wellbutrin, Geodon, Lamictal, Lexapro (Anti-depressants & Hair Loss)

Hello, I was on Lexapro for a year, then about a year ago I was taken off that and put on Lamictal. Then this past March I was put on Geodon and took that till the end of last month. I started wellbutrin about a month ago and in the last three weeks noticed a loss of more hair than usual. I am currently on Lamictal and wellbutrin, I talked to my Doctor about the loss of hair since taking Wellbutrin and he is taking me off of it. I am wondering if after reading these posts that it might be the Geodon that is causing the loss of hair? Is it possible to start hair loss only three weeks after taking Wellbutrin? Or is it possibly the stopping of the Geodon that is causing the hair loss? I never lost hair on Lexapro and have been off that for a year so I know it has nothing to do with the hair loss. I would doubt it is the Lamictal since I have been on that for a year with nothing till now. What do you think is the issue here with my hair loss? Also if I stop taking the Wellbutrin will my hair stop falling out and grow back? If it is in fact the Geodon will my hair stop falling out and grow back? This is sad to me, I think I caught it fast since it has only been about the last three weeks that I can tell I have been losing more hair than normal? Does anyone have any idea what the outcome will be if I stop the wellbutrin now?

Thank You,
Jennifier

Hi Jennifer

Here are some percentages for you from my own research:
5% of ppl have hair loss/thinning from Lamotrigine
I checked out Wellbutrin and the % was extremely LOW
I don't know about Geodon.
If you want to have a look yourself then check out this website:
http://www.askapatient.com/

However, as someone once said to me: "medication is guilty until proven innocent".
It sounds like its the Wellbutrin, despite the very low reported hair loss.
At least you will find out soon if it was the Wellbutrin. Apparently hair loss due to medication is reversible once you stop the medication. Also, apparently medication induced hair loss often occurs at the sides of the head, is this where your loss is?

I take Lamotrigine, started on it nearly 3 months ago now. Was diagnosed AGA a week and a half ago. I wonder about the lamotrigine and whether it is accelerating the AGA. I've halved my dose just a week ago and waiting to see what happens, although if it is contributing it might not even be dose dependant, I don't want to come off it though as I feel its helping my mental disorder.

I have not thinned enough for anyone to notice yet. I just do not know if it is the wellbutrin or the geodon. I noticed just that more comes out in the shower and the brush. I noticed that even running my hand over my head and I always get hair in my hand. It just seems that it is falling out a lot more than before and it has only been in the last few weeks. It just seems that even in my hair ties there is hair my fear is that it will keep coming out, now I am afraid to even put my hair up as I do not want to pull any of it out.

Also no there is no hair loss history with any of the ladies in my family on either side. On my dads side there is hair loss with men, but no ladies. This is not something that is gradual it is like more that is noticable in the last few weeks.

I don't have any scientific evidence, but I have been on both Wellbutrin and on and off of Geodon. I lost 80% of my hair on the Wellbutrin and only grew 10% back and it was extremely miniaturized due to existing AGA. I have never noticed any hairloss due to Geodon and I have been on and off of that for at least 3 years. Your hair should grow back (if you don't have AGA) once you get off of the Wellbutrin. Best of luck to you.

Hi Jennifer
It sounds like we are in a similar situation meds wise. I am currently weaning myself off Lamotrigine (due to dramatically accelerated AGA in my opinion)and i'm considering weaning myself off my AD too - Mirtazapine. The bummer is that I really think the Lamotrigine was having a positive impact on my mood. What are you going to do meds wise now? I don't know what to do really as the only safe option hair-wise seems to be to go med-free :-(. I'm weaning myself off Lamictal over a period of approximately two weeks, I went from 200mg to 100mg, and yesterday moved down to 50mg, have noticed some clumsiness and flattening of mood. How are you finding the weaning off of Lamotrigine?

