Scalp pain &Hair Loss, Natural solutions??? (Scalp Pain, Tight Scalp)

Comments
OK, Here's what has happened, I had a weird flu (high fever also can trigger hair loss) that lasted about a week and I took zinc & ibuprofin (these can also can cause hair loss)while at the same time knew that I would be loosing my job in the next two weeks (no imediate prospects). Ok, an illness & stress, a double wammy for hair loss. I also have been dieting all summer and I'm down about 16 lbs with another 30 to go! All hair loss factors! But now I'm really scared my hair is falling out and I am also experiencing this burning on my scalp. I just purchased B6, B12, Biotin and Q10. When can I expect some of these horrible things happening to my head to stop? Also, I am no longer going to drink city water, it's bottled or nothing for me because I just read that the chlorine in the water can also aid in hair loss. Please help! How long until until my hair stops shedding? I'm also going to go buy Nizerol today.

Hair Loss Diagnosis and Analysis

Hair Loss Diagnosis
Before recommending or performing a hair restoration procedure, a hair restoration doctor will conduct a scalp examination to determine the cause of hair loss. If the examination indicates that hair loss may be due to a condition other than male or female pattern baldness, the physician will seek the cause with other diagnostic measures. In some cases an underlying condition may have to be treated before hair restoration is undertaken.

Hair Pull

A hair pull is a diagnostic procedure used in virtually every patient with a complaint of unexplained hair loss, to assess the presence or absence of any abnormalities in the hair growth cycle. About 25 to 50 hairs are removed from the scalp by a series of gentle hair pulls. Normally only a few hairs are dislodged with each pull. When more are removed the possibility of an abnormality of hair growth cycling is indicated; the ends of the pulled-out hairs may be examined under a microscope to evaluate the condition of the hair shaft and the bulb (the end of the hair shaft extracted from the hair follicle).

Variations of the hair pull are the phototrichogram and hair window:
Phototrichogram— hairs are clipped or shaved in an area of the scalp and consecutive photographs taken over a period of 3 to 5 days to determine the pattern of hair growth.

Hair window— hairs are clipped or shaved in an area of the scalp and hair growth is evaluated over the next 3 to 30 days.

Abnormalities of hair growth cycling is a relatively uncommon cause of hair loss but may occur at any age. Underlying causes of these abnormalities include thyroid hormone imbalance, nutritional deficiencies, side effects of certain drugs, anemia and other systemic illness, and psychological stress.

Scalp Biopsy

A biopsy of the scalp is usually performed only if additional information is needed to evaluate the mechanism of hair loss inside the hair follicle. Biopsy is not necessary in the great majority of patients evaluated for hair loss and hair restoration.

Hair Shaft Evaluation

If a hair shaft abnormality or infection is suspected, the hair shafts removed from the scalp by hair pull are examined under a microscope. Hair shaft abnormalities and fungal, bacterial or viral infection can be responsible for hair loss associated with hair breakage, hair shedding and hair that is unruly.

Hair Analysis
Hair analysis is a laboratory test performed if a hair shaft abnormality needs to be assessed for (1) altered hair-protein profile due to an inherited abnormality, or (2) drug ingestion or heavy metal contamination. Hair analysis is ordered by a hair specialist physician only to determine the cause and mechanism of a hair shaft abnormality. The test has no value for the diagnosis of systemic disease or nutritional status, contrary to claims by non-physician "hair analysis specialists".

» how many hairs are you loosing?
T, I'm loosing between 200-400 hairs per day. I did not buy the Nizerol at the pharmacy because the pharmacist said that with no symptoms of seb derm or dandruff then I could actually be causing more hair loss by using it. I went to the health food store and purchased Jason hair products (Biotin shampoo & conditioner for thinning hair).
This whole thing is just unbelievable. I have such healthy hair. All those hair color chemical hair experiements applied to my hair in my 20's didn't even burn my scalp or cause serious damage my hair held up like a trooper but this is unbelievable!
Any thoughts?

Scalp pain &Hair Loss, Natural solutions???

Hi Victoria -

Sounds like you are suffering from Telogen Effluvium. When the body gets a physical or psychological shock, a few weeks to a few months later the hair falls out. (This is what happens when women shed after having a baby - the temporary hormone imbalance sends the growing hair into telogen status, and then they fall out later.) If the cause was a short-lived thing, you should shed for a few months and then start to see regrowth. TE seldom results in bald spots or complete baldness. If the thinness of your hair starts becoming noticeable, there are products you can use to thicken it up while you wait for regrowth. Look at the TE forum here - there is LOTS of information there.

Many TE sufferers report feeling scalp pain and tightness or burning. I know I did in the earlier stages of my TE. I have yet to read why so many of us experience it - I think it is a symptom, rather than the cause, of the TE. If you haven't already, call and make an appointment with a dermatologist. They often have a 2-3 month wait to get an appointment.

Good luck! And try not to worry - hard not to do, I know, especially if you read some of the horror stories on this website!;-) Remember that the successful TE patients don't spend much time surfing the net ...

@ Shannon

another thing...

Also, Victoria - if it is TE, then it doesn't matter what you do - the hair that is destined to fall out will fall out no matter how often you shampoo, what you use, etc.

Just in case the cause of the TE isn't your stress/weight loss/high fever:If you have to wait a long time before seeing your dermatologist, it might be worth seeing if you can get another doctor (family doctor, ob-gyn, etc.) to run some basic bloodwork - ferritin, iron, thyroid, and glucose. Low ferritin and thyroid disease are common causes of hair loss, and the sooner you fix it the sooner the shed will stop.

Good luck!
