Hi all, I wanted to post about this medication, because it has really helped me and I know how bad hair loss can make you feel, so if there is a possibility it could help anyone else, I wanted to let you know about my experience.
My hair loss started two years ago now, three months into taking BCP for the first time (Yasmin), when I was 25, after a year of hair loss, I stopped taking Yasmin, but my hair loss continued, I went to every doctor possible and tried a thousand things for hair loss, I have been told I have cysts on my ovaries, PCOS, I don’t have any other symptoms only the hair loss, in a recent blood test one of my hormones tested a bit too high, all the other tests I’d had before, had come back okay. My gynaecologist recommended Diana and Androcur, but I refused to take BCP again. Anyway I have been using Androcur only for three months now and for the fist time in two years, I am starting to feel normal again, my hair loss is down to 20 a day and my hair is a lot stronger than it used to be.
I am not sure it is available in the USA, but it is in Europe and maybe it’s not a miracle cure for everyone, but in my case and for the moment it is really helping

I have heard of Androcour. Is it the same ingred in Diane35? I am on Yasmin. I ordered some Diane35 but was reluctant but now if the yasmin does not work i'll go with the diane, can you tell me more about androcour and whatkind of hair loss do you have?

Diane contains 2mg of Androcur (Cyproterone). Only taking Diane will probably not do anything for your hair if Yasmin didn't. The 2mg of Cyproterone is not enough to make a difference in hair loss if it is androgen dependent. Typically a minimum initial dose of 25mg is required. However, you can always try, every women is different.

After about 1 month I tuned down to the minimum effective dose since Cyproterone has an accumulation factor of about 3 in the body. Androcur is a very powerful antiandrogen, about twice as strong as Spiro, which is why it is typically taken in half doses compared to Spiro. As for the side effects, because it is such an efficient antiandrogen, all the typical side effects of testosterone deprevation apply. Hi all, I'am on 5 mg androcur daily,and I feel good. I think the dose depends on whether you have high androgens - then you would need the large doses like 25 mg or so. If you are just sensible to androgens with normal or lower androgens, then a smaller dose might be enough. My doctor started me on 2,5 mg three times a week which made me bleed on the days without, the we upped to 2,5 mg daily, then to my actual 5 mg - normal hairloss and quite a bit of regrowth and less oil on my skin and scalp, as a side effect my eyes are dry. I also use estrogen and minoxidil.

Hi Shane. Androcur (aka cyproterone acetate) is available in Canada. Dr F tells me that he sends some of his patients up here to get their scripts filled. I suspect if you were to get a prescription, you could try to get it filled by an online Canadian pharmacy. Although I don't know if there would be trouble at the border?
Dr F feels it is slightly superior to Spiro, however I haven't seen any articles or studies showing it to be that much more effective.

Hi there. I would think any doctor CAN prescribe it, but you'd want someone like an endo (who is familiar with the drug) I think.
Androcur acts to reduce the amount of T produced by the body, and also protects the androgen receptors from T/DHT. Similar to what Spiro does, but the 'how' is a little different.
What finasteride (Proscar/Propecia) does is to suppress the activity of 5 alpha reductase, the enzyme that converts T to DHT. It has been shown to have mildly increasing effects on T and E at the same time.
Having said all that, its my opinion that finasteride would cause less systemic side-effects in women than Spiro or CPA. I am currently on Spiro and will be starting the finasteride in the next week or so. I'll be sure to report on my progress as I know there isn't much info out there on women and finasteride.
Androgens are the non-female hormones, so they could check DHEA, DHEA-S, T, Free T, Androstenedione, Androstenediol, DHT etc.

Hi Natalie....I read your post and I'm in the same predicament. I have PCOS with no other physical signs of the syndrome besides the cysts on my ovaries. My hair shed is up the the hundreds and I have (so far) sworn off of BCPs. How did you obtain Androcur? Doctor prescribed it to you while in Europe? I am very interested. I am losing too much hair...The hair loss is causing me to lose my head. Help!

I've been losing for the same amout of time as you. Can i just ask about the pattern of hair loss and has your hair actually also thinned. Also how long have you been taking CA, how much are you taking and when did you start seeing the effects. Was your shedding really high before going onto CA? Also which one of your hormones tested high ? Was it testosterone and did you know your level before going onto CA? sorry about all the questions its just helpful to hear other peoples experiences. I was also told to take diane but just thought id be better off sticking to CA. I took a quarter of a 50mg tablet for 10 days of my first month with aim of increasing in the second. I have no diagnosis of PCOS and as most has been diagnosed with CTE, AGA, bla bla bla

Hello, I hope I answer all your questions, if not, ask again, I really don’t mind answering. The hormone that tested high for me, was….(sorry in Spanish, as I live over here, although I am English) Delta 4 Andro Basal. I am taking 2 pills on the first 10 days of my period, 50 mg each one. My hair loss was all over my scalp, even on the nape on my neck; I was losing say……70-100 hairs a day and almost immediately noticed the difference once taking Androcur, maybe one month later. I now lose 10-20 hairs a day, bad days 30. To me my hair has thinned a lot over these two years, but nobody else seems to notice, I really think that is because nobody really looks as close as we tend to think. My gynaecologist gave me the prescription. Also I wanted to comment that I have been taking antidepressants for 6 months now, because my hair loss took me to the point where I had to take them, either that or stay a home all day and cry, I have not seen any affect with the antidepressants and hair loss at all.

I found you online while researching on hair loss. I'm a 24 year old female and my DHEAS level is (419) mildly elevated.
