Any recommendations on how to go off yasmin? (Yasmin) |
I am worried about the terrible shed that I have read will occur within 2-5 months of stopping, and worried that acne will return. I have been on yasmin about 2 years now and want to stop. Does anyone have suggestions how to go off it, and if there is something to take before or now during the transition, to ease the withdrawal symptoms? Would biotin help? Does the hair ever grow back to the way it was before, even if its long term?

Dear Sami,
I too was on Yasmin for 2 years. I took my last pill on Dec. 2, 2006. I choose to stop Yasmin because it was causing my hair loss. (I think, I am still awaiting my final test results, but my thyroid is normal)My shed has been probably 100 hairs a day since stopping. A few days its been more like 150. I am taking a multivitamin with 3000 mcg of Biotin. Strangely enough I think its helping. On days I forget to take it, I seem to lose more the next day. Before I started taking it the texture was really terrible too and that also seems to improving. I'll probably peak in the next few weeks. I am dreading it. I am washing with Nioxin but haven't noticed any change yet. I woould like to tell you I had been on 3 other pills, had 2 children, and stopped taking bcpills to conceive these children. I never had hair loss! After I stopped Yasmin I had terrible cramps and bloating for about a week or so. I am actually much hungrier and have put on a few pounds. My skin looks beautiful. My first period was really messed up (see other post) and expect my second one next week. I hope you do not experience any of these yucky side effects if you decide to stop Yasmin. There's really no way to tell for sure. Finish your pack so at least you're not in mid cycle. I would also advise to think sbout not stopping if you have something important coming up like a wedding- because you don't know how much/if any hair you will lose. Good luck and keep posting!

Have you figured out the reason for your period to be messed up? You are the first person that I have come across to get the brown gross period like me. I have never got any answers from doctors. All I know is I was normal before bcps now my skin is oilier, my hair is falling out, i break out more than when I was a teenager, and my periods are different and gross. Any ideas? THANKS!

Dear Rachel,
I have no clue about the period. My entire life (I'm 31) my periods were normal. The only time I came close to this before was after giving birth I bleed for 6 weeks (both pregnanies.) Even so, it was never this brown in color. I have not seen a doctor since it was only one cycle so far. I am hoping that is just old dead blood. My periods while on Yasmin changed last summer, they got shorter and much lighter. I think the Yasmin was stopping my period before it was "done." What was coming out now after stopping Yasmin was months of leftovers. That is my opinion if it continues to happen I will see a doctor. I hope everything improves for you - are you still on the pill?

Tandjsmom,
Thanks for responing. I went off of bcps in June of 2003. I've been having problems since then. For the first year to a year and a half my periods were lasting 10-14 days long. Then all last year they start off brown then it gets heavy but when it's heavy it doesn't even look like blood it's like bright pink then it will turn brown again. This started when I was 27 and I'm now 30. Because I'm 30 doctors say that it can't be my hormones and if it was then I wouldn't be getting my periods. I don't know what to do. They are all useless. Good luck. Let me know how things go.

Dear Rachel,
I am just now starting to realize the damage bc pills can do. I feel terrible for you, I know I would freak out if that was happening to me. I would definately seek another, another, and another opinion. Sometimes I post on healthboards - they have a section for women's health - you may want to post there. I have read similar stories there. Good Luck!

Any recommendations on how to go off yasmin? |
Here is my hair loss story; it is long:
I am 27 years old, and about 6 months ago, I was suffering terribly from hair loss. I was on Yasmin for 5 1/2 years, and stopped taking it to get pregnant. 5 months later, my hair started falling out in giant amounts. It fell out all over my head, all day long, wash or not, brush or not, ponytail or not, constantly. I would say I lost 1000 or more hairs a day for 5 weeks. My ponytail was about as thick as a quarter, not a silver dollar anymore - you get the picture. I probably lost 60% of my hair during that time. It was totally devastating. I was at a loss for an explanation.
I went to a dermatologist. I still think it is from Yasmin discontinuation, but he seemed to think it was from having the flu 2 1/2 months before the hair loss started and having a temp of 103 for 2 days. That can definitely kill hair growth temporarily. I think it took a long time for the pills' hormones to get out of my body, and maybe that explains it. Also, I had bloodwork done, and my thyroid was fine (definitely on the side of hypothyroid if anything, not the hair loss-capable hypERthyriod). My hormone levels were fine, and all that.
I know how devastating this is. I went to the dermatologist, a regular internist doctor, and a naturopath. The naturopath gave me some B-12 vitamins, thyroid herbs, a yeast intibitor, and told me to go on a gluten free diet. All I can say is that when I went to the dermatologist, he told me that I should be losing hair for about 2-3 months, lose about 75% of it, my follicles were fine and not damaged, and it will grow back. I think with the help of the naturopath, the herbs, and the gluten-free diet, I only lost 50-60% of my hair for 5 weeks, not 3 months.
I also started taking a very high dose of natural vegetarian Biotin (5mg, I think, like 20x whatever is daily reccomended), and using Jason Naturals brand Biotin hair shampoo and conditioner. It is like only $8 per bottle of each from the health food store, and it made my scalp feel great immediately. I don't know for sure, but I am willing to bet it helped a little - not with the hair loss (the telogen effluvium spontaneous kind that I had), but with the regrowth.
I am happy to say that 6 months later, I now have what I consider a great head of hair. My hair was always thick and plentuful, and for about a month, it looked like I was sick and balding. I was embarrased to go out. It was not that the hair was thin or thinning, but that it was just dissapearing altogether. Not a month after it stopped falling out (which happened spontaneously the same way it started), I had about 10,000 hairs on my head that were about 1/2 inch long. So frizzy and sticking up they were, but the balding effect was gone - thank god.
I am not a vain person, but I have always loved my hair, and I know how devastating this is for women and young women especially. PLEASE believe me. If telogen effluvium is what you have (all of a sudden type of hair loss), especially after an event (birth control discontinuation, sickness, surgery, death, stress, postpartum, flu, injury, etc.), please believe me. I cried every night and day, and even thought I was going to have to get a wig!
It did stop for me after taking some action with natural remedies. I know it would have stopped ANYWAY, but I wanted to quicken that process. I was SO upset by the whole thing, and I know how upset you are. IT WILL STOP and you will have your hair back. PLEASE DON'T STRESS (impossible, I know). No amount of avoiding hair wash, brush, pillows, will do anything to help you, so don't be going around with greasy knotty hair. That is not going to help you at all. It will just make you even more self-concsious.
Best of luck. I wish I could help more, but just know from one female hair-lover to another, it WILL be okay, and your hair will come back. Within 2 months, your scalp will look fine and unnoticable of the whole event, and within 8-9 months, your ponytail will be thick again. IT WILL BE OKAY!

Losing hair when stopped Yasmin |
Thank god that I'm not the only one! I'm so upset I've been crying for 2 weeks. I had very think hair to start and the TE is horrible and I cringe every time I even tough my scalp.
I was on BC pills for 10 years, I'm not 28 and stopped the pill because I wanted to get the hormones out of my system before we start trying to get pregnant. I was on Ortho for years then something else then Yasmin. 3 weeks after I stopped Yasmin my hair has been falling out about 200-500 a day. I've lost count at this rate. I can see my scalp and i can already tell my hair line is different. I have less hair around the back of my head and also around my bang area.
Thryroid is fine as per the bloodwork. Which I honestly already knew. I knew right away that it was from the pill because I've never experienced anythign like this before to this magnitude. I'm so upset.
I'd love to hear if anyone else's stories and if your hair is growing back at all. I just don't know what to do. Pretty soon I'm going to just have to shave it all off.
