Can saline breast implants really cause hair loss?! (Breast Implants & Hair Loss)

HELP! I am a 35 year old healthy female who has had saline breast implants for about the last 8 years. About 1 1/2 years ago my hair began falling out. I have seen 4 dermatologists and no one can find a cause. All my bloodwork is normal. Could it be the implants causing the hair loss? If so, what particular type of doctor do I go to to find out for sure if its the implants causing the hair loss!? HELP!!!

Can saline breast implants really cause hair loss?!

There is no conclusive link between breast implants and hair loss. But anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that there is indeed a large number of people who reported hair loss after having breast implants done.

That said, the hair loss could be due to SURGERY and the anesthetia used the the procedure rather breast implants per se. Most in the hair transplant field already know that anesthesia may trigger hair loss in certain individuals.

Can saline breast implants really cause hair loss?!

Oh my gosh! I thought I was nuts wondering about that same problem! I had saline breast implants two years ago and my hair loss started four months later. I couldn't IMAGINE it had ANYTHING to do with the implants since they were, after all, saline. But, my hairloss continues and NONE of the docs I have been to can find a cause. I asked about the association with implants and no one has heard of such a problem! I am frustrated beyond belief because I do indeed believe the implants could be the reason. IF it is due to surgery, the anesthesia is long out of my system and shouldn't the hair have come back????? I am beyond distressed about this and thought I was the only one blaming the implants.

Question for lynnwood

Did you have any sort of bad stress right before your hairloss began 1 1/2 years ago? I know the implants caused me some depression right afterwards (heaven knows why, I love them), but it can happen post surgically. Since you are so far out from the procedure, did something else stressful happen in your life that maybe set off the hairloss?

Hi Lolli and no I don't think I had any really bad stress. The only think I can think of is that I had my first child 2 years ago. But all of the docs said that my hair loss was related to having a baby, it should have stopped falling out by now. Do you know what type of specialist we should see to know for sure if its the implants causing the hair loss? I was wondering if maybe it would be an immunologist? I'm not sure. I just had a scalp biopsy on my head by another dermatologist and will get the results this monday. I hope they give me some answers. I will let you know.

tests

lynnwood, I'm really worried about this issue because I have had every conceivable test. My symptoms were, hairloss, fatigue (abnormal levels), insomnia and headaches (but I do suffer from migraines anyway). I had a frozen shoulder about a year ago and 5 bouts with kidney stones followed by 5 surgeries for same. My implants were done in June of 2004 and the hairloss began in October of 2004. I have seen at least 4 derms, 2 GP's, an rheumatologist, an internist and a cardiologist (for the fatigue). They have done MRI's, CT scans, Nuclear cardiac testing. YOU NAME IT! I am sick, sick sick of having these tests and being told by a couple of the docs that 'perhaps some psych counseling would help'. This is simply because I have all these bizarre problems with no known cause. I'm happy that they haven't found a dire cause for the hairloss, fatigue, etc., but I AM NOT NUTS!! My hair is at least 1/2 of what it used to be, but since they can't see that by just looking...they assume that I'm imagining it. I have been researching saline implants and i'm really concerned about the hairloss possibly being attributed to them. I am so happy with them, but this is not the price I want to pay...my health. I know the shell is silicone, but is it enough to cause these problems? I don't know and can't find anyone who does. I will continue to look on my own. Let me know what your scalp biopsy says. Lolli

tests

Lolli, It seems I have many of the same symptoms you are having. I have also had insomnia for a few years now and I am also tired 'all' the time. Most nights I am in bed by 9am! Although about 1/2 of the nights I just lay there wide awake. I also have had docs suggest antidepressants, although I do not have any depression. Could the implants be also causing the insomnia? I never had any trouble sleeping prior to the implants either. Have you seen an immunologist? I was thinking of maybe seeing if they can test the implants somehow. If you ever want to email me out of here it is: lynnwood42@comcast.net Keep me informed!

Dear Hair Site, I had my implants put in about 8 years ago and the hair loss started about 1 1/2 years ago. I am 35 years old. I do not think my hair loss could possibly be from the anesthesia. Did you have any other ideas?

My Scalp BIOPSY results...what do they mean?

Here are the results of my scalp biopsy results:

--non-scarring alopecia and mild androgenetic alopecia is favored although this could be normal for some individuals,
--telogen effluvium cannot be completely excluded,
--focal chronic perifolliculitis is present.

Does anyone know what all that means? The only thing the dermatologist told me about the results is that they really didn't show much and that rogaine was her only suggestion. The mens version twice per day over my whole head. HELP!! I need help to understand the biopsy results more!

Have either of you ladies been tested for Systemic Lupus? I only ask because I saw a show about implants triggering it, because the body tries to reject them and the immune system gets all confused. I have systemic lupus myself (although not because of implants) and when it flares up it causes my hair to thin. Other symptoms are headaches, fatigue, joint pains, sometimes dry eyes, sometimes mouth ulcers. I'm no doctor so I could be totally wrong, but it might be worth a check? If it was lupus, treatment wouldn't fix the hairloss straight away unfortunately, it took me a few months after my lupus was stabilised (and that took a few months itself) before it stopped coming out at the same rate. I hope this is of some help though.

