my oily scalp smell that I could not get rid of as I got older.
Pressing my fingers to my scalp, I can see oil on my finger tips and it smells like a normal oily scalp. I've been using good smelling shampoos lately and so my hair kinda covers up the oily scent.
As for the JASON shampoo, I used it recently, and it was a BIG FAT MISTAKE. The smell was so overpowering, it gave me a slight headache and the next day, it made my hair smell burnt and tar-like all over again. Oh goodness it was horrible. The smell lasted days after days as I tried all the shampoo my house had to get rid of the smell. I also made another mistake by using Selsun Blue because it caused almost the same burnt smell. I don't get why these two shampoos caused this mess for my hair! I don't know what to do with them anymore. I have a lot of JASON shampoo left and I'm never going to touch it again. I'll give my Selsun to my grandma to use, though.
Help me get rid of JASON, por favor?
Anyway, yes, I do believe I have a normal very oily scalp. It gets oily after a day of washing my hair, that's how quick it is. It's really not that bad if I consistently wash my hair. But I DO plan on getting some of that extra virgin coconut oil still.
BY THE WAY, I have found that Etsy.com is a good place to look for vegan shampoos and other bodily products. They are handmade and most of the products I have seen contains no chemicals at all. I suggest everyone to check it out!! Just go up to the search box and type in whatever you're looking for and make sure the drop down list to the left is on handmade or it could be on all items, whichever you guys prefer.
Please tell me what you've discovered on etsy and if you're planning to buy a product!

I have not been on this board regularly since I have stopped having this problem. I found that my problem--everyone's is different--was that my body couldn't tolerate artificial hormones. I was on birth control hormones via the NuvaRing. Since it's considered safe for most people, I didn't suspect it at first, and it took a long time for my body to eliminate it completely. Now I'm OK. I can use any shampoo I want. I just need to stay away from artificial hormones.
When I was having this problem, my favorite product was Home Health Everclean Anti-Dandruff Shampoo. Neutrogena T/Sal seemed to work OK for a while, too. Both have salicylic acid in the ingredients which helps with bacteria.
http://www.naturecoop.com/Home-Health-Everclean-Dandruff-Shampoo-LIQ-8oz.html
http://www.amazon.com/Neutrogena-Shampoo-Scalp-Build-up-Control/dp/B000052XZX
I posted links for descriptions of the two products. Mostly, though, it seemed like I was so shell-shocked by the experience, the slightest hint of a scent would alarm me. I don't think others were as bothered by the smells as I was. Many people didn't even notice. I think some people just have sharper senses of smell than others, and that's why some notice, and others don't.
Check with people whom you trust if you do smell unusual. If it really isn't psychological, you have already tried several products. It might be time to check with a doctor, but I'd recommend an endocrinologist. They understand that many smells are due to hormones. Good luck!

Thanks krystalyna!
The coconut oil does have many uses. I use it in the morning as a toast spread and it is sooooo yummy! I am not brave enough to eat 2 T / day yet. But I occasionally use it to make eggs in the morning. I'm sure it is not bad for us to eat. Just a little afraid to make my cholesterol skyrocket if I get too ambitious...
It makes a great deodorant too! I've been using it for dry skin and deodorant, as I gave up using deod. over a year ago.
I intend to get the neem oil, just haven't yet. I'm determined to smell it if nothing else!

@ fari, I'm so sorry you didn't pass! Next time!
@ Betsy, I feel so bad for your mother...I wish I could help!
Neem oil scares me! I think I will be able to purchase some extra virgin coconut oil sometime this weekend if I don't have any plans. I'm looking forward to it. I told my sister about it and she thought it was bad for your body! In the article link up there, it talks about how the U.S. thinks coconut oil isn't good or whatever. Geez, the U.S./scientists are trying to trick us.
I hope it works out though...if it doesn't work, I'll still keep it so I can put it to use for other alternatives. I like products that can be used for many different things.

far, I guess you are forcing me to try the neem oil! I must admit you have made me curious to smell the stuff. Wonder if I can find it locally? I shall try this first.
My scalp had felt rather sensitive the past couple of weeks so I have been using the Jason Dandruff every couple of days. This seems to have taken care of the problem but I will continue to use it for another time or two. Then I'll go back to using the Jojoba shampoo.
I'm thrilled you are doing so well.
Let me know how the test AND the treatment go.

