I went to a derm recently, in my never ending quest for a solution to this nightmare. He diagnosed TE, but ran some blood work. I specifically asked him to check my ferritin, because in the past, doctors have only checked iron. A few days later he got the lab results back and told me that everything looked fine. I asked for a copy, which I just received. My ferritin was 29, and this derm told me that everything looks fine. Do they even read these lab reports? Well, I know from this board, you need at least 40 to maintain hair, and at least 70 to regrow it. I need to increase my iron and I'd like to know the best supplements to take. Right now, I take many vitamins and supplements for my adrenal problem, but none of them have much iron in them. I wanted to wait until I got the labs back before I started taking iron. Also, I read that I should take lysine along with the iron, as it helps the body to absorb the iron better. Any suggestions as to what to buy, how much to take? By the way, this is a good example of why you need to get copies of your labs. Don't assume, if a doctor tells you everything is fine, that it really is. If I hadn't gotten a copy of the labs for myself, I would have assumed my ferritin was fine. Unfortunately, this hair loss experience has taught me that you can't rely on doctors, you have to educate yourself and be pro-active in treating hair loss and other health issues..

Hi Amy606, agree with you totally about not listening to docs, will write about my own recent experience soon. As far as iron supplements are concerned, many of us on this site are taking Spatone. Have a look at Anaemia board for further info. Hope this helps. Calysto.

Amy606,
I take Florisene (see Florisene.com)
If you are not from the UK, you may be able to buy it online.
It contains ferrous sulphate, lysine, vitamin C and vitamin B12.
It was created specifically to raise ferritin for women with hair loss.
Good luck,
Steph.

» Amy606,
I really like Slow-FE (65 mg iron) as it doesn't cause any cramping or stomach upset in my case. You can get it at most any drugstore from what i can see. I've had a history of low iron (yet not anemic) with doctors telling me the same thing as well (that I'm fine yet my ferritin levels have been below normal. Slow-FE seems to have boosted my ferritin levels very well over the past 6 months or so. Now, I only supplement during my period and whenever I feel sluggish. Gentle Iron (Solgar?) is another good "maintenance" iron as it's only 25 mg and also does not cause GI disturbances.
Good luck to you.

Is this regimen working for you, either to stop shed or regrowth? My ferritin is low for growth though in the normal range as far as my MD is concerned. B12 is low & I'm getting weekly shots.

There is no clear association between low serum ferritin and chronic diffuse telogen hair loss.
BACKGROUND:
Low iron stores are considered a possible cause of chronic diffuse telogen hair loss in women. Estimation of serum ferritin is recommended as part of the initial assessment when women present with chronic diffuse telogen hair loss, and iron supplementation therapy is commonly recommended for those found to have low iron stores.
OBJECTIVES:
To evaluate the relationship between low serum ferritin (</=20 micro g L-1) and chronic diffuse telogen hair loss in women.
METHODS:
Between 1997 and 1999, 194 consecutive women who presented to a specialist hair clinic were assessed for diffuse telogen hair loss of greater than 6 months duration. All underwent biochemical investigations that included serum ferritin and had two 4-mm punch biopsies taken from the vertex of the scalp. One biopsy was sectioned horizontally and the other vertically.
RESULTS:
Twelve women were found to have a serum ferritin of 20 micro g L-1 or less (6.2%). Androgenetic alopecia was found on scalp biopsy in seven of these 12 women, while the other five women had normal histology. The five women with low iron stores and normal histology were treated with iron supplementation alone. This was continued until the serum ferritin was > 20 micro g L-1. Cessation or reversal of hair loss was not seen in any of these women.
CONCLUSIONS:
No direct relationship between low serum ferritin and hair loss can be established. The usefulness of serum ferritin in the routine investigation of women with chronic diffuse telogen hair loss is unclear, as is the role of iron supplementation therapy in the management of hair loss.
