9 months on Yasmin - update (Yasmin)
|
I posted my story last December. My skin is still beautiful, I only need to wash my hair every 2-3 days, and no more pimples in the scalp, ever. I shed about 10-12 hairs in the tub, and a few more on my brush when drying my hair. Scalp itching is barely noticeable compared to before I started Yasmin where it was unbearable.
However during one cycle I think I started my pill a day too late and my own hormones had already kicked in, and I got the intense scalp itchiness and tingling and had another massive shed So that scared me and since then I have been taking it non-stop, not having a period. It's working fairly well so far, compared to other things I have tried that did not work (Nizoral, etc). I have had some regrowth in one area but still waiting for regrowth in the area where I most recently lost hair. And the regrowth is slow, one hair at a time I plan on taking it non-stop and having a period every 3 months instead of every month. I have a derm appt. on March 7th and he is supposed to prescribe additional Spiro to give me a boost. Good luck to everyone else battling this horrible problem...

Hi Anne, how old are you and how long had you been losing before you started Yasmin? Are you only on Yasmin and nothing else? How long did it take for your scalp pains and shed to decrease? Interesting that your head responded immediately after forgetting just 1 pill! Thanks, eb

Hi eb,
I am 36 and I have been suffering from hair loss for roughly 3 years altogether. Yes, I'm only on Yasmin for now. My derm is supposed to add spiro when I go back in March (he wanted to give Yasmin a year to work before adding spiro, to avoid taking meds unnecessarily) The scalp pain and shed decreased the second month, and I started seeing regrowth in month 3, the first regrowth is now about 3 inches long and is located mostly in my hairline. I think I am still losing hair faster than it is regrowing (be prepared, regrowth is slow), however my shed has definitely slowed down to a normal rate. I am too scared to try anything like Minoxidil.
I kind of freaked when I got the wave of itchiness and pain and the shed after starting my pack 1 day late - other times I started on time and did not experience this. Scary...

Anne,
Have you ever been diagnosed with anything? Were your hormones all in normal range? Did you have any other symptoms? Sorry for all the questions I'm trying to figure out what to do. Thanks!

Thanks so much Anne, I check back a few times a week but just now saw your reply. I am on 100mg spiro for 6 weeks and so far my scalp hurts and itches more. Shed still up. It really sucks and I understand how scary it must be to be just slightly off on your pill schedule and the pains come back. I'm glad you have found something that works for you. I bet adding spiro maybe even just a small dose like 50mg will help your hair even more. Thanks for replying.

9 months on Yasmin - TO ANNE
|
A few months ago my scalp really hurt, this went on and on. Recently I noticed no dandruff, no pain from my scalp...very strange since I'm not on anything new. I was told that yasmin might help but the hormone levels are not consistent with the normal levels for someone my age...also, I would only be able to take it for a few years and then I would have to stop (menopause). I decided not to pursue it right now. The only thing I have done is start Dr. Proctors shampoo. I love not have the aching scalp though. Shed is still there, unfortunately but at least my hair is growing too. I wonder if the shampoo is helping?

Hi Rachel,
After 3 years I still do not have a diagnosis - my case has been mismanaged so far. My GP said it was stress, and gave my Nizoral (did not help) then Elocom lotion to get rid of the itchiness and pain (did not help) and said my hair would grow back when I got rid of the stress (uh-huh...) I researched HL and went to my Gyn, who agreed to prescribe Yasmin and told me to see a derm. It took 7 months to get a derm appt (lovely canadian health system) the derm wouldn't prescribe Spiro until I had been on Yasmin for a year. I got him to give me a 25mg scrip last week *sigh* I also went for some blood tests - iron and thyroid - this week, getting the results on the 26th. The derm thinks it's the scalp inflammation that is causing the HL, he gave me this really strong cortisone for when I get itchies and pain (Clobetasol). Clobetasol works wonderfully well - gets completely rid of the itch attacks.
Unfortunately I seemed to have had another mini-shed recently... my hair is getting really thin on the top-front, I've resorted to avoiding strong lights . Strange since there are no more hairs than usual in the tub (15 on average). The small amount of new growth is still going strong, it's over 3 inches now. I need to get a confirmed diagnosis before looking into hair transplants (my next strategy, before I go bald)

It may be. I noticed that I have more sheds when the pain/itchiness is there. If the shampoo is helping, keep using it! Nioxin shampoo really helped the itchies for me. It brings them to a tolerable level - without it I go crazy. My derm just prescribed Clobetasol lotion (a very strong cortisone) and boy does it work - gets rid of the itchies in no time flat. Yasmin really helped the itch as well by getting rid of the excess sebum and pimples in my scalp.
Good luck!

How long are you on the Clobetasol? Is that for AGA? My derm gave me lidex which can make your scalp have breakouts. I wonder if the Clobetasol will decrease your shed?

Hi, this is MR,
My first time reading this forum and I can't believe it took so long to find!
Here are my stats: Turned 30 last month. Been losing for exactly 2 years. At first my dermo thought it was telogen efluvium after a bad surgery, or perhaps a reaction to Topamx (for Migraines) but it's been going on too long. Hormone / Thyroid & iron levels average.
I've been on Spiro 100 mg for about 18 months, and 9 months on Women's Monoxidil 5% + Estrogen which my Dermo sells from his office, and Clobetasol 2 x daily. I would like to start taking Yasmin, (and have the Rx already filled and waiting to go.) but I am scared about losing more hair!
This sucks and I'm really sorry to hear about so many women experiencing hairloss. But I have to say I'm amazed that some people's experiences so closely mirror my own.
I told my dermo about all my symptoms, and he basically dismissed the tingling and pain. Itchiness is acceptable though!
Does anyone experience scalp pain? Almost like your hair is actually hurting at the roots? The tingling is like nothing I've felt before, and definitly precedes an episode of major hair loss.
What can I look for in terms of improvement? How do I know if things are getting better?
Thanks for the honesty,
MR