Coconut oil |
Yes, the coconut oil information was very helpful. Also, I try eating as healthy as I can go, but my body can't do it! I always crave for sweets or junk food (maybe cause I'm still sixteen?). It's hard for me, but I'm not sure if it made a difference or not in the first place.
For me, those SLS shampoos never affected my scalp/skin. It just never work for my scalp odor. The only thing it does is make my hair smell nice.
I think the shampoos are starting to work again (thank goodness!). The tar smell is still around, but when I get my hands on those coconut/tea tree oils, it better go away! That's the only thing I smell now.

Coconut oil |
Thanks for the link on the coconut oil. I have started eating a bit every day and do believe it to be beneficial for numerous things. I intend to put it on my scalp later this week.
As to the SLS in shampoos...I have eradicated them from my arsenol of shampoos, dish liquids, etc...I do believe the ingredient is too harsh for my skin and scalp. Hopefully soap and shampoo manufacturers will catch onto the trend and find alternative surfactants.
So thankful for this board!

JUST A THOUGHT..... I know we are all focusing on JD Shampoo, Neem Oil, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil & Tea Tree Oil BUT I was just wondering... on the front of the JD Shampoo it says that its "Lauryl and Laureth Sulphate free", SO could this be the answer? To buy a Shampoo that DOESN'T contain these ingredients? I've noticed that Boots do an "own brand" anti dandruff shampoo that doesn't have these ingredients listed and just thought "hum I wonder"? Am I behind the times with this thought...? Got to say though the JD Shampoo is still doing the do for me, even did a shampoo in the week with Vosene and was fine for 3 days, then used the JD again as I didn't want to push my luck! Just a little panicked at the post that its stopped working for someone, hope it NEVER stops working for me until we find a cure!

Coconut oil |
Just came across this in our archives:
Excerpt - "People from various cultures, religions and races have used coconut for its medicinal uses. India’s Ayurvedic medicine has long recognized the healing properties of coconut oil for over 4,000 years. The oil is valued for its antimicrobial properties. It is an ingredient in preparations believed to promote luxurious hair growth. Dried coconut is even used to expel parasites and improve digestion. In the Philippines, coconut oil is used to speed the healing of burns, cuts and bruises."

Hm, maybe it is working? If it is, then the only thing I need to get rid of is that horrible tar smell! But I will be on the look out for those extra virgin coconut oils. I'm searching it online (at the stores around here) and all I get is olive oil or something of the like.
Anyone here had success with tea tree oil?
@ fari, I really don't understand how the doctors never believed any of you, either. How could they think it was all in your head? I'm glad my doctor *sort of* understood. Someone around my area must have went to him with the same problem! I wonder if he/she found a solution.

Thank you fari, Mom is doing as well as can be expected...the memory is the problem now. I am leaving to spend the day with her as my Dad is out of town today.
I will pray you pass the driving test!
It is my opinion that the coconut oil may be a slightly antibacterial/antifungal help plus the odor plus it may help balance out the scalp oils...but I can't say from experience yet as I only used it once. I am intrigued by the neem oil but like you said, the smell is making me now look forward to using it! Do let us hear how it is working for you after you use it once again. I'm hitting the Jason Dandruff Shampoo hard right now, using it every time, as my scalp is feeling a bit sensitive although no smell! Thankful for that!