Have you had your ferritin level tested. The symptoms you are describing also sound like low ferritin. Ferritin needs to be 100+ for hair loss to stop, most doctors are clueless about this. Get your ferritin tested and if it is low start taking iron supplements.

I also have implants and hair loss.

Can saline breast implants really cause hair loss?!

I'm wondering if any of you women could have a hormonal hair loss. I have a hormone problem concerning androgens, which your body can either make too much of or the receptors in the skin are too sensitive to the normal levels. I have the extra-sensitive androgen receptors, and I have been losing scalp hair, growing whiskers, acne, depression, etc. I see an Endocrinologist to get Spironolactone, which is an antiandrogen. This helps all my symptoms. I have been considering breast implants and wondering about potential problems because the breast is, of course, a female organ and I don't know if this "trauma" of implants could set off some hormonal problem. Also, during perimenopause and menopause, the relationship between a woman's estrogen levels and androgen levels changes, with estrogen levels dropping for a number of years. So it it common during that period for women to have hair thinning and to grow whiskers. I've been helped by the book that Dr. Geoffrey Redmond, an Endocrinologist has published. His first book saved me 10 years ago! He has a website, www.hormonehelpny.com, which I would recommend.

I went to Dr. Redmond and he is an idiot. I'm glad the spiro is helping you. He prescribes spiro for everyone. It doesn't matter to him why you are losing your hair he'll just give you some spiro and send you on your way. Spiro has also harmed alot of women - me being one of them. The reason Dr. Redmond is now practicing in NYC is b/c he lost his medical license in Ohio.
Good Luck, T

There's another possibility. Adrenal fatigue. I would recommend you check this out as a possible cause of your hair loss.

There is also some interesting data out there on levels of stress hormone and depression in women with augmented breasts.

I am "cosmetically enhanced" myself and have had saline implants since July 2000. I've been having problems sleeping and have been experiencing hair loss over the last ~2 years. There's always a possibility that the body is reacting to the presence of a foreign body, but in my case I believe this whole mess is from elevated levels of cortisol (stress hormone). Stress and cortisol can no doubt form a catch-22. Insomnia, chronic fatigue, hair loss and mid section weight gain are all possible symptoms. I am scheduled for re-aug surgery next week, as one of my implants was ruptured during my most recent mammogram.

I am hypo. I have had hair loss since my teens. In 95 I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. I had implants since 2000. I noticed after surgery I was depressed and had more hairloss. It resumed to my normal 200 aday. I had 2 surgeries on my leg and each time I had more hair loss. I feel the surgeries and the anesthesia caused the hair loss. I have aways been sensitive to pain meds and they always cause me to have temp depression.

I, too am experiencing hair loss about 4 months after my implants? I have had all the same tests listed in this blog...scalp biopsy, lupus,...is anyone experiencing loss of hair in other spots like arm hair or eyebrows???
I almost at a point where I am considering having them removed. As much as I love them, the emotional trauma of hair loss is ruining my life!!
If anyone else is experiencing the other body hair loss I would appreciate your response

Can saline breast implants really cause hair loss?!

I do not have implants but I can realate to losing hair after surgery. It is considered normal for hair loss to occur anywhere from 2-4 months after surgery. It sounds like that has happened to a few of you. This loss is in response to the physical truma of Sugery and possibly from the anesthesia. For some reason the hair loss does not occur imediatly after surg. but a few months later. It should stop on it's own and regrow, however it can triger AGA in people who are prone to that. That is what I experiance after my second sinus surgery 5 years ago, my hair now is slowly thinning. I would get implants myself if it were not for the hair loss associated with Surg. I am completely flat chested, but I am not willing to have an increase in hair loss to deal with it. Good luck

I've had implants for over 21 years and my HL didn't start until 2 yrs ago from which had nothing to do with the implants. My HL had to do with Peri/menopause. So much of what happens is purely coincental. If I were going to have HL I would have had it a lot sooner than 19 years later.

Not true T, Dr Redmond never prescribed Spiro for me and I found him to be the most knowledgeable doctor around to treat women's hair loss. Also what proof do you have of your statement about him leaving Cleveland? He helped me a great deal and I happen to think that he's a good doctor.

alopecia = baldness
So that first bit says they favor genetic hairloss. It may have zero to do with your implants.

telogen effluvium is hair loss, temporary, generally caused by trauma like childbirth, surgery, drugs, starvation, etc In other words, hairloss caused for some random reason. They can't exclude it. I think that means they just didn't find a conclusive reason causing yours.

chronic perifolliculitis (this has to be broken up to be defined)
Peri means around, itis means inflammation. Follicle is what the inflammation is around. You have inflamed hair follicles.

I know you may be long gone, but this may be of use to someone else reading through later.

Hair loss can occur due to surgery and anesthesia. But since you had your implants 8 years ago and hair loss started only for the past one and half years, the reason could be something else.
Do a hair analysis to know whether it is TE or AGA.
