Question for hairsite or anyone... (Anti-depressants & Hair Loss)

I am wondering how to determine if the celexa I was on caused my hair thinning and loss. I have stopped, but how long should I wait or what should I look for to see if my hair will regrow? Thank you for any advice about this depressing subject...

Question for hairsite or anyone...

» »Marye,

If you had a chance to read many of the other comments, including mine, you'll know that AD have a much more Hairloss effect than what the drug companies reveal. For some who think that the OBVIOUS and often SIGIFICANT hairloss is attributed to something else, they are mistaken and do not know what they are talking about. Just read how many there are who have had SIGNIFICANT hairloss since being on any one of those AD prescriptions.

Certainly there are many who are not affected, and have no HAIRLOSS, but for some, it is definitely the AD presciption is the culprit to the sudden and significant hairloss.

As for me, it was the Celexa!

It is hard to tell how long it might take before some growth begins. It could be any where from a couple of months top 8 months, if one is to regrow the one that have been lost. If the roots have not been damaged, there is a good chance a lot of the loss could come back.

I could tell you more, but got to go for now.

All the best to you!

Question for hairsite or anyone...

»Thank you for your response. I have not had any regrowth yet, and it has been almost a month since I stopped the celexa. I agree that AD can cause hairloss, depending on the individual. Too many people have posted on the internet about this issue for it not to be taken seriously by medical professionals. I realize some people are incorrect when they say hairloss happened immediately, because medical people indicate hair loss issues should be traced back to about 3 months before the actual happening to determine possible causes. I had been on celexa about 2-3 months when I noticed the increased shedding, etc. Was on it a total of almost 6 months, and stopped, as I said, almost a month ago.

I am almost afraid to ask this, but how do you know if the roots were damaged so that hair will not grow back? This is a very depressing issue for women, and although I totally realize there are many worse problems out there that people deal with, when a woman starts losing her hair, it is HUGE emotional problem, especially for people suffering with anxiety and/or depression.

I wish the best for all of us who suffer from these emotional and mental issues and hope that those of us who have lost hair will recover, and also, feel better in every way. Blessings to all.

Question for hairsite or anyone...

»Hi Marye,

First of all, yes, HAIRLOSS can start as early as about a week after starting any one of the AD prescriptions, whether it is the SSRI or other forms. HAIRLOSS can also start later, as in more gradual affect, from 6 months later to up to a year or so (this would be more gradual loss, as in some cases). But the end result is still HAIRLOSS - enough to be quite obvious and traumatic!

As for me, I noticed it within two weeks!

I have begun to taper off of the Celexa over the past two weeks and am currently on about 5 milgrms, and soon will be off of it completely to see the difference it will make.

I will let you the progress if you are interested...

As for the roots, I was, of course, speaking of the follicles. If the follicles have not been damaged, then chances of regrowth is very good. Unfortunately there is no easy way or conclusive way to determine if the follicles will allow the regrowth. One can only wait and see how the regrowth will take affect. The problem is if a person starts a different AD prescrition, it is very difficult to know how the new one is affecting the regrowth because oftentimes it takes months for ones body to rid of the existing AD prescrition in the system and for your body/scalp/follicles to recover.

The key is to remain off of the AD prescription in order to determine how the regrowth is taking place. The problem is can one afford to be off of the AD prescription for a long period? You'll have to discuss that aspect with your doctor, of course.

Also, be advised that many doctors are clueless about the extent and frequency of the HAIRLOSS in alot of the people. Subsequently, they are not much of help in combatting this serious problem/side affect!

It is about 4:00 in the morning and I am very tired and need to get to sleep but I wanted to get back to you since you are obviously very concerned and seemed to have many questions, like most of us!

Anyway, got to go for now but I have a question for you? I am beginning to do a little research on my own with many of the people on this site. The question is, did you have feelings of tingly and elctrical charges like sensation on your scalp area when you were losing your HAIR? Did you notice a tightness/tension-like dull headache on the upper part of your forehead and on top of your head? Did your scalp seemed to be much tighter than normal? When I describe tingly, electical charges like sensation, I'm referring to the feeling of pins and needles on your scalp/head??

Let me know if any of these sensations effects have been noticed by you. Thanks, and talk to you later. Hang in there - we will all help each other get through this....

