Smelly Scalp (Hair & Scalp Odor Problem)

I have had this problem for 3 years now, i had to quit my job because of the smell.
In the morning i wash my with nizoral 2% and by the time i have finished it has already started to smell, again.

I wash my hair with cold water, if i use warm water the smell is even worse.
I have also noticed that the odor varies from winter and summer.
If i use normal shampoos and especially conditioners the smell is sickening.

i been told the oil glands are working overtime hence the smell, that stress has caused the condition in the first place, that the hair is dry and requires moisture.

As result I have tried the following and all been unsuccessful apple cider vinger, tea oil shampoo, T Gel shampoo, tar based shampoos, and lemon juice,SL3 Sulfur soap,Keto Plus which also made it worse. Nizoral helps a slightly, but there is still a smell. I have take zinc tablets as suggested by a scalp specialist, then to a second specialist for a second opinion who suggested his own shampoo, still nothing.

Last year I shaved my head,to work out if its the hair or the scalp. I know now its the scalp and no the hair. Now I am continually shaving my head it has help

Recent i was told to try Keto Plus and Ketoconazole tablets,as the doctor said it sound like
a yeast infection,i have been on this for 2 weeks now, there has been a slight improvement. I am waiting to see.

I am hoping, praying, and still searching the Internet.

I can across your website, with suggestion of tersaseptic, which will be my next option.

IF ANYONE HAS BEEN CURED PLEASE SHARE.

Thank you.

Angelique,
There are lots of us on this forum who have found that Jason Dandruff shampoo does take care of the problem. You buy this shampoo in health food stores, sometimes GNC stores have the product. Or you can order it from Vitacost.com, Amazon.com, etc. I have not had a problem since last Jan. when I started using the shampoo. It has been nearly 1-1/2 years. I used the Jason Dandruff shampoo exclusively for about 2 or 3 months, and now use it once a week. In between I use Aubrey Organics shampoos. I never use any shampoos with the ingredients sodium lauryl, laureth sulfates (SLS, SLES). They are very harsh surfactants and they seemed to keep my scalp in a constant state of irritation, making it impossible to heal. I believe the problem to be a combination of fungal and bacterial infections. Good luck to you and I hope you can get your hands on the Jason Dandruff Shampoo. Although it can be a bit of a challenge to find the stuff for some of us it is worth the effort. Please keep us posted.

Hello Besty,

I finally got Jason shampoo.

How long does it take to start to work?
Is this problem due the scalp being dry or oil ?

Angelique,
Glad you got the Jason Dandruff! I am not sure if the problem is due to oil or dryness, but it could be either, no matter, the shampoo will take care of either. Doesn't dry scalp lead to excess oil sometimes?

Anyway, wash with the Jason and leave it in the hair for about 3 min. Rinse and condition. I try to leave the conditioner off of my scalp. I used the Jason Dandruff for about 2 or 3 months exclusively, then used Jason Jojoba, or Aubrey Organics shampoos after that, and I still use Jason Dandruff once a week. After you use the Jason exclusively, you will want to gradually phase into the other formulas. If this is due to Psoriasis, etc. these are something we have to work with long term. This is why I still use the Jason Dandruff on a regular weekly basis.

I am really anxious to hear how this works for you. Please keep updating! Good luck! :-)

Please try WHITE VINEGAR for scalp odor. It works well as an antifungal

Smelly Scalp

I have been smell free for a few days now, and I'm convinced that for me, it was the synthetic birth control I was on that caused my condition (NuvaRing). The smell definitely came from the oil on my scalp. We all seem have have oily skin. I think as we grow older, we have less oil, and since we are so used to stripping oil when we were younger, that we are not used to hydrating our skin as we get older.

I noticed that Nizoral made my hair very dry. All my shampoo products were very drying because I had an oily scalp prior to using the NuvaRing. When I used Jason shampoo, it hydrated my hair, but the smell of the sulfur and the shampoo itself bothered me. When my problem started, it was hormonal, but stress induced the real problem. I also added swimming pools into the horrible fray of things. Chlorine is also very drying.

There was also my diet. Our bodies smell the way we eat. I was so upset and stressed that I barely ate. Some of the smells were from ketoacidosis, a sweetly sickly scent, and the birth control hormones definitely affect metabolism. You might want to examine your diet and see if you are eating properly, or perhaps you might have a food allergy or intolerance which might be causing the smell.

Some of the stuff was actually imagined. I stressed out so much that I made the smells seem worse than it was. Every little smell was manified out of proportion. My boyfriend said there was no smell. In the end, I asked a few acquaintances if I smelled, and all said NO.

So, I think for you, you have already treated the yeast. Have you tried using unscented products to see if you are having conflicts with the fragrances in the shampoos? Most shampoos are like wearing perfume, heavy with fragrance. You are careful with the perfumes that you choose to wear, so you should also be careful with the shampoos you use since the smells are so heavy.

I'm also wondering about our water. If your city has heavy chlorination and fluorination, you might be reacting to the metals in the water. I took out my 14k gold hoop earrings so that I wouldn't have contact with metals constantly.

To be honest, I'm not sure what worked for me since I removed so many things from my environment--synthetic birth control hormones, metal from my ear, fragrance, etc., but I will tell you this, some of it was definitely imagined. I was so paranoid about it that I imagined all sorts of smells coming from my body. I think lowering stress is the key, but this event is extremely stressful. I finally said to myself, I will live my life the way I want, even if people think I stink. By then, I said to myself, if people want to call me the stinky or smelly person, so be it. Then my stress level went down, and then the smell began to go away, too.

So try removing some things from your environment. Stay away from heavily scented soaps and shampoos. Everyone reacts to things in their environment differently, so what works for one person might not work for another. Lastly, I remember one dermatologist prescribed Drysol, which is like a prescription antiperspirant that you can use on your scalp. I did not want to try it, but maybe that could be your solution.