Hello Betsy
Thats what my husband said re the oily smell which is NORMAL as opposed to the yesty smell i USED to have. Im not fussed about the oily smell after a couple of days as i have smelt this on lots of people. My problem was the yeast foul order which was on my pillows in a morning and which i could smell when i was moving around!!! If all u can smell is an oily smell then i do agree with you Betsy that the shampoos have done the trick.
I'm going to apply the neem oil wednesday night as i have a driving test Wednesday morning and i wouldnt want to kill the driving Examniner with the neem oil smell if i did it before!(i can still smell a little after i have washed it a few times. You can also pray that i pass my test
I do think the neem oil did the trick for me so i will definately use it again. The Virgin coconut oil is really good as when u have washed it out ur scalp is left with a sweet coconuty smell.
Hpe ur mom is on the mend Betsy

The coconut oil brand isn't that important...the Extra Virgin Coconut Oil type may be. I will tell you that you will most likely find it in the vitamin area of the store, not the food section. At least at the stores I checked out it was. In the natural vitamin area. I found some at a Meijer store. A health food store will have it too.
When you talk about an oily greasy smell, I have found that most people have that smell after not washing for a day or two. It is maybe because we are using unscented shampoos although our scalps may be oilier than some. The smell we do not want to smell is the horrible, yeasty bacterial, foul smell. There is a difference. If you don't smell the foul odor, only the oily smell, the dandruff shampoos are working. With the oily smell, I think this may be where the coconut oil may help a bit. But I am not convinced it helped me much. I will have to try that a few more times before I decide if it helped the overproduction of oil.
When I had the yeasty bacterial problem, my husband could smell it. With the greasy smell, my husband says I smell normal.
Good luck!

Yes alcohol will work but only temporarily (it kills bacteria). I have tried pure alcohol and I have tried all alcohol - based surgical disinfectants, - they work but only for a short while, the smell comes back afterwards. You may want to have a small bottle with you in case of emergency - and spray your head with it, but I wouldnt suggest using it for longer periods cause ( as others mentioned) it will dry your hair and wont really get rid of the smell for good.

Yeah, I've been meaning to try out Sebulex for a long time. I can only purchase it online though or at a local pharmacy (where they'll have to order for me).

Tea tree oil is very inexpensive at your local health food store. I would consider applying a few drops of pure tea tree oil directly to the scalp and see if it makes any difference. Don't use tea tree oil shampoo, buy pure tea tree oil.

Well, mines smell...greasy and just scalpy. It's really hard to explain, especially to someone who doesn't have it. I can smell it and when I walk around, people behind me could probably smell it too, but I don't know. They don't come up to me saying my hair smells or anything. But I do smell it myself though and it's not cool!
Okay, I'm scared of the alcohol! I didn't do it yet, so thank goodness. I'll try finding the extra virgin coconut oil at the stores around here. There's bound to be at least one place that has it.
How do you guys go about using the oil in your hair? How long should I leave it on? Also, what brand is the product that you guys use?
Thanks!!

If you do get the coconut oil make sure it is the extra virgin, there is a difference. I have both and just the regular coconut oil has no smell and doesnt seem to work as well. I too am going to use the neem oil again when i dont have to work or go out for a few days. I am also going to add some to a regular shampoo as well. I would be careful with the alcohol, when i used it,it is only temporary and very very drying that my scalp peeled. I do find that my scalp is acting up lately (for about the last 3 weeks) more so than usual. I took an antihistamine (sp?) and it seemed to calm it down a bit. Does anyone find that shampoo / conditioner smells dont take to your hair at all ? I remember reading that awhile back and that seems true for me. That is why i like the extra virgin cocnut oil too, smells nice!

Hello. I've been coming here for quite a while now hoping that something that worked for any one of you might also help me. I've had terrible scalp odor for more than ten years now. I tried the Jason Dandruff shampoo (used it exclusively for almost a month) with absolutely no luck. In fact, my odor just seemed to get worse. I've also tried just about every product mentioned here plus more.
I believe that my problem is a digestive one. So I've been working on my problem from this angle and I just may have hit on a possible answer for me. After all my research (including numerous doctor visits), I believe my problem has been parasites. I have been tested for parasites but these tests are not always reliable, so I've gone ahead and self-treated to clean out parasites. Though I still have a problem, I seem to be improving. After more than ten years of torture, I don't think I can expect overnight success. I didn't want to write about this until I was absolutely sure this was the answer, but then wondered if anyone else had tried this. I hope to hear from those who have.
Peace.