Question for hairsite or anyone...

» Hi JS:

Thanks for replying in spite of your fatigue. I was up late last nite too, but not at 4:00!

Yes, I did have feelings of pins and needles in my scalp a few times during my celexa regimen. I never attributed it to the drug, just thought it was weird. Also had some head pain at times, but never put two and two together.

Right now I am totally off all meds and my doc told me to take xanax twice a day to ward off hopefully any anxiety attacks, which is what I suffered from, not as much depression. The celexa worked great and was a good med, but of course, this side effect has stopped me from taking it forever. I weaned off in a period of one week and didn't really have any problems from that.

It has been one month and no regrowth yet, nor shedding halt. Am trying to remain hopeful. The following link was interesting...http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=138265.

I probably do seem a bit obsessed right now, but probably because I am off the ssri med, and not taking as much xanax as I should, because I don't want to feel like a zombie.

What are you going thru? Can you share your story again briefly?

Thanks again for your concern and merry christmas to you and hope we all have a happy new year.

Question for hairsite or anyone...

Hi JS
I have been taking Ativan due to a rather traumatic episode in Sept 06. Within a week I noticed my hair falling out, but I did not attribute this to the medication, rather to the stress I was experiencing. Interestingly, I noticed hot, electrical and/or tingling sensations in my scalp for several weeks. Those sensations have stopped but the hair loss continues. I just found this web site today and have learned more about hair loss than I ever wanted to know.

Question for hairsite or anyone...

»Hi Edee & Marye (I meant to get back to you earlier Marye),

First of all to Edee: I think some doctors mistakenly over emphasize about sudden HARILOSS to Stress and other related issues. Partly because they don't really know what they are talking about. Certainly some hairloss can be slightly affected by Stress and other factors, but most of the time in cases such as you are seeing, as described in this WEBSITE, and thousands of others whom we don't even know about because they haven't a clue about WEBSITES such as this, the HAIRLOSS is much more prevalent than people or doctors realize.

The fact that your loss came farily sudden and dramtically like mine, and many others, it should be very clear and obvious the HAIRLOSS is attributed to the prescriptions!

I'm sorry to hear that you are now going through this. I am not familiar with Ativan (if it is in the SSRI family or not, for example) but if you have only been on it for about a week or so, as long as you continue with it, chances are your LOSS will continued to get worse. The longer one stays on certain prescriptions, which has such HAIRLOSS affect, the longer the HAIRLOSS might occurr. The problem is choosing between the prescription or HAIRLOSS. In some cases, I'm not sure which might be worse?

You obviously need to discuss such matters with your doctor (if he or she knows anything...) as to whether to reduce the dosage or change the prescription. However, it is hard to determine the after affects of the previous prescription over a current one as to how the current one might be affecting your hair.

As for you Marye: You were asking about my story? It's kind of long story, but as for the HAIRLOSS, it occurred within two weeks. I lost significant amount within the first week to second week, and continued into the months. I have reduced the dosage to almost nothing at this point for the past two to three weeks. Within the next week or so, I will completely be off.

For now, the loss does not seem to be getting worse, however, it is too early to tell. I won't know for about another month or two, give or take, to be able to tell if regrowth will begin to take place... (due to the Telogen and Anagen Phase of hair growth)...

Let's hope the new year will bring some good news for us, and we will continue to persevere through these trials and challenges...

Take care for now,

- JS -

Thanks for the info

Hi JS:

Thanks for replying..first of all, I do agree that doctors tend to brush this stuff off. If stress causes hair loss, then why did I not lose any hair in 1995 when my first husband suddenly died, I went thru financial probs, then menopause, etc.? If ever a time existed that was stressful, it was then and my hair was fine.

I realize as we age our hair gets thinner, and I am 58, but this shouldn't be in a manner which consists of hair falling out in dozens of strands in the sink, etc., as happened when I was on celexa. I weaned myself off with doctor's knowledge in about a week's time, and was fine. I'm just taking xanax now to control anxiety. Hope it works. I also don't know if my hair will come back. Been off celexa for a little over a month and I know it will take several to know..keeping my fingers crossed. I am still shedding hair but can't tell yet if it has slowed.

Good luck to all of us struggling with anxiety, depression, med issues, etc. I hope that 2007 will be a better year for us all....take care.

Marye
