Wellbutrin, hair loss, have stopped Wellbutrin (Anti-depressants & Hair Loss) |
Hi All, I'm new to the forums.
I have been on Wellbutrin since December 2005. I noticed a bit more shed than usual, but certainly nothing to be alarmed about. At the end of September 2006 after I had my hair dyed for the second time at a new salon, I was standing in front of the mirror noticing that the light was shining THROUGH the back of my long blonde hair. The last few months I have sort of noticed my part being wider than usual, and now I'm noticing that my scalp is starting to show at the back of my hair. These changes are nothing anyone else has noticed - even my critical boyfriend didn't notice anything unusual, even when I asked him specifically last night.
BUT I notice. I know it's from the Wellbutrin. In my whole life I have been depressed, stressed, vitamin deficient, whatever. My hair has NEVER thinned or fell out.
Now, it could have been the Wellbutrin and then the two dyes at that salon just exacerbated it - or it could have been because in late August I added prozac to my wellbutrin - and maybe the combo increased the hair loss.
Regardless, I have stopped the Wellbutrin (last week) and am now just on Prozac daily. I have to believe my hair will stop thinning/falling out and grow back once the Wellbutrin gets out of my system - cause I KNOW it's not the Prozac as I had been on Prozac for 8 years with absolutely no problem.
I will keep you all updated. I am using Nioxin now, but noticed actually an INCREASE of hair falling out whenever I shampoo with the Nioxin. I'm goign to switch back and forth and see if the Nioxin actually makes it worse or better.
Meanwhile I will pray that this ends. I would rather have easy weight gain from Prozac than be bald with Wellbutrin.
Thanks,
Spring

Wellbutrin, hair loss, have stopped Wellbutrin |
Hi,
I can completely relate to what you are going through. I am going through a divorce. I started taking Welbutrin 3 months ago. I have always had thick hair. I have lost sooo much hair. Especially around the hair line. At first, I thought it might be from the stress of the divorce. I have read where stress can cause hair loss. I also read, it could take up to a year to stop. I also read a small article 2 months ago relating to anti-depressants and hair loss. But, couldn't find enough research at the time to warrant stopping the drug. Oddly enough, I can feel stress in my scalp, it's kind of a tingly weird sensation. I am wondering if this happened to you. I was at the salon, also, last night, and my stylist who I have had for years is trying to figure out why I have had breakage also. I do color my hair, like you. Anyway, so glad I found your article today. I am seriously considering going off of Welbutrin.

I think stress DOES contribute to hair loss, but I think what happens is with Wellbutrin it either exacerbates the loss, or prevents regrowth. I don't know.
The only difference in my scalp is that it has been itchy. That could be just normal dryness.
If you have had hair loss within three months of Wellbutrin, I think you can safely say it's the Wellbutrin. With me I was a bit unsure because I had been on Wellbutrin for so long before I really noticed a bunch of hair loss, so it was hard for me to attribute the loss solely to Wellbutrin. Regardless, it's not worth it. I was on Wellbutrin because the side effects of Prozac kind of suck, but hey, just because I like Wellbutrin for letting me keep my sex drive and speeding up my metabolism - it's not worth it. Plus, the stress of being on it and wondering if it was causing me to lose hair was probably ironically not helping the hair loss situation at all!
Prozac is better for my mood anyway.
if you really want to stay on the Wellbutrin, I would look into taking a supplement with Zinc, Selenium and Silica for sure. If it's not worth it to you - just find another anti-D. There are lots out there.....
If you stop the Wellbutrin, I think your hair should start growing back and/or stopping shedding within a few months. That seems logical to me. Wellbutin messes with your hormones, as soon as it's out of the system i think we'll be back to normal.
Good luck!!!

» I was on other meds for the better part of a year and then started Wellbutrin and after about a month of taking it I started shedding hair like no tomorrow. I stopped the medication soon after realizing that it was making my hair fall out. Well that was over three months ago and I am still having hair loss. It is hard to say if it is as bad as at first because it is so upsetting. I have not seen any new growth yet either. I can only hope that it will grow back. I took Lexapro for a year and never had any hair loss from it. I need to get my roots touched up but I do not want to do anything since I am so afraid it will make my hair fall out even more.

I stopped Adderall over three months ago and I'm still shedding. I do have regrowth but still shedding quite a bit. Adderall is a very similar drug to Wellbutrin. I hope it stops soon. How long does the average shed for these type of drugs go on? I was hoping to see some end in site.

»Hi Pam,
I just noticed your message so I thought I would return a response as to your inquiry about scalp tention/headache. As a matter of fact, I have had that exact same thing! I have never experienced that kind of tightness/stress tension on my scalp prior to taking Anti-Depr prescription. THere is no doubt this is directly related to the prescription. Additionally, I have had significant hair loss right after starting the prescription. I have made some adjustments in dosage and other alternatives, which I hope has help to taper off the hairloss. For the time being, it has slowed down a bit, however, it is too early to tell.
Anyway, FYI.

Is it more common to loose hair around the hairline and temples with TE than with other forms of HL? My whole head has been effected I have diffuse thinning everywhere but I would say my front hairline and temples were hit the hardest. I feelt scalp tension too on Adderall and had a lot of jaw clenching causing TMJ.