I agree, the alcohol would be too drying and that would cause more oil production = oily scalp. I agree with fari, try the Jason Dandruff exclusively and if you want to do anything else, put EV coconut oil on your scalp at night. I think I may try that again. Just have to wait till my hair is ready to be washed again.
Good luck!

oh my God i wouldn't like to try the alcohol :o(...id be too scared!!! Id rather take the natural route. Let me know if it works for you. Do u still have that yeasty smell u had before u used jason dandruff or is it a different smell now?
The virgin coconut oil is really good and i would recommend it. But the thing is i tried the neem oil and the virgin coconut oil at the same time so i dont know which one did the trick. I think it could have been the neem oil as betsy also tried the coconut oil and it didnt really work for her so i think it could have been the neem oil. I only used it the once but it smells like rotten onions and garlic so i only managed to leave it on for 20minutes rather than the hour they recommend. It is actually a scalp treatment so natural and not dangerous. It just takes a lot of washes to wash the smell out of ur hair. I must say that the spots i had in my scalp disappeared though.
I will try it again soon when i have the guts hehe.
Just take care with the alcohol...its not naturl to put that on ur scalp missus so im a little worried. Actually why dont u try TERSASEPTIC...thats like a bodywash aswell as a shampoo..i read somewhere someone was cured. I cant get it in england. You can get it from canada but the shipping to england will cost me $50!!!Ther actual tersaseptic only costs $7!!!So i cannot think of paying all that shipping!!!ARGH....oh well....keep ur head up....and try that jason dandruff again

Thanks for replying, fari. It's good to hear from you again.
Ooh, I'm scared of those neem oil stuff. I don't mind using the virgin coconut oil, though. Does it help lessen the smell of the odor and makes your hair smell good? I'll have to hunt for that in the stores later.
I think I'm going to test out the alcohol in my hair today. I'm planning to soak the tip of a Q-tip and rub it a little on the very top of my head where it's the oiliest and smelliest. Let's see what happens.
Also, I've smelled my siblings' scalp too and it's the normal, greasy smell. The reason why I can tell that mines isn't the normal, greasy smell is because I can smell it while walking around! That's not normal!
Let's hope my alcohol testing works.

Hello Krystalyna
Im sorry it hasnt worked for you :o( but im still without smell!!! I do believe its because i used jason dandruff exclusively for a couple of months. I am now able to use jason jojoba and use the jason dandruff once a week! All i can think of is that teh jason dandruff does have a strong smell and that is still going to be on ur scalp.I use the jason jojoba conditioner only on the ends so my scalp does smell of jason dandruff but im ok with that as anything is better than that horrid yeasty smell i had before!
Im alos using virgin coconut oil twice a week on a night. I just rub the oil in my scalp and wash it off in the morning. Its done my hair and scalp alot of good. I also tried neem oil and that im scard of using again as the smell was horrendous!!! I will still use it when i have the guts to try it. It is an oil which u massage into ur scalp.its anti fungal and anti bacterial.
I still get a normal greasy smell if i dont wash my hair for a coupl of days but that is normal....everyone gets this smell. I think people with this scalp condition get very sensitive with scalp smells which is understandable as i was like this aswell. But iv smelt my friends scalps and my family's and theirs smell greasy too when they dont wash fo a couple of days. This is normal...u cant expect scalps to smell of roses .....its just not going to happen as our scalps secrete sebum which smells oily. Im just going to accept my scalp now...i think the jason dandruff worked for me. I still think u should use it exclusively and then use it once a week? If not try getting virgin coconut oil and seeing if that helps?
I hope this helps
