Are you on bcp they can mess up iron results. You need to see a derm and be on meds-spiro, etc. Toppix is great to use as a cover up if it is noticeable. How much hair do you lose, do you wash every day, is it long or short, do you take any meds. These ?s will give us a better way to answer your ? |

»No I am not on any birth control pills. I havent been on the pill in almost 3 years. I have been to several dermatologists. Some cant see anything wrong, others say that it is probably just natural thinning (which i dont believe because it doesnt run in my family and my body hair is affected as well). I would say I lose more than 100 hairs a day. Some are normal dark hairs, while others are very fine and thin with no color. They are of all different lengths. I do not wash my hair everyday - only about 2 times a week, and i have cut my hair above my shoulders because it is so thin. it used to be very long. i am not taking any medications - only vitamins and iron. thank you for your help! |

more than 100 hairs a day will start to effect your hair to maybe it will be noticeable to them. I started going to derms who could not tell then eventually they could, after about 4 years. It is best to start a treatment plan before you get to this point. How do you lose these hairs?-in the morning when brushing or gradual throughout the day-do you lose more on the days you wash? You notice the thinning and that is what matters-can others who are close to you notice your hair is different than it was in the past-the derm cannot compare like this. Have you had your thyroid tested? |

»I have had everything tested about 20 times. everything comes back normal except my ferritin is 34. i find it hard to believe that it is female pattern baldness because I am losing my body hair as well. i dont know if this could be TE because it has been going on for almost 3 years. people i know can tell that it is thinner. could low ferritin really be the cause of this hair loss? i just dont understand how my iron can be normal, but my ferritin be low |

If you look back at others posts, many of us had normal blood tests-but we started spiro. How do you lose your hair-in the mornong when it is dry, when you wash, during the day? Do you find you lose less the day after washing? My ferritin is normal-=101 but my iron is very high. I am going to a hemotologist about this in 2 weeks i will ask your ? tina |

It's hard to tell how i lose my hair. It just seems to be at random times. Sometimes when I shower I only lose about 20 hairs, but then there are times when i shower that i lose 100 hairs. i can sometimes run my fingers through my hair and lose nothing, but at other times i can run my fingers through and come out with 5-10 hairs. i really appreciate you asking my question to your doctor. that is really nice of you. thank you so much for all of your help. my doctors just dont seem to care and i feel so helpless... |

Ferritin is storage form of iron. The excess iron is stored as ferritin in the body. Iron requirement per day is 1 mg /day. Since only 10% of iron is absorbed 10 mg /day is needed for the iron that is lost due to various reasons. Women need more because of menstruation. --- |

»Wow this information is very interesting. Thank you for replying. So indeed the cause of my hair loss could be because my ferritin is too low? Can low ferritin cause body hair loss as well? Is 34 really too low for ferritin? Thank you so much for your help. You've given me some hope! |

Where did you read or hear that BCP affects ferritin results? I have no idea how this could be possible, and would be very surprised if there was in fact a connection between BCP and ferritin. To me, one has nothing to do with the other. |

Ferritin is an acute phase reactant.Any inflammatory condition can affect its levels. Its level is also affected by so many different factors including BCP also. --- |

I'm a veteran hair loser... ferritin, thyroid, typhoid... in my opinion, you must get your ferritin levels up in order to truly determine your hair loss. I was convinced that mine was falling from low ferritin, until I got my ferritin up to 65 and it still continued to fall...Then I knew it was something else. In my case, it was also my thyroid... so now I'm getting my meds changed. It's taken me years to figure this out. You need to know that thyroid tests are not absolutes... the TSH test doens't always show low thyroid... you need other tests to totally rule out thyroid problems. In any case, you need to keep on the iron supplements untill your ferrtin levels are high, at least 70. Ferritin is the iron storage in your blood. Your hemoglobin may show normal, but if your ferritin is low, it means your storage is low, bad news for a woman... It's kind of like your fridge and pantry. Your hemoglobin is your fridge... the food that is in there is for today, tomomrrow, etc. but if your pantry, (your food for future use) is low, it means there isn't much to go on when your whole family drops in for a big meal, in other words, the fridge will get empty pretty quickly. So work on the iron and see what happens. In my experience, dermos are useless and just usually say it's hereditary... |

It's so frustrating isn't it? I have hair breakage and loss. The hemotologist said it was because of my anemia and 70 was too low for my ferritin, it needed to be closer to 100. For about 20 years I took iron supplements, now I just go for intraveneous iron treatments (venofer). I see an improvement within days. Also, you might want to have your Vitamin D levels checked. There's a history of skin cancer in my family and I wear sunscreen all the time/stay in the shade, so i'm not getting any from the sun. I've noticed a considerable improvement with the vitamin D. The shedding stopped within 2 weeks of taking the vitamin D, I'm hoping regrowth starts soon. Best of luck. |

Wow, too low? Most dermos say between 60-80.... can you tell us more about what you're doing... I didn't know that vitamin D had much to do with hair growth. My hair falls more in the summer but I think it's related to yeast overgrowth in the gut. What else are you doing? Which iron do you use? |

I had my iron checked, and she said my iron was normal, but my ferritin was at 34. She said that is low, and she put me on iron pills. Everything else Ive had checked is normal, including tons of hormone bloodwork, etc... Can low ferritin really be a cause of hair loss or do I just have to come to grips that I am going bald? I've tried to be patient, but this is going on 3 years. I am so upset. Also, how can my ferritin be low but my regular iron be normal? I am so confused. I am only 28 years old. If anyone could offer some help, I would be very grateful. Thank you so much for your time. Have a great day.