My son is on Adderall and has been for about three years, but he is young and I have not seen any hair loss on him. Some days I feel that my hair loss has slowed, but then other days I feel it has not. I do not know if I am just getting use to the hair loss so it seems like less.... I have lost more around the front sides and top than the rest but it is pretty even all over. I do not see any new growth yet and it has been three months that I have been off all medications. I read somewhere that it can take even six months to notice a difference in your hair, or to at least see re-growth, I hope for the best. I will surely keep everyone up to what is going on with my hair since I know that it will give others hope. I mean that is if I see good things growing in lol....

So was my son and he never had any hair loss. In my case it could be bc I'm menopausal and any shift in my hormones could be devastating to my hair. Hairloss is a common side effect of Adderall though so keep an eye on it.
I'm sure you'll have growth soon. It's not always easy to see you need to sort of comb your hair against the grain. At first I just saw the faintest little sprouts and I was sure they were vellus, but they grew taller.

I was on celexa and lexapro and never had any trouble with hairloss. Then I added wellbutrin (and felt terrific), but after 7 months of wellbutrin, I started shedding. I had blood tests for hormones, thyroid and iron - all normal. If it was wellbutrin causing hairloss, wouldnt it have started when I started taking it? Ive also heard it may be that wellbutrin increases testosterone which contributes to hairloss. I wonder if its stress related or increased testosterone or actually the wellbutrin damaging the hair? Ive been having the shedding for about a year and a half and found the wellbutrin has helped the depression moreso than the ssris but dont want to be bald! Wonder if it is just stress which maybe I can take something to help the stress or if it is testosterone and maybe spironolactone would help.
Any thoughts?

Well, as you can read from my original post, the same thing happened to me. It was a gradual loss, not a huge loss right away like most other people. I would imagine it's because it messes up your hormones, my menstrual period was totally different, I was breaking out more, etc. Now I have been off Wellbutrin for 6 weeks. My skin is clear, my periods are getting back to normal, and I am shedding almost back to normal.
I don't know what to tell you. In my opinion, and obviously you probably already instinctivly know this, it sounds like the Wellbutrin. But if the Wellbutrin is helping your depression, that's another thing altogether. Did the Celexa by itself not help you?

Hi,
I am convinced that my hairloss is probably due to the Wellbutrin I've been taking, especially after reading this. My question to Spring is, since you stopped taking the Wellbutrin, is there anything that you started taking in its place for your depression that seems to work like Welbutrin w/o the side effects? ...I don't think I'm ready to quit the Wellbutrin but I'm definitely ready to get my hair back.

»I was on Wellbutrin for 2 years and in that time I started to notice major thinning on the top/front of my head as well as a larger partline, etc. Like others have said, no one else noticed it, but I really did and it was destroying me. Well, I talked to my doctor about it and told him that it all started around the time I started taking the Wellbutrin. He took me off of it and now I take a supplement called SAM-e. It is a natural hormone that your body makes and while it is still fairly new, it has been shown to help depression. I've been taken that for about 2 months now (and off the Wellbutrin for 2 months) and I must say that my hair is DEFINITELY coming back. I have tons of regrowth and my hair just feels so much thicker and healthier!! The SAM-e is good for the depression too. I had to increase my dosage b/c I wasn't feeling quite as good as with the Wellbutrin, but it's definitely comparable. I also really miss the increased metabolism that Wellbutrin provided. I've gained a little weight in the last 2 months, but now it's just up to me to really be strict with my diet/exercise to keep my weight down. I just don't think that we can have it all ladies....it's either the hair or the increased metabolism....take your pick.

Wellbutrin, hair loss |
I have been on Wellbutrin 450 mg for many years with great success. I also take Lamictal 300 mg and clonazepam 1 mg.
Everyone knows that the maximum dose of Wellbutrin is 450 mg; right? Through a pharmacy error I was given 800 mg daily of Wellbutrin for two months before I realized it. Needless to say I thought I was going crazy because if you know all the side-affects of Wellbutrin on the clinical dosages, you can imagine they are doubled with a double dose; right?
I am upset b/c I have been on the drug with great success over the years with minimal side-affects. But this overdose has caused increased problems with a lot of things. Hair thinning is one of them. this really is not a good thing. I can see my scalp and my hair is thinning.
Has anyone else been overdosed on Wellbutrin? Those who have may no longer be with us since that amount of the drug could cause seizures or death. I know that this OD with all the other meds is not a good thing. I was confused, dazed, felt like I was getting alzheimer's disease--and I am on 46.
Has anyone been through this? I need to know. Thanks so much.

