Wellbutrin Help (Anti-depressants & Hair Loss) |
This is awful. The only antidepressant that works for me, and I have tried them all, is Wellbutrin. Unfortunately, my hair is falling out at an unbelievable rate. As I look back over the last few years I can contribute all of my hair loss to this. The times when I quit taking it, the hairloss stopped. I distinctly remember my husband commenting on the volume of hairloss-and then commenting "hey, the hairloss seems to have stopped" (he of course noticed because there was always hair on the bathroom floor when it was falling out). I just started again a month ago-and its falling out like crazy again.
(How the heck to you guys count how many hairs you are losing)
Three questions:
Do you think this will continue until I'm bald if I keep taking this medication?
Is there anything anyone knows I can do that will help (other than stop wellbutrin)?
I started using Rogaine before I know it was the Wellbutrin- will it hurt to stop the Rogaine, or should I keep that up too?
This is so bad.

1.
Hair loss is a well known side effect of anti depressant. The hair loss will continue as long as you use it.
2.
Hair loss is usually present for about 2 weeks after you start Rogaine. You can see hair growth after that.
3. My personal opinion is that your hair loss is due to anti depressants. To stop hair loss, you can try stopping anti depressants and try alternative health treatment for depression like Yoga

I used Wellbutrin and lost 70% of my hair. Some of it grew back but not nearly what it was before. But I also suffer from AGA and am 53. I've tried other antidepressants like Vivactil, Effexor and Luvox for example and didn't suffer hair loss at all. Is there another antidepressant that is in the same category as Wellbutrin? You might want to try that. Good luck to you, Ellen

Unfortunately, Wellbutrin is the only antidepressant that works for me. I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place. I've tried going with out anti-depressants, but it is never good. I'll talk with my psychiatrist this week.

Wellbutrin Help |
I stopped wellbutrin a few years ago because of the horrible hair shed, and it stops and starts again. It has started again after about 3 months of lovely growth. It's a horrible thing. My life will never be the same. It's a constant worry always. I feel it falling on my shoulders at work, on the floor at home, when I lay down on the sofa....it's everywhere. I have seen endo's, dermatologists, homeopathics, MD's and internest's. No one has an answer, yet I notice it more and more on women these days. I'm heart broken. Defeated at the moment.

Dont stop wellbutrin.Wellbutrin, is an atypical antidepressant that acts as a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor, and nicotinic antagonist. It belongs to the chemical class of aminoketones and is similar in structure to the stimulant cathinone, to the anorectic diethylpropion, and to phenethylamines in general.

Wellbutrin Help |
I was on Wellbutrin for about six years. I loved it. I had tried a few others before that; nothing worked nearly as well. My hair had started thinning a bit in my mid-20s, but nothing anyone else would notice. Only in the last few years has it escalated to an alarming rate: falling out all over the place, webbing my fingers when I wash my hair, and it's visibly thin around the part, and scalp shows on the sides if I put my hair in a ponytail etc.
I went to my GP: all hormone & thyroid stuff came back normal. I went off the pill (Alesse); three months later, hair was still falling out at the same rate. So, I went off Wellbutrin after reading this forum, about three weeks ago. So far, no difference in the shedding, but I will try staying off for six months, and will see what happens. I'll report back. But, I'm also beginning Minoxidil now. So, if I'm lucky and get results, I won't be sure what caused the regrowth. But I'm too desperate to be methodical.
For the record: I also saw a dermatologist. Most of my loss is around the crown of my head; for this reason, he thinks it's simply genetic. He says medication-related loss is typically seen all over the scalp. But my father has great hair, as do my three siblings, all in their late 30s, like me. My mother's hair thinned as she got older, but it certainly didn't start until much later for her. All the dermatologist could suggest was Minoxidil, but says the success rate with it, for women, is: 15% stop losing hair; 15% actually regrow some. Not great odds.
Good luck everyone, and thanks for sharing your experiences.

I have also been reading of this side effect of the hair for people who have switched to the generic version of Wellbutrin.....were you taking the regular or the generic brand the whole time?
Thanks again,

Wellbutrin Help |
Hi there,
If Wellbutrin is giving you memory problems, that alone is reason to go off, I would say. Have you tried talking to your doctor about other antidepressants you might use instead? There are so many now. It is unpleasant to have to go on and off several to find one that works, but it's worth it in the long run.
As I said in my post, I went off Wellbutrin and started Minoxidil at the same time. The Minox IS working, I am happy to say! I started at the beginning of June. Since about a month ago I have noticed that my part doesn't look as wide as it used to, and I can see quite a lot of new growth -- fine, short hairs over the crown of my head. (I've been told this is how the new hair comes in, and if you sustain use, the new hair will eventually reach normal thicknes.) I am beginning to feel quite a bit better about my hair.
So, I really do not know if discontinuing the Wellbutrin has played a role. I do not know if I would have had the same result while continuing it.
For what it's worth, I would say don't go off the Wellbutrin without an alternative in place. (My mood is less stable without it, but I'm doing quite well: but again, I was on it for six years, and that was accompanied by therapy with a really great psychiatrist, plus my life is easier now, circumstantially, than it was for all that time.) But DO try Minoxidil. I get the Kirkland brand (5%) off ebay -- it's really not that expensive.
Good luck & take care.