wellbutrin, Geodon, Lamictal, Lexapro

»Hello, well at this point I am going to go off everything and test the air from there. The way I look at the AD is that I would be even worse if I lost my hair. I am at 100mg of lamictal and will be going to 50mg soon. I do feel a little more aggitated now but I know that it will pass. I was on Geodon and when I went off that I felt really aggitated for a couple of days and then things were ok. With my hair loss it seems to have or be a loss all over maybe more around the front of my face, but all over. It really makes me sad. I have thin hair anyway, but always had a good amount of hair though. I am afraid to wash it, put it up or even brush it. So the AGA, that is balding like men do right? It does not appear that I have that, at least I do not think so. A lot of the men on my dad's side of the family have man balding but nothing on my mothers side. I never had a problem with the hair loss thing till recently. At this point I just hope that going off everything does not make my hair really start to fall out. The more I look at my hair the more it seems like I have lost more than I originally thought. I usually get highlights in my hair and I am not even going to do that right now. I am going to wait a few months and see what happens. None of the ladies in my family on either side have ever lost hair so I am pretty sure it is the meds. I just hope that it will grow back. I am trying not to stress about it but it is hard at times. As for the meds, I think for a long time I felt that they did help, but then when I look at my self before I went on them it is hard to say. I remember having more energy before and I am wondering if over time these meds did not make me worse. A lot has happened in the last year though, my best friends little four year old son was killed this past February so this might have made my situation worse than it would have been. I am hoping for the best though. It would be great to hear your progress though, it is like a support group. Does your doctor know you are going off your meds? Mine knows about the AD but I have not talked to him about the lamictal.

Hiya
I know how you feel re washing/brushing hair. I feel I need to keep tabs on how much i'm losing (so I can determine if it is due to the lamotrigine/if its dose dependant, etc etc) but it is really depressing doing this. When I wash my hair i'm losing around 200+ hairs and when I brush it in the morning i'm losing around 100 hairs. Way too much.
I read that it will take about 2months after stopping a med for hair to grow back or start growing back. I've also read that hair loss can continue for some time after stopping a med. So its anybodies guess what will happen really! At least it can't be a bad thing coming off the med, heh.
My doctor doesn't know i'm going off my meds, i've only been on the lamotrigine approx 12 weeks so it shouldn't be too much of a shock/surprise to my system.
Yes, it would be good to keep in contact with you and see how you're going re lamotrigine, etc.

» »Hello, well at this point I am going to go off everything and test the air
» from there. The way I look at the AD is that I would be even worse if I
» lost my hair. I am at 100mg of lamictal and will be going to 50mg soon. I

»Well with me I have been on the lamictal for about a year and if I was losing hair due to the lamictal it was not really noticed. I have been on the Wellbutrin for about a month and in the last few weeks I really noticed a ton of hair coming out. But like I said I also went off the Geodon so hopefully it was not this that made it start. I could handle my hair taking a while to grow back, if I could just stop losing it now. I have not really thought of how many hairs I am losing at one time. I lost more in the shower and brushing but I notice that through out the day I will lose hair more than I ever use to. Now my kids are looking at me because I commented on how I was going bald, they are checking out my hair now. My son is eight and told me that maybe if I just get a trim my hair will be ok, lol. My daughter is four and said if I lose my hair then how will I take her to school, a wig I guess. My husband shaves his head due to loss of hair on the top. His is due to his immune system, at least that is what we think anyway. I do not want to match his hair style..

Hi Julie,

Yes, I was diagnosed with AGA prior to taking any medications. I never lost hair due to my AGA like I did with the Wellbutrin. I would normally go through periods of shedding and usually recover a lot of what I lost. From the Wellbutrin, I shed 1000 fold what I normally would and actually lost most of my hair in just 2 short months. It absolutely accelerated the AGA like I've never seen before. What little hair grew back is a fraction of the diameter it was. I still take a mutlitude of hair vitamins but nothing has helped. I am considering spiro even though I've heard so much about shedding on that drug. But I think my age (53) has a lot to do with my poor results. Best of luck to you.

Hi Ellen, it is eb again (the gal who had such trouble with an antiD) I hope you don't mind my butting in, I just wanted to make sure I understood what you wrote:

That even when you had AGA you had periods of "remission/regrowth" so you mostly retained your hair, despite having AGA, until you took the wretched anti? If that is the case, how long did it last?

I guess I just need hope that even if what happened is even if AGA did get started by this anti TE thing, it might not be soooooooo bad?

Thanks for any input Ellen.