Wellbutrin, hair loss |
» » Hi All, I'm new to the forums.
» »
» » I have been on Wellbutrin since December 2005. I noticed a bit more
» shed
» » than usual, but certainly nothing to be alarmed about. At the end of
» » September 2006 after I had my hair dyed for the second time at a new
» » salon, I was standing in front of the mirror noticing that the light
» was
» » shining THROUGH the back of my long blonde hair. The last few months I
» » have sort of noticed my part being wider than usual, and now I'm
» noticing
» » that my scalp is starting to show at the back of my hair. These
» changes
» » are nothing anyone else has noticed - even my critical boyfriend didn't
» » notice anything unusual, even when I asked him specifically last night.
» »
» » BUT I notice. I know it's from the Wellbutrin. In my whole life I
» have
» » been depressed, stressed, vitamin deficient, whatever. My hair has
» NEVER
» » thinned or fell out.
» »
» » Now, it could have been the Wellbutrin and then the two dyes at that
» salon
» » just exacerbated it - or it could have been because in late August I
» added
» » prozac to my wellbutrin - and maybe the combo increased the hair loss.
» »
» » Regardless, I have stopped the Wellbutrin (last week) and am now just
» on
» » Prozac daily. I have to believe my hair will stop thinning/falling out
» » and grow back once the Wellbutrin gets out of my system - cause I KNOW
» » it's not the Prozac as I had been on Prozac for 8 years with absolutely
» no
» » problem.
» »
» » I will keep you all updated. I am using Nioxin now, but noticed
» actually
» » an INCREASE of hair falling out whenever I shampoo with the Nioxin.
» I'm
» » goign to switch back and forth and see if the Nioxin actually makes it
» » worse or better.
» »
» » Meanwhile I will pray that this ends. I would rather have easy weight
» » gain from Prozac than be bald with Wellbutrin.
» »
» » Thanks,
» » Spring
»
»
» I was on celexa and lexapro and never had any trouble with hairloss. Then
» I added wellbutrin (and felt terrific), but after 7 months of wellbutrin, I
» started shedding. I had blood tests for hormones, thyroid and iron - all
» normal. If it was wellbutrin causing hairloss, wouldnt it have started
» when I started taking it? Ive also heard it may be that wellbutrin
» increases testosterone which contributes to hairloss. I wonder if its
» stress related or increased testosterone or actually the wellbutrin
» damaging the hair? Ive been having the shedding for about a year and a
» half and found the wellbutrin has helped the depression moreso than the
» ssris but dont want to be bald! Wonder if it is just stress which maybe I
» can take something to help the stress or if it is testosterone and maybe
» spironolactone would help.
»
» Any thoughts?
» thanks,
» Gillian
Hello. I, also, am new to this forum and really, just stumbled across it while distressing about hair loss and surfing the internet looking for answers. I've been taking wellbutrin for about a year. I have noticed my hair thinning for a while (a few months after I started taking the wellbutrin) but really didn't know what could be causing it until now. It seems to have gotten a lot worse lately and I'm going to discontinue my wellbutrin. I have also been taking spironolactone. I thought my testerone levels were up and went to see an endocrinologist and after blood work it was determined that my testerone is normal but he put me on it just in case. The point being, spironolactone has not done anything to stop my hair loss. Or, maybe it has and I could possibly be absolutely bald without it!!

Wellbutrin, hair loss |
Hello,
While looking for some information on wellbutrin and hair loss, I discovered this forum and can't believe what I've read. It has been so incredibly helpful. I have been on wellbutrin for nearly four months and about a month ago I thought my hair was thinning on top, though my husband and four kids (teens, early 20s) couldn't detect anything. Also, I was bothered by the "tingling" sensation on my scalp just on the top of my head, and decided to talk to my doctor. My doctor told me there are "no side effects" to this drug (an erroneous statement if I ever heard one, especially since one of the side effects is that I've lost 10 pounds since starting it) and certainly nothing about hair loss. I told her I'd found a few things on the Internet and she told me in a somewhat condescending tone not to believe anything I read on the Internet. It was then I decided to go off wellbutrin gradually. Now I have found this site and have read about every single thing I've experienced, from thinning on top, being able to "see" through my hair to my scalp, the tingling sensation, my part appearing to be wider and less full, and a strange sort of "part" at the top/back of my head, which I have never experienced before. I find it strange that I have not noticed bunches of hair coming out -- it's a subtle loss. I asked my pharmacist if he has ever heard of hair loss associated with wellbutrin. He said he hadn't, but checked his book and it says that of people who quit taking wellbutrin, six per cent quit taking it because of hair loss. I intend to take this information to my ill-informed doctor. The unfortunate part about this is that the drug was very effective in bringing up my spirits (I have dealt with depression most of my life, though with therapy and no drug treatment because I don't like side effects). I have cut down gradually and now have stopped altogether. I am encouraged by people who say that their hair comes back after being off the drug. I'd like to thank everyone for writing on this subject. It has been most helpful.

Hello everyone! This site has been so helpful. I need some help PLEASE! I have been on wellbutrin for 3 months and my hair is falling out. I have lost so much and am really scared. I stopped taking it about 1 week ago. Will it stop coming out and will it ever grow back. I never knew about this side effect. It is sad b/c I felt so good on wellbutrin. I can't stand this hair thing, though. Thanks for your response.

Wellbutrin, hair loss, have stopped Wellbutrin |
Rather than using wellbutrin I too prefer prozac .Compared to former one prozac has lesser side effects and more advantageous. You have done a great job by immediate change of drug.
