FG (Propecia, Finasteride for Women)

» Hey FG, I could have written that paragraph on spiro myself, point for
» point, aside from the weight gain (I didn't retain water or weight. Spiro
» did a number on my metabolism and I lost 6 pounds eating more doing less)!
» I wish I could've kept my increased boobage. But, soon as I stopped, they
» deflated into two pathetic raisins, while I packed on all the weight I'd
» lost...only on my BUTT and HIPS (trust me, I didn't need any there). This
» all just in the matter of 2-3 weeks I've been off.
»
» Spiro pushed my formerly perfect thyroid into hypo, bled out all the
» ferritin I worked 8 months to store to 70, plus all manner of other
» problems. I'm praying my thyroid goes back to normal on its own soon. FG,
» another gal my age, and I are the only ones I can think of who reacted
» this way. My labs came back with out of range high E, guess that's why I
» was bleeding every 2 weeks (high E stimulates uterine lining) and having
» bad headaches at the end.
»
» Still, I was willing to handle the irregular, frequent bleeding, (some of)
» the headaches, the fatigue and moving around in molasses feeling, if it had
» kept working, but it suddenly started working against me. I REALLY miss my
» skin at the height of spiro though, it's back to being a disaster again. I
» must be the only hyperoily, hyperacne 27 year old in the world with
» wrinkles.
»
» I'm not trying to scare anyone, but if you are regular, non-PCOS, with
» normal or low androgens, it's probably best to combine spiro with a BCP,
» which I can't take. If I'd been on both, I may not have had these problems
» (I had perfect cycles, so spiro messed that up big time, meaning it not
» only messed up my individual normal hormone levels, but the hormone values
» in relation to one another as well. The girls who respond well to and are
» regularized by spiro typically tend to have messed up cycles to begin
» with).
»
» So, FG are you still on 1mg Propecia and only Propecia? Any effect? And
» any messed up cycles? (PLEASE NO. I'm thinking Avodart soon.)

Hi eb...No freakin' way! I can't believe your sides were as bad as mine if not worse! (My hypothyroidism existed prior to the Spiro.) I'm sure your hormones will shift back to normal since I took it in your post that you've ony been off it 2-3 weeks, is that right? But...I read an article on antiandrogen therapy that stated, dismally, (so if some of you posters are the ones that get angry at less-than-positive trial results, stop reading now; I'm just the messenger!) that 60% of participants had side effects on anti-androgen therapy, and only 30% were helped in the case of their alopecia (like 85% were helped in cases of acne.) In terms of your humorously dubbed increased boobage, you'll be happy to note that it is still the case on Propecia (yes, I'm still on) but NO messing up of my menstrual cycles. Finasteride doesn't seem to interfere w/ ovulation/menstruation, but oddly my boobs are still a C cup (formerly B) and I'm still up now 8 pounds!! I also read in an article that anti-androgen therapy interferes w/ metabolism, particularly carbohydrate metabolism, and many men develop gynecomastia (man-boobs) and testicular pain on anti-androgen therapy Spiro and Propecia/Proscar, which translates for us gals as bigger boobies, but again, not everyone experiences this. Like you, I cannot tolerate the pill for the same reasons as Spiro: it made me nauseous, 10 lbs heavier, bigger boobs, and depressed. No estrogen dominance for the FG! As far as the hair report on 1 1/2 yrs of Propecia...hmmm. Who knows if it's slowed down the thinning, although I never had major shedding to begin w/ except for the Rogaine shed and then the Spiro/Propecia shed, both three months after beginning. But, it certainly hasn't plumped up the thickness at all. It's possible I'm not taking enough (I don't take 2.5 mg/day) but my body can barely tolerate what I AM taking, because I must say I'm still brain-foggy and heavier and boobier and much more tired. But, my hypo and impending perimenopause (I'm 43 but levels still mid-range hormonally) I'm thinking are contributing. It's exhausting having to be one's own guinea pig and diagnostic technician and endocrinologist/hair specialist all in one  ! eb, why are you considering the Avodart versus Proscar or Propecia? Aren't you afraid of pushing your body too far to the other side? Have you read the dudes' reports on the Men's Forums re. Avodart? They have worse sides....not to alarm you. Take care...FG ;-) PS: Are you in the medical field?
